Mate Review: Canarias (Serena)

A true classic. Earthy, root-y flavor with a moderate amount of caffeine.

Friend, you just forgot to mention that this yerba mate is Brazilian (as it is manufactured and produced in Brazil) it is only of the Uruguayan standard! Canarias Yerba Mate is a standard Uruguayan type, but it is produced and manufactured in the state of Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil.

Great observation about the caffeine being thrown to you pretty fast. Taragui has that effect too, which I really enjoy. keep the reviews coming. Thanks!

Another great review, Jon! I’d love to know your French press recipe. Specifically, how much maté you use in relation to water, as well as the ideal water temperature and brewing time. Thank you!

Hey there! This is a good video idea, I would have to measure how I normally do it. I want to say my water temp is around 180-190F.

I prefer Argentinian :) I found that out because I bought this. and I agree a coffepress is the way to go.

I think it depends on the type or brand of yerba mate you're drinking. Most argentinian brands have "Palo=Sticks" (Yerba mate elaborada con palo), less powder and the leaf have a bigger cut, same reason most bombillas in Argentina have bigger holes compared to bombillas from Uruguay or Brazil (Tereré and Cimarrao mates are powdery, the holes in those are smaller for the same reason). Its so complex really., from the shapes and materials, some made out silver, steel or tin. The gourds! Traditional materials like "PaloSanto", Horn, and new ones made out borosilicate or silicone. So far my favorite way is with no gourd and no bombilla, just "mate cocido" in my travel french press and tereré in the summer

Really enjoy Canarias. I am trying the yellow version, which has a strong caffeine punch. Wonder how it compares to the Serena version.

How hard is it to buy the traditional apparel to drink it? O always wondered if gaúchos who move to another country can still buy the stuff to make the true chimarrão.

I was told Canarias Serena is more the a "chill down" effect. Is this true? Is it something I could drink after a 7pm gym workout?

I can attest that mate certainly has less of an aggressive energy buzz compared to coffee, but it is still very high in caffeine. Everybody's bodies may react differently to caffeine. I have met people who drink mate before bed, or coffee to help them sleep. Personally, if I drink mate past 3, I find I have trouble sleeping. You'll have to answer that question for yourself :)

@@JonsMateReviews Ah ok I get you. I'm very new to Yerba Mate from South Africa where it's super rare to find any one who drinks it. I'm learning as I go along. I am fascinated personally by the entire Yerba Mate process, the health benefits, but I can't relate to the social aspect to it as I don't have anyone around me to share a Mate with or speak about it, so I'm pretty much alone in it. This makes it more difficult to learn new things. Also getting Yerba and the accessories shipped to South Africa, I have to do some digging online. But nevertheless I think it's lovely and eventually I would like to try so many different Yerba that I can find my niche and daily go to morning/mid-day/evening Mate' any help I would really appreciate 👌🏼
