Matinicus Island Maine

The Island of Matinicus is some 20 miles southeast of Rockland, ME. A working lobsterman's island, it has a small year-round population and few of the amenities we often take for common such as stores, restaurants, and hotels. It does have a small lodge, and a seasonal art gallery and studio belonging to David Sears, a well-known Maine artist working in a variety of media. It boasts a beautiful environment including dense forests, walking trails, sandy and rocky beaches and views in all directions from coastal vantage points.
Accesss to the island is possible by a state ferry that calls up to four times per month during the summer and early fall, daily air service from the mainland (weather permitting) and private ferry services provided by island residents. Visitors usually choose from among a small number of rental homes and cottages and must arrange to bring or fly in all the food they will need for their stay.
This video draws upon four visits we have made to the island since 2013. We hope it gives you a sense of the Island's beauty and special features. Our thanks to the many friends we have made over that time. Every time we depart, we immediately begin planning for the return trip.

I cried watching this video. Our family had a house on Matincus Island for 20 years. Ever since my dad passed away, we never went back. I love Matincus Island.

What was the aftermath of the shooting there in 2009? Did island residents get to lobster that island coast area without interlopers from the mainland -- and accept a 300 pot limit, as another lobster island did? With so many people cutting buoys around there, I'd think a diver could find a lot of ghost traps. Some might even have lobsters in them.

Matinicus is not a place that caters to sailboats. Boats do pause there for shelter, but there are not shoreside amenities to greet you nor pubs in which to gather in the evening and be "entertained" by the locals. These are working lobstermen and their families. Dropping by once and not having a "friendly experience" is not the same as taking the time to get to know the island culture, the history, and the fact that their entire livelihood is tied to the sea and the catch and the weather... and onshore officialdom who try to make decisions and regulations that often have no link to realities of life on a very small island. To better understand, get a copy of Well out to Sea by Eva Murray who came to the island to teach in their school and wound marrying an islander and raising a family. It's a great read as are the many columns she has written about life on the island....some of which can be found here: freepressonline.com/Content/Columnists/-From-Offshore/50/167
