I agree with Carlton here - he made the most of his ability and will never look back in anger, he achieved more than he could have ever expected. Le Tissier is like the Alan Hudsons, Frank Worthingtons, Duncan McKenzies, Tony Curries, Rodney Marshes, Stan Bowles, etc. etc. never played for big teams, never won anything but never the less entertained us all and we have good memories of them all and no doubt they are all wondering "what if my ship came in and I played for a top 4 team? What would I have achieved and what would my life be like?". Carlton Palmer over-achieved given his God given talents but Le Tissier just enjoyed being a big fish in a small pond and being hero-worshipped on a local rather than a Global scale.

It's funny, you hear pundits consistently complain that players should be more loyal to clubs, that there is no loyalty anymore. Then you hear people constantly asking players like Le Tissier and Shearer being accused of lacking ambition because they were happy playing for the team they support. Come on, they should be applauded. Le Tissier himself has said, he was just a young lad from Guernsey happy to be playing football professionally. You can't knock him being honest about that, he just didn't care about trophies.

00:28 Carlton says that Southampton were eight points adrift when he joined the Saints. That statement is false. Carlton joined Southampton on 23rd September 1997, seven games into the season, bottom with four points, in 19th place was Sheffield Wednesday with five points. Maybe he means eight points away from safety but in 17th place was Barnsley on six points. So if Carlton's misremembering things that much, how much does that make his other comments credible?

If these comments came out of the mouth of anyone but Carlton Palmer i'd take them more seriously. He was woeful as a player and only wore an England shirt because Graham Taylor was the only person in the country that rated him! As for Le Tissier, his fitness was always questioned, for one thing he was bloody lazy by his own admission! MLT has said a number of times that he never wanted to leave Southampton because his life was in Southampton, why should he go to a bigger club when he was happy where he was - i think that's actually commendable in the modern game! Also, while a lot of other players were getting huge boot sponsorship deals Le Tissier was wearing Quasar boots - but then he could do what he does (when the mood takes him) in flip flops!

He might not be the greatest footballer ever but Carlton Palmer tells it like it is. He should have gone to a big club, he didn't, he was a fucking lazy footballer although his talent was never in doubt (Le Tissier I mean). I think this is the classic clash between the less gifted but hard working footballer against the clearly gifted, lazy as fuck footballer. I'm reading a lot of comments along the lines of 'if Le Tissier was French, they'd have built their team around him and he'd have won 50 caps.' No, that wouldn't have happened. Players like Zidane, Xavi, Iniesta, Pirlo weren't just gifted players. They were also expected to work hard - and did. I don't remember seeing Zidane stroll around the field. He was a match winner but also worked very hard for his teams. Do you really think Ferguson would have said to Le Tissier: do what you like, you don't have to bother about tackling or defending? I don't think so somehow. Le Tissier knew this I think and knew a lot more would have been expected of him at a club like ManUtd. So he was never interested in leaving Southampton and no big club was ever going to sign him. Yes, I know he scored a lot of amazing goals. I believe he would have been best suited as a substitute - not a first choice - for England. If they were losing and badly needed a goal, bring Le Tissier on and tell him to have some shots at goal. With his shooting ability he could have won games for England. Incidentally, Hoddle gave him his, I think, 8 caps. But even Hoddle didn't really want him in the England team and so only occasionally picked him.

Don't knock people for not having much ambition, whether or not it's actually true (there are always a myriad of other reasons). If everybody in the world was max ambition there'd already be no world. Some people treat their passage through this world as a learning experience not obtaining experience, and value peace and good times and doing as little harm as possible. Others can be jealous of the light these have inside them. The light that makes them content with what they have so they don't have to always keep looking for more.

Le god was an amazing footballer and Southhampton was right to play to his strengths. maybe he didn't want to go to a bigger club where he perhaps wouldn't get away with not training like everyone else. Bigger clubs did want him but he stayed loyal to Southhampton. And from sticking to his morals and principles especially during and after covid he has gained a huge following for taking a stand and walking away from lucrative contracts as a Sky pundit and speaking his truth. He most certainly gets my respect, he was a fabulous talented footballer, but and even better human being.

In response to some who criticise Le Tissier... and allege that he underachieved You cannot underachieve when scoring goals regularly against top flight teams, dribbling around top flight defenders and beating top flight goalies of international standard. The goals I have seen are well up there with players like Gascoigne and frankly I was more impressed with Le Tissiers efforts. What Gascoigne did achieve is a persistence to do well despite his mental issues. All credit it him for that. The other thing I noticed about Le Tissier is a consistent lack of ego after scoring.. as if to say "well that's what I am paid to do".... despite the goal being of amazing quality and this was defined by commentators and opposing crowds being so entertained they actually clapped and cheered him.

I saw Carlton towards the end of his career when he signed for Coventry, and I have to say, he was magnificent for them, he totally bossed the midfield and transformed them. Ask any Cov fan what they think of Carlton Palmer.

I think Palmer is probably right. Perhaps Le Tissier could have achieved far more for England if he had been fitter. I think Carlton Palmer recognises that his own talent was modest in international terms, and his point is that Le Tissier, a far, far more gifted player, under -achieved because of his lack of commitment.

Palmer is arrogant, claiming he was a "talented" player.

It's clear and obvious in what has saying talent only takes u so far. Look at the discipline the great players show to reach the hights if there career. Xavi Iniesta where all highly disciplined not looking like a pub player. Facts Carlton had a better career so put that in your pipe and smoke it. What has Mat got to show.

Just watching Glen Hoddle in his playing years moaning that England didn't pick flair players. So sad. To see how he treated Le Tiss who idolised him and represented all Glen was. Such a shame.
