Dan Stevens leaving made the show better. Mary became a thoroughly modern woman. Mt Molesly became a well paid screenwriter. They would have stayed stuck in their expectations. If he hadn't left

@@MandieTerrier in my opinion, other events could've brought about those character changes as well if the writer wished to pursue it, my imagination: the earl's illness happening earlier and making Mary more aware of matters, and learning about it alongside Matthew. Or a near life-ending event for Molesly, making him think deeper about what he's doing with his life... since Matthew being alive was what was meant to happen, I do wonder about the original plan for everyone...

He saved Downton. He married & rescued Mary from herself, he rescued Sybil & Rose several times, he supported the girls in new “radical” endeavors (Edith writing letters to the paper), he gave a fortune to Robert who had completely destroyed Cora’s fortune, and finally giving Mary and Downton an heir.

Oh I had to laugh when I heard Maggie Smith's character ask that. It did not - of course - ever occur to me until that moment the class divide. Their Niveau did not have to concern themselves with those issues. That was all taken care of by service downstairs. And those in service back then got up early and went to bed late. I can't even fathom how they did not eat their supper downstairs until after the upstairs was served and passified. So we are talking anywhere from 8:30 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. Try to sleep with a full stomach. And Patmore THEN had to clean up the kitchen thereafter. No wonder most of them were single or left the industry when they got married (especially the women). But...the great divide of money / class.

The first three minutes strike such a cord being Mary and Matthew's first and last scenes together 😢 While I have love for a lot of the other characters of DA, it was the Mary and Matthew love ❤ story that had me grip from their first frosty meeting! It keep me enthralled for the first three series/seasons and once he was gone I just didn't have the heart 💔 to continue watching it without Matthew (and the same would have been if Mary had died instead). I did eventually watch the rest of the series some time later but it just didnt have the same magic for me so I won't likely revisit it again like I continually do with series/seasons 1-3. As for the man himself, Mr Dan Stevens, again I respect his right to do what he wants with his own career but there will always be a part of me that won't forgive him for leaving the series with them having to kill of his character as I wanted to see their love story continue to the end of the series and in the eventual films. But I'd like to think that Mr Stevens feels somewhat of a compliment from the many who are upset or annoyed for him leaving the show because it is a huge testament to his talents as a actor and what he brought to the role of Matthew Crawley.

After Matthew died, Nary should have been with Charles Blake. He was the only man she was around that made her a better person. They were also great friends. Henry Talbot was just Mehmet. Tony Gillingham was earnest but too staid and respectable. Charles Blake was spicy, fun and serious too.

Thinking on it, Matthew didn’t really have the right to withdraw his proposal after Cora miscarried. Mary hadn’t done anything (newly) dishonorable or scandalous. If she had pressed the issue I think Matthew would have been duty bound to marry her. Of course Mary was very proud so catching a man that way was probably too low for her

Ugh part of me wishes they dealt with Dan Stevens leaving the show by being very transparently like "Matthew and Mary's baby as asthma or whatever so they’re going to move to Italy or the seaside or the South of France for a few years, off they go" so we could just imagine them happy and offscreen and all alive in the narrative. Of course Michelle Dockery was still great in the show I’m glad we got to keep seeing her, but ughhhhhghhhhhhh
