Mathews VXR 28 Review

Спорт

I have been shooting the Mathews VXR 28 for months now as part of ArcheryTalk’s 2020 Hunting Bow Project and now it's time for my long-term review.
The VXR 28 replaces the Triax is the Mathews lineup and the main difference is a new extended six-bridge riser. Combined with the CrossCentric cams, this makes the VXR 28 feel like a much longer bow - including an improved string angle compared to the Triax.
Draw cycle is a huge priority for me and the VXR 28 does not disappoint. The CrossCentric cams offer a very smooth draw with no nasty dump into the valley. I’d say it is the smoothest drawing bow I’ve tested this year, though it is a little on the stiff side. Let off is 85% and I’d say the valley is shorter than some others, which I tend to prefer.
At full draw you are met with cable stops that offer a reasonably firm wall. You also get a steady holding bow. Mathews helped make me a fan of shorter bows and the VXR 28 is an amazing long-range shooter even without a stabilizer up front. I don’t know how Mathews built a 28-inch bow that feels this stable, but I am a big fan. Throw on a target site and some front and rear stabilizers and I would happily use this as a 3D bow.
After the shot, the VXR is impressively quiet and vibration free. Mathews has really figured out the formula for quiet bows the past few years and the VXR carries on that tradition.
To test for speed, I set up the VXR 28 with 70 pounds of draw weight, 30 ¼” of draw length. I saw an average of 327 feet per second with a 350-grain Gold Tip Platinum Pierce arrow and 283 feet per second with a 477-grain Gold Tip Airstrike arrow. That was the fastest of any bow I tested this year.

I have the VXR 31.5. The more I shoot this bow, the more I love it. I had a Halon 32/6 and shot it well. The VXR seems to be everything I liked in the Halon 32, without the things I didn’t like. Great bow.

I picked up a VXR-28 this year. It has without a doubt made me a believer in more compact hunting bows. Before this year my newest bow was a Mathews Halon-32. Which I still own, and love. The Halon-32-7 is my favorite bow of all time. I am excited to see what Mathews will do in 2021.

My peep finally turned on my VXR 28. Took about 600 arrows through it in last 6 months and the added warm muggy weather to. The best bow i have shot. I have my first bow which is a Halon 32 6 absolutely loved it, it’s still my favorite shooting bow but hunting wise the 28 is better for me bc of my hunting style. The 28 is definitely smoother, grip i am torn bc i like the flat back grip bc it feels good on back of hand but I really like the engage grip bc of consistent grip placement. Overall this bow is my favorite one.

The engage grip has rounded edges so unless you’re a high grip shooter it’s extremely easy to torque this bow. TorqueLess side plates fix this known issue. I got frustrated, ripped the grip off and immediately shot far better groups off the bare riser. Zebra strings are terrible which is also a known issue. Besides that, everything else said is accurate. I love my VXR too but this is my one year unbiased review.

Hi Lucas, congratulations on another excellent video. The problem is that you can't understand what you say, if you could have a Portuguese caption here in Brazil you would have more followers because your information is very good and accurate about the bow. Thank you.

@@ArcheryTalkVideo Archery in Brazil is very large. But as in most videos only in English it is difficult to understand. If you see the willingness to put the subtitles in Portuguese in your videos. I share them with at least 300 people and in several groups. publicizing your work and your effort to publicize it here in Brazil. That would make your channel a reference here for us.

You don't need them unless you are having trouble with your tuning. The Top Hats let you move the cams left/right along the axle. I've had at least a half dozen Matthews bows in for testing and I've needed to use the Top Hats on three of them. The others tuned up perfectly without needing to change the stock Top Hats.

My other bow is a hoyt maxus 28 which is a sweet bow. I'm hoping this mathews isn't a let down. I do know off the bat it's a heavier bow than the hoyt

It's not a lightweight, but for a super short ATA bow, it's nice and stable.
