MATCHBOX Restoration No 64a Scammell Breakdown Truck 1959

This model had been buried in a garden for at least 30 years when it was discovered and then sent to me. It was worse than I imagined. At first I thought this could not be saved but I took up the challenge. Very slowly, one part at a time, it started to transform. Eventually a small miracle occurred and it became a display worthy model which is now part of my collection.
I'm back home now so I shall be back on schedule with my weekly uploads!

    The code word within the video "trump" was simply used as a password for a winner of the monthly patreon giveaway, It in no way means anything other than that. In hindsight I should of used another word, but its hard to keep track of everything that might be offensive, I try my best.

    Marty, as a person who likes to restore old tools and vises as a bit of a hobby, the absolute best rust remover ive used is "Evapo-Rust". you can buy it in small quantities or large buckets. its reusable and lasts a long time. just fill a tub, drop the parts in, and let them soak for a few or so hours. best results are 24 hours, but for axles like that 3 hours should probably do it. it doesn't attack metals, just rust. just after a while it does start to stink. its non toxic, no fumes, doesnt burn like acid... it just... gets pretty rank after a few many uses.. lol

  • @dart70ca

    @dart70ca

    4 жыл бұрын

    spartan36789 Agreed. Been meaning to comment for some time now and you're the first to mention EvapoRust. Hopefully available in Aus. I would recommend NOT using any type of acid on these things as the alloy they're made of may react poorly. Coke does not do much IMO, and the active ingredient is phosphoric acid anyway. Vinegar is acetic acid and comes in different strengths (labelled on the container). The strongest I've used is 5-7% (pickling vinegar I think). Citric acid powder should work as well. Again, I believe you run the risk of a reaction with the Zamac alloy and I would avoid them. Electrolysis is great and probably cheapest in the long run. Can be slower than EvapoRust but will not touch anything but the rust. Borax powder with water is the electrolytic medium and should not bother the alloy, but I would check first. Arm and Hammer washing soda is what I use here in North America. Used for washing laundry. An old style non-automatic 12V battery charger for a power source. EvapoRust is great but can be a tad pricey. Easy on your skin, environmentally friendly, should last quite a while loosening tiny parts like this. May stain things a bit darker. Enjoy your videos immensely Marty; keep it up!

    Marty, if any rusted axels may come by again then use the electrolysis technique. All rust wil jump off until bare metal accurs. Then the process stops. I used it for an old rifle, this way all letter and number stamps wil be untouched instead of using chemicals or grinding

    Have you considered using a soldering gun and building the metal out. To them be able to file it to liking. Solder is solder hard metal.

    Someone has tried this and found the solder doesn't adhere well to the zinc. I can't remember who.

    I have used a product called navel jelly. It is dangerous and powerful. It works promptly. Some type of acid, like vinegar, only deadly.

    Marty we used a blasting device, used By dental technician the Sand you use is 150my and After that you use 50my Glas pearls, with that you get the old paint away and clean and polish the metal. No paintstripper anymore, no brushes or dental tools to get the dirt out of tiny corners, you clean wverything, also you have a good Compressor that you can use for it. Search for this : Renfert 3-Kammer Sandstrahler Basic Quattro Best Regards Marco

    Better off using lemon juice instead of wasting Coca-Cola. They are both acidic, but really don't have much rust removing potential.
