Mattel HyperScan - Seventh VideoGame Generation Recap - Adam Koralik
Ойындар
It's Adam Koralik here and today we're discussing the Mattel HyperScan! Yes, really...why did you guys make me do this? This is a retro-active episode of my 7th generation recap videogame console series. I didn't originally own this console, but I do now...unfortunately.
I'm considering this part 2.5 as it wedges between episodes 2 and 3, whatever, anyway, enjoy!

I remember seeing ads for this thing and being speechless over how awful it looked. The advertisements didn’t even try to hide the fact that it was garbage. I wasn’t even aware that the games were recognized by the ESRB. I always lumped this thing in with Leapfrog TV toys and never with actual consoles.

Even leapfrog and v-tech devices have more powerful hardware and better games than the hyperscam.
I remember actually wanting this as a kid. So glad I got a xbox 360 instead xP
I got into Hyperscan purely for the X-men cards. Didn’t even care to play the game. However, I got into it at the perfect time. Everything was discounted cheap and plentiful. I was running around to every Walmart and TRU buying booster packs for 1-3 bucks a piece and game packs for 3-5 bucks. Originally, boosters were 10 and games were 20.
All I remember about it is that my Uncle got it for my cousins who were like 6 at the time, they were a bit too young for a real console, but he didn't want them to play his brand new ps3. It didn't last too long... I think they got rid of it in like 2 or 3 months. The controller was unbelievable, honestly the V-Tech has a better controller.
I actually played with amiibo as a kid without owning a wii U (I do now and really like it) but me and my sister had many adventures, we even replayed thousand year door with certain amiibo and McDonald's toys. Good times, Good times, and I'm a teenager now.

This kind of reminds me of these robots my brother and I found at Goodwill a while ago. They scanned cards to fight, seems like it would work, but was in practice was terrible. Not sure but it was around the same time. I wonder if Mattel made them.
I remember watching a Classic Game Room video on this console years ago and being surprised that people thought this was a good idea to release this console, but I guess you are right that trading cards were big at the time and companies wanted to try and make some money off the card craze.
Always fascinated to hear the history of consoles, even the obscure failed ones, great review!
The thing with this console was that it wasn't made with a "Video game console platform" mindset. It was made - and marketed like a toy. I think in a sense it was meant to be more like the Atari Flashback, or those Plug and Play systems that were popular at the time. Problem being it pulled an Icarus. "Shelfwarmer" is a term used when a specific toy out of a series just stays on shelves for a long time. The problem with single game plug and and plays, is that one of the games will inevitably be the shelf warmer. Mattel being a toy maker would almost certainly be aware of this. This is a big problem if your going to make a line of pricey toys. Having a CD drive meant if... 'Interstellar Wrestling League' became a shelf warmer, at least they would be small boxes, and relatively cheap being just a CD, rather then a big expensive box. However, being $70 puts you well outside of the plug and play price range. While having a CD drive subjects you to being compared to videogame consoles, with a pricepoint that was too comparable to a Gamecube ($99). The Gamecube also generally did come with a game, there were "Players Choice" games that cost $20, and of course you could goto Gamestop, or go on Ebay for used games. As I said, it pulled an Icarus. It flew too high for the 'plug and play' market where it belonged, and got too close to the game console market where any merits it might have had melted. So it crashed.
A hypothetical 1994 Hyperscan is honestly terrifying. I feel like it the card thing would work so much better but it would be atleast a 399$ console considering the ps1s price. But Mattell being behind it would have helped significantly.
As someone who was a very young kid in 2006, I can confidently say that I did not have a Hyperscan... ...I got a V-Smile that year...
I kinda feel the idea of the hyperscan could have worked at the time as an accessory for the main consoles like the card reader was an usb connected device which was compatible with games with the accessory in mind. Also the games could have looked like they were made in 2006-2007 instead of the early 90s obviously.
Thanks Adam this weird piece of kit always fascinated me ha. Merry Christmas!

Intellivision was the first console I ever had. It's probably been over twenty years since I last played it but it was working just fine when I did.
i love these recap series, i can't sleep without your sweet lullaby voice
Funny how every time I see this system, I think of AVGN's review of it. And honestly, it doesn't even look like a console that would come out in the 7th Gen.
Yoooooo i actually remember that commercial for this console lol. Brings back memories!
Great review and great shirt, merry Christmas everyone.
Back at it again with the deep, deep cuts.
It the best CD Rom console with all games requiring cards to be scanned. Ohhh wait it is the only one.
Something a lot of people don't get about Toys-to-life: If you make it so that people can play the game without buying any of the additional components...that's exactly what's going to happen. You can't make the toys optional or else people will opt-out pretty much every time. You have to either be all-in or not at all unless you're selling character-themed collectibles the way Nintendo does. It's the harsh reality of Toys to life.
My mom got one for my brother and when I started collecting systems I was like oh yeah we have that but of course she had donated it, so I got one for like $18 but with no game and now I can't get any games for it since people want more than I spent on the system and it'd ruin the great price I paid, I've never actually played the system but I kinda like the controller and the folding aspect, at least just the analog stick, great video!
I think they were aspired from Nintendo E-Reader
Another great video I'd love to see a retrospective of the virtual boy
There used to be a small chain of stores in my area called Building 19. They sold mostly overstock, closeouts, and factory flawed stuff. That was the only place I've seen anything for Hyperscan in the wild. They only had the controllers. Nothing else. No games. No cards. Not even the base unit.
Love this series!
Still a huge step up from the barcode battler.

You can have a vintage museum with your collection now, I’d pay to tour 😄
12:00 I don't know what you are complaining about? I booted my Hyperscan up just last week. .... And I loaded a game yesterday. So what is the big whoop? You got other stuff to do? This is a console for people with not a lot going on. It practically is in the motto. They did indeed take 2 things, combine them (and their required times), but you have it all in 1 place! Thank you Mattel, I did not want to have to go to 2 different sides of the room for 2 things!
I place this one in my 'toy console' category of gaming. Oddly enough I was planning on adding a toy console display in my gameroom in 2021, including the HyperScan. They'll just be for show (not connected) but I thought it might be fun to have them all together. I also plan to add the Action Max, Interactive Vision, Game Wave, and Xavix.
Gotta love that blast from the past Maddox shirt.

Thank you for going through the trouble of putting together a team of products to show us the Hyperscan in its most beautiful form. Lol.
I never bought one but remember seeing it , but my cousin got it for Christmas for the Ben10 game since he loved Ben10 at the time. I remember going over and we plugged it in and it was actually defective out of the box. They went and exchanged it the next day and supposedly my cousin got impatient with it and threw it across the room and broke the TVs av port. They returned it bought my cousin got a wii and Ben10 game.
I genuinely feel bad for a kid who had this while all of their friends had Playstation 2/3, Xbox/Xbox 360, Gamecubes, Wilson, etc. Like I can't imagine what they felt when they played this and then went to their friends' houses and playing Halo or Metal Gear and realizing what they had was shit.
Lunch break and generation recap. 😊
Adam wanted all the smoke with this thing. Ha😆
4:30 That's because around that time, young Adam was visited by himself from the future and was shown the beauty of Shenmue.
AVGN did a review of this omg I had to watch this!
Great Review. Can't wait for you to find someone to RGB mod it!
I geuss we could thank this thing for being the predecesor of Skylanders, Lego Dimensions and Amiibo?
Didn’t know this pos existed until AVGN reviewed it LOL. I have a fuzzy memory of my 11 year old self seeing one at a Walmart in late 2006 but idk may have been something else. I can’t believe this thing tried to compete with PS3, 360, & Wi… what a joke. Awesome vid as always Adam.
I think this looks more like a toy than it does a game console.
Love the shirt man
I feel like the Hyperscan was a toy that the buyer at Mattel saw at a toy fair and just bought it sight unseen. This can't be something that was designed in house. But they did make the Power Glove. So maybe they took a chance on it and failed spectacularly. I'm glad that you didn't just trash it for the memes. Giving something a fair shake and putting yourself in the shoes of the time really helps give it a proper perspective.
Can't wait for the video where you get it rgb modded!
I have one of these abominations like new-defective in the box. Disc was hitting the cover when trying to spin. So got board and took the assturd apart to find the rubber stabilizers for the laser were not level. I ended up using part of an ear-swab to jam between the laser mount and top half of system to get it level. Sativa is amazing for bringing out my creative abilities. Now just gotta figure out that burning wax smell. XD
That vintage Maddox shirt, though
The Mattel HyperScan was never meant to compete with those scrubs the PlayStation, XBox, or Nintendo. It was supposed to compete with the master races Apple Pippin, Bandai Playdia, Casio Loopy, and VM Labs Nuon. Merry XMas Series X
Oh boy... I actually had one of those when it launched my grandma bought me one of those Christmas of that year with Ben 10 and the marvel game and i played it once and threw it in closet and got rid of it later luckily I had a GameCube as a kid as well haha
I was big into Yugioh as a kid. Played with a bunch of kids when I was in elementary school and I remember seeing the anime religiously on Cartoon Network.
Came for the HyperScan stayed for the Maddox t-shirt. Well done, sir.
Atleast you can still play it without a internet connection
I think what Mattel should have done was released the Hyper Scan as an accessory for the Wii or PS3 or Xbox 360. The Wii would have been the best bet, given how under powered it was. But in any case, they should have taken the Lego Dimensions approach: sell a scanner that plugs into the Wii or PS3 or what have you as a Starter Pack, then sell games and cards for it. And of course, if you absolutely need a card to play the game, said card should be included with said game.
Even if I tolerate that this thing is not made for to complete with the big consoles I can't imagine how any child can enjoy that. But I'm happy to know one more rare console now, thanks for that!
I was working at Wal-Mart the Christmas this came out and we gave it two whole shelves worth of space and put posters for it all over the store and I know for a fact we didn't sell a single one. Not even the grandparents fell for this thing, that is how lame it was. A few months later we marked the systems down to $10 and the card packs down to ten cents and the games down to five bucks and still only a few people touched the thing. In the end we just moved it all to the storage room in the back, and they were still rotting back there when I left the company four years later.

Nintendo did this concept much better when they released that card reader for the Gameboy Advance. Uses a strip like a credit card to read games and was basically DLC.

RGB ODE.
Wow I could've sworn you already talked about this
This makes my beloved PC-FX look like the Dreamcast.
I was 12 in 2006, asked for this console for Christmas. I knew it wasn't really any competition for the Big Three, but my request was one out of morbid curiosity more than anything. The card-scanning function barely worked, the X-Men game took an eternity to load, the controller was uncomfortable. I'd say just about the only good thing about it was the art on those X-Men cards. I think I legitimately tried playing it twice before the system was packed away. Still have it somewhere. Thankfully it didn't ruin Christmas; I had more important things to worry about and got better gifts (including sole ownership of the OG Xbox after my older brother got a 360). The lesson here is that sometimes it's best not to act on your curiosity. And no, I am not a serial killer.
"...and now we go back to loading" XD
The Hyperscan kinda reminds me of the Virtual Boy
Personally it probably more in line with the rumored specs of the Panther console. Just with a CD based media. So a 2D sprite based 32bit console.
18:22 I played the HyperScan once and can confirm, I have left a trail of dead bodies in my wake. (I actually have never laid my hands on it but the comment was funny lol)
