Col. Cullen Jones, USACE New Orleans District commander, is joined by Col. Christopher Klein, Vicksburg District commander, and Mathew Crawford, a civil engineer for the New Orleans District, as they discuss the importance of the Mat Sinking Unit.
The Mat Sinking Unit is comprised of personnel and vessels from the Vicksburg District that lay concrete mats along various stretches of riverbank of the Mississippi River. These mats help form a protective overcoat to shield the riverbank from erosion and sloughing caused by channel currents and turbulent water associated with river flood stages.
