Math Souls: Examining Critical Hits in Dark Souls (Backstabs & Ripostes)

Ойындар

Digging into backstabs and ripostes in Dark Souls! I've been playing with some mic settings, trying to get those a little better so if there are some weird audio sections I do apologize.
Here is the spreadsheet combining last video's efforts and with the inclusion of a critical hit calculator!

    Looks like I forgot the Dark Silver Tracer for weapons with boosted crit ratings! It has 160 so it is the highest in the game. Always check your work people!

    That the Hornet Ring, but not PW, improves damage from buffs on criticals is very interesting, and I definitely didn't know that before. EDIT: This is a 'buff' for the Stone Greataxe since it is weaker but Enchantable, though the Demon's Greataxe stays winning haha

  • @LaughingThesaurus
    @LaughingThesaurus22 күн бұрын

    I suspect the hornet ring applies the bonus to elemental damage because it's boosting the backstab's motion value, which, motion values are applied to weapon buff damage, because if they weren't, weapon buffs wouldn't do anything at all anywhere. The red tearstone ring probably doesn't affect it because it only boosts the weapon's inherent AR (as it is an AR boost, and not a Damage boost, or MV boost)

    the mistake on divine weapons with your reasoning being essentially "i looked at the number and pretended it didn't exist and was blatantly lying to me for 10 years" was genuinely funny, why you would assume that a number that was different on multiple weapons was just a yes or no toggle switch is beyond me, it even changes the scaling to be 70% faith

    Nice, keep up the good work! 17:43 to put it in my own words, fist backstabs are 2 hits (vid said 4) and it takes 3 hits to poison these hollows. So the second backstab accomplishes the 3rd and 4th hits but even though the 3rd hit applies the poison status, it doesn't start dealing damage until after the 4th hit. Interesting! I wonder if the status duration is delayed or if those poison damage ticks are lost?

    Honestly I’m not sure, I didn’t test that. Interesting question though. My guess without testing would be that it isn’t lost and the full suite of damage is applied.

    If you Proc a bleed on a riposte or backstab does the victim take the % bleed dmg or do they I-frame the bleed dmg loss like during a roll. Hm fist weapon with a strong weapon buff+hornet ring hm likely very strong damage even in NG+. Maybe I will try it out In DS1 fist weapons are very weak compared to other in the series. Is it possible to determine how monsters and players lose the status bar over time? For players, it seems to lose a fixed value each second but just a guess. Edit: I think you can also perform the "special plunging attack" on the sub-boss boar in the Undead Parish.

    I don’t know about PVP in relation to iframing bleed prices, but I have to imagine it would just occur the instance the animation of the crit ends (similar to how the poison starts in the video). I’ll have to check on status gauges. Not sure tbh.

    I'm surprised you didn't xpound upon damage split in criticals. In practice, infused weapons with higher total AR split between two types (e.g. fa chaos+5 dagger vs dagger+15 with 40 dexterity) always do more damage than pure physical despite going through flat defense twice. I had always heard that this is because criticals have a specific interaction with enemy defense that make split damage better, but after watching this and your previous math video, I'm not so sure. Can you clarify what I'm talking about with regards to split vs physical damage?

  • @trevthedev6134

    @trevthedev6134

    22 күн бұрын

    Well, I think there may be some truth to that in later games perhaps (ds3/ER), but at least in DS1 there isn’t really “flat” defense, just defense. Defense is more or less the same in those installments, but they also added an absorption stat (like 30%, which would just mean that your damage would get reduced down to 70% of whatever this same calculation would spit out). Not a thing in ds1 however. So for a 2-hit backstab, you would just run the calculation 4 times using the elemental attack and elemental defense of whatever enemy. The reason that split damage is usually better when at similar ARs is most enemies tend to have lower elemental defenses than physical defenses. Take the hollow I used as a testing dummy; he has a physical defense of 85, but elemental defenses of 64 for fire and magic and 60 for lightning.

    @@trevthedev6134 In practice we know split damage weapons are almost always worse than their single damage counterparts, and after spot-checking some numbers following your response, it seems to me that the issue is twofold: firstly splitting the damage can lower the damage calculation bracket of each damage type, and secondly smaller AR numbers have a higher percentage of reduction when run through even the same bracket. If I'm understanding this correctly, assuming enemies have equal physical and elemental defense, this means that split damage weapons that are not split equally will always do more damage than split damage weapons split equally, assuming both have the same total AR. This also means the breakpoint of total AR for split damage weapons to do more damage than single damage counterparts is much more complicated than I thought. As a side note, your damage formula is significantly different than the one on the Wikidot. Is yours more or less accurate?

  • @trevthedev6134

    @trevthedev6134

    22 күн бұрын

    Indeed you are correct on the first point. You could chart it in a lot of different ways, but the most damage at endgame levels will almost always still be a super high AR weapon with unsplit damage (iirc the Demons Greataxe with crystal infusion will almost always win out), but I think there are some point mid game where an infusion would technically be better. I’d have to look at the numbers to make sure though. In general though yes when you have equal AR, a weapon that is slanted one way will always deal more damage than one that is evenly split (assuming equal defenses!). For the damage formula, they are actually the exact same for 4 of the 5 “tiers”, so whomever went through and back engineered those should get some serious props! The only one that isn’t technically correct is the 2nd lowest level (atk/def between 1/8 and 1). I think wikidot’s slightly overestimates damage if I remember right. I was told however that the one I have in the video was detained and checked it myself and everything matched up with the numbers I used for testing (like those in the video).

    @@trevthedev6134 Very interesting stuff. I'm speaking from a place of experience in meta-level PvP (SL 100-125 for DS1), so split damage is definitely viable in many areas there. I brought up the chaos+5 dagger because that used to be the meta critical weapon for almost every build due to its low weight, negligible stat requirements, and incredibly high critical bonus. Obviously that sort of PvP is dead nowadays, but I still find the sort of optimization interesting, so these videos and your responses have been fun to think about.
