In an astonishing masterclass, Italian guitar phenomenon Matteo Mancuso shows us the secrets to his guitar style - which has been described by Al Di Meola as "light years ahead". In this video Matteo reveals how he uses fingerstyle to play some of the most agile, articulate solos imaginable, how economy of movement aids his speed and accuracy and why listening is the key to being a richly expressive player. With beautiful performances throughout, you need to see this if you are interested in the state of the art of electric guitar playing today.

Once you get used to his amazing style and technical ability, you can focus on how fantastic his phrasing is. He's the real deal, no doubt about it.

Yes, there is a natural dynamic involved with his technique, using finger picking to accentuate some notes while legato seems to account for some passing notes. But really, he is playing with dynamics so intuitively, watching his left hand all the time so his right hand technique follows his phrasing. Really impressive.

@@peace7482 That's a heck of a claim to make, to which I would say his playing speaks for itself. Guthrie Govan uses fret wraps, as do many other guitarists. I've never used one so I don't really have an informed opinion on them, but I'd hardly think it was an unfair advantage, anymore than overdrive, noise gates, etc, are.

Just to let you know, ego is not a negative thing. Ego is the central reference point of consciousness, the logical rational ID of the self's inner voice. The negative bragging and macho we see exhibited by, say, Mussolini and Donald Trump, is not ego at all. In that case it is unrestrained dishonesty. The ego is responsible for restraint. The lack of restraint is not evidence of a strong ego, but is, instead, a lack of the proper application of one's own ego to restrain one's Shadow.

Matteo is the gift that keeps on giving. He illustrates what he does, confident that although he's giving up the 'secrets' we lesser mortals have simply no chance of getting anywhere close to what he does. His skill with his fingers on the strings has been done for years. Andres Segovia, Manitas De Plata and many others clearly show what can be achieved. Alan Houldsworth's legato melodic skills were off the charts. Plus all of the hundreds of other top guitarists with each of their own unique skills have manifested themselves in Matteo. He is every guitarist. Matteo's improvised lines are something to not only admire and savour, but further still be amazed over that someone so young has achieved. I have his first album. It is superb. I want Drift Lab to produce CDs. (I'm old school.) I'm at the later end of life's journey as a keyboard player. I'm just so happy that Matteo has arrived from the Celestial Spaceship in time for me to enjoy before I make my return.

With great talent comes also a kind of great humility. Matteo is a brilliant young star in the jazz guitar universe! He lets his playing speak for itself.

Great point about strengthening your pinky on your chording hand. Too many self-taught guitar players never take the time to utilize and strengthen the pinky.

I'm getting old and have to get used to people using new techniques and playing new stuff but I really admire this young man talking so friendly and full of love for music and then sounding so calm while he's playing something that I won't even touch in this live if I wanted to. And I'm glad he didin't grow up in the 80's where your hair decided if you were going the next big thing. I wish you all the best Matteo, just make sure whatever you do, just add to what makes your heart warm and not your brain.

I’ve always played with fingers only and for most of that time accepted what I thought were the limitations of the technique because of the other things you can achieve with it. When I saw Matteo play Hot Wired I realised those limitations didn’t actually exist. I spent hundreds of hours and over a year completely reinventing my picking technique as a result and it has transformed my playing. Very inspiring player.

Really enjoy his chord playing, really clean and can move positions and inversions almost effortlessly. The fast appregios are the same but sometimes gets in the way of more melodic stuff at least in this interview. Like so many others I will be following his future efforts. Fantastic player.

Please check out his other videos (including his latest album drops) and you'll find that his arpeggios are quite varied and musical. Matteo has moments where he plays flashy, but it's for the benefit of the music.

I liked that he mentioned listening to the kinds of lines that come from other instruments, and to build your vocabulary and musical sense independently of your guitar playing. This is key to breaking out of ruts that we so easily fall into. Even when we think we’re being creative, we’re still stuck with the limitations of our instruments and our imaginations. Really listening, even to music we don’t like very much, can often reveal something we didn’t hear before.

Amazing combination of classical guitar and other techniques applied to electric guitar. This has been in development as it were gradually over many years as proliferation of electric guitars and amps has finally enabled open minded players to go beyond previous imaginary barriers. Obviously a LOT of work and talent involved too! Good musical taste helps too.
