There was something warm and spiritual about our beloved Matt Monro. He exuded such gentleness and sweetness in his conversation as well as his singing! What a voice, what rendition, what control? Among all the singers I listened to, Matt Monro was truly the greatest crooner coming out of England and around the world!

Who remembers Jess Conrad? Now who remembers Matt Monro? Every interview I have seen with Matt , he always came across as a very humble man. When you have real talent, you don’t need to flaunt it. Matt Monro was definitely one of the greatest singers of our time.

Matt Monro was the greatest singer. There will never be anyone like him. If only he was here today.

“The man with the golden voice” was an accurate description.

Matt Monroe came to my fathers house (he knew him as my father was also a singer) in Benoni in September 1971. I happened to have come home to visit my parents, as I had not long left home to work in Johannesburg. Matt came with a lady called Maureen Dunne (who was connecting him with people in South Africa. We played cards until about 2am in the morning. Then Matt and Maureen took me home to my bedsit, a distance of about 30 miles. He told my father afterwards that I was a very nice fellow.
