    Hi Mr Bicen, I hope all is well. I would like to ask: I tend to get stuck on some questions due to the working. I look at obvious steps but think that they're wrong, but then find out that they're right (e.g. expanding brackets when it seems wrong). How do I stop this? Should I go with it and see how it goes always? Thanks.

  • @BicenMaths

    @BicenMaths

    I would advise sticking with it and seeing how it goes, but monitoring it - if it feels like it strays too far from what you're aiming to do, or gets way to complicated, you'll need to return to the start and see if an alternative approach might have been better!

    Hello, For the longest time now, I've had an issue with Q3) b) ii), because I'm convinced that the answer of x=8 not being a solution is actually incorrect! Using laws of logs, we can know we can square the value inside the brackets of a log equation, so shouldn't this mean the 2log(-4) we get, becomes log(16), and so making the solution of x=8 valid. Furthermore, when inputting this equation into Desmos to verify, their graphing software favours x=8 over x=1!

  • @BicenMaths

    @BicenMaths

    Жыл бұрын

    BUT the equation says 2log(4-x), it doesn't say log(4-x)^2. So whilst they are equivalent, the original equation would not allow you to sub it in. That's what you should be checking.

  • @Leon_George

    @Leon_George

    @@BicenMaths Hello, thanks for replying! I'm going to sound a bit critical but I want to argue my point: in the past we have been required to be able to use these imaginaries values, there have been integration questions that require you to interact with ln(-x)-ln(-y) to get ln(X/y), which is real. This also doesn't resolve the fact that desmos allows x=8 as a valid solution? Also, why would mathematics stop us from squaring the value in the brackets?

  • @BicenMaths

    @BicenMaths

    Жыл бұрын

    @@Leon_George I hear what you're saying! But for the given equation, a negative value wouldn't satisfy it. There are equivalent equations where it does satisfy. I get that it is frustrating, but it's how it would be assessed in the exam I'm afraid!

    Hi Sir, for Q11 part a, I did a transformation to find what point P was. When doing the transformation, there is a scale factor of 2 and a +5 for the y values. Which one would you do first since the initial Y coordinate is 0. If you subtract 5 then multiply by 2 you get -10. If you multiply 2 by 0, then subtract 5 you get -5. In which order would you do this as they give different values.

  • @BicenMaths

    @BicenMaths

    4 ай бұрын

    I know that for cos equations, you always have the negative versions of the positive solutions, too. e.g. if you had x=30, -30 is also a solution. Another way of seeing this, is knowing that is 90 is a solution, then 360-90 is also a solution (standard result for cos is 360 - answer), which is 270. If I then do 270 - 360 (as it repeats every 360) then I get -90. Hope that helps!

    The trouble with your method is that it doesn't cover all the numbers, it only covers those numbers which are a multiple of 6, and those which are one more than a multiple of 6, so it doesn't exhaust all the possible options! For example, 14 cannot be written in the form 6a or 6a+1, only 6a+2.
