That’s an interesting point about the tapered tip having to go farther. I waited for the 29 piece cobalt set to come out, and have been impressed with it. Have drilled through some hard steel and they have not dulled. I’d still bet on the industrial USA bits like Viking / Norseman being the best overall bits, but that self centering / non-walking of the hyper step is sweet. Plus the warranty.

Got both my sets for 250 each from my dealer. He always has a full set set aside for out shop for warranty. We are a fabrication shop and drill 50-200 holes a day. Love these bits. They do get dull just like any other bit but oil goes a long way. We ended up getting all the way to 3/4 in these as well. They are expensive but we have warrantied out enough to already pay for themselves for sure. The thing we like most about them is the true perfect circular hole you get with them and they dont snag on steel.

So true about the right bit for the right job. Most of my craft projects involving wood and/or acrylic drilling needs Brad Points or Forstners bits. My metal work etc. drill bits are a whole different animal! Also cheap bits heat up faster the quality ones from what I have noticed! Take care CP!

Good point, no pun intended, the steps take up a good bit of depth, no pun intended. i'll reserve the hypersteps for when i have to go all the way through and not to a critical depth. I love my corded mid handle DeWalt DWD215 for drilling. It doesnt have a brake on it like the cordless though so if you get hung up you break your wrist. id let my colleagues use my bits if they were more like Brian actually making chip curls and not going full speed

Start off with the hyperstep, finish with the split point. Also, if possible, know your bit depth ahead of time, then mask off the safe depth point around the bit so you dont over drill to deep.

That's and excellent observation. Thanks for that. I do drill alot of manifold studs always wait for the drill bit to push through. That's not going to happen with a stepped drill bit tip.

First off Mr. CP why do mechanics refuse to use a cutting fluid or a 50/50 water to soap to keep your bits from over heating as an ex-machinist I laugh when mechanics complain about their bits dulling. As for the over drilling that is on your so called professional technician.

Watch Abomb79 he rarely uses oil or coolant while machining is that any different on mill or lathe vs drill? I always thought you use coolant even with carbide??? If you don’t know who he is watch his channel he gives a lot of great set up and technique info. Very easy to blow 25/35 min before you even know it on his vids. Old school. No CNC.

@@ducatiparts966 I worked for precision steel and welding, in my shop I operated a horizontal lathe, 2 end mills and 2 drill presses all built in the late 30's by Cincinnati. I built heavy equipment parts for Cat, John Deere, Jcb, Case with less than a millimeter to a half millimeter tolerances. I did it then and do it now the way I was taught by a gentleman who did it for over 55 years but I will check out his channel.

@@ducatiparts966 I've been a machinist for almost 20 years , manual and cnc machinist. Its ALWAYS better to use a cutting oil when machining or drilling. Coolant is mainly used in CNC where the coolant spray can be contained. But when drilling, manual milling, turning, ext it's always recommended to use cutting fluid

You switch to a flat bottom bit. It’s not the bits fault guy should have marked his depth. If he kept drilling with a regular bit he would have gone thru too. So go 80% and finish with a flat bit and use a bottoming tap

@@CPthetooladdict I guess if you know how long the stud is then you subtract the broken part from the length of the new stud. Remove another one and measured the depth of the hole? If you don’t know the depth then you would drill thru with whatever bit you were using.

@@CPthetooladdict not trying to cause an argument but your title is found an issue with the hyper step. I see it as an operator issue. Bits fid their job and yes it’s good to remind people that’s the full width hole is not full width the complete depth but I think the guy drilling that hole would have drilled to China no matter what but he was using. So for him to give you shit about recommending them is BS. They did their job just as you told him they would, he needs to think more about what he is doing. They are good bits I like them and use them often.
