What I love about the mastodon dynamic is that Troy thinks he’s the Frontman, Brent assumes he’s the frontman, Bran hopes he’s the frontman. But Bill IS THE FRONTMAN

This was my third Mastodon concert and it was by far the best one. I was in the front of the crowd. During the intro of Megalodon at 11:30 Troy looked in my direction, so I raised the horns with my right hand. Troy saw it and nodded. After that I put my thumb up with my left hand and he did the same. I'm really glad the camera crew captured that moment.

Grant Bowen dude i wouldn't even give "metal" the time of day (besides Metallica) before my drummer showed me these guys my sophomore year of high school. Them and Black Star taught me never to take a book by its cover, musically. Just saw these guys with Clutch yesterday. I love how every single one of them has their own unique personality on stage - Troy is the uber-showman crowd-favorite guy jumping around and grooving everywhere; Bill is the strong, silent, serious type who focuses intently as he plays but just throws a pick in the crowd every half-song; Brann in the backbone who has a monologue after the show and never misses a beat during; and Brent is...well, uh...I guess he's the guy that wouldn't stop humping his guitar and giving the crowd weird feelings XD

MASTODON is one of few bands where I can recall within a 10 ft range EXACTLY where I was when I heard this AMAZING BAND the first time. I was in a Hot Topic at the local mall (in my hillbilly hometown in the Deep South near Atlanta, GA) checking out the latest music in the listening stations (because Hot Topic was a great place to discover New Music in the boonies in 2004) and the cover art work of Leviathan caught my eye. I strapped on the headphones and was blown away. It's been a love affair with Mastodon ever since. How about YOU Mastodon Fans? Do you recall the time and place the FIRST time your head exploded thanks to Mastodon?

Probably one of the best live performances I've seen of theirs. They seemingly have figured out how to pull most of the vocals off properly, and their guitar sound is ultra clear. Kudos to the sound engineer doing the live feed...well until he sucked out all the high end for 3/4 of the performance for some reason.
Great set with a good track selection. If I could only see Mastodon for 48 minutes, these tracks are (mostly) the ones I'd want to hear.
Also, the mix is fantastic and Brent's vocals are amazing!!
How could you be taking a nap when Mastodon is playing?!
I don't care what band you are...even a band as huge as Metallica...you have to be shitting yourself knowing you have to follow Mastodon's set.
they fucking rocked Chimes at Midnight! Troy Sanders is a beast, i cant believe how good his vocals sounded

me too, saw them for first time in 2006 and i was blown away. I understand this music needs a lot of energy to perform. Also Troy has changed his style a lot and since he has no great technique in singing, a combination of old and new songs would mess his voice@@EmptyDomoKanti99

@@thelastvigil111 their 2 best shows are live in the k pit with Scotty Kelly and Roskilde 2011. Saw them in person in fall of last year tho and they sounded awesome, they aren’t really a festival band tho so a lot of videos of them performing at festivals sound way shittier than the band does when they’re on their own headline tour.
The drummer is one hard working man.
This is one of their best vocal performances I've ever seen. Great set, very tight and amazing as always! Once More 'Round The Sun is another masterful album from this incredible band.
Mastodon is in peak form at this show... They sound AMAZING. Third time watching this in three days. Middle of a hot sunny day at a festival... Crowd is fine... Mosh pit... not needed...
This, in my opinion, was one of their best live performances. Excellent.

Tom Holloway Brent is arguably a better guitarist and song writer, he has a broader knowledge of music theory and can play more complex, fast chicken picking rifts and "shred" legato hammer on technique. not to bash on Bill he is such a solid rhythm guitarist and i believe even came up with the name Mastodon, based of his mastodon tattoo.
@TomHolloway123

yeah I agree but in terms of singing (whilst playing) I think bill is more solid
I was there for 3 days, seen The Rolling Stones, Limp Bizkit, Robert Plant(fuckyeah!) ), Ghost, Avenged Sevenfold, Metallica but one of my favorite performances was from Mastodon, so happy they did Bedazzled Fingernails! But the crowd is indeed pure shit.. people in the front(including me) were singing their lungs out. The majority of people are the typical hip festival jershey shore kinda people who seriously didn't know a band i just mentioned.. still glad i went there with the music & beer lovers :p
The sound mix is AMAZING!
I was there and I really enjoyed this show. I hadn't listened much Mastodon before so I only knew a few songs, they really caught my attention. It was a solid set and I agree the crowd is a bit dull, but at Pinkpop that's the case most of the time. It could be that it was because they were the first act on mainstage that day at around 13 o'clock.
I keep returning to this video. What a setlist! Naked Burn and The Sparrow especially
I keep coming back to this video... I really hope I get to see them perform live some day

oh man, I love the Sparrow, Brent is just soloing endlessly. Awesome. Thank you for the upload!
31:40 That chorus makes me want to happily run naked under the rain and scream "THANK YOU FALLING LIQUID FOR THIS MOMENT OF JOY"
The compositions are incredible. I'm not sure all the crowd understood what they were experiencing. 'Beethoven does metal'
For those reacting to the fact that the crowd seems sloppy and passive; I am a huge mastodon and metal fan, but I listen to them very motionless. It is just a culture thing, in some countries, especially northern Europe, crowds are more passive, but that does not mean they are not excited or into it.

Bill singing notes! how fucking awesome!!
Crazy how much these guys have evolved over the years and their sound has changed.. first saw em live in 2004.. gotta catch em one of the next times they're in the Boston area and I'm not busy working.
This band is so talented and individually they are such skilled musician and I feel very few actually appreciate that. They'd rather get mind numbingly repetitive chorus' to chant than to actually see some sick drumming and shredding.
Fuckin' giants!!! The new cornerstone of metal, along with The Dillinger Escape Plan... say what you will.
The Sparrow lose some of it's feels live I think. The intro is more heavy in emotions when the guitar is clean on the album.
This is the best live vocals I've heard from them. Always great on record, but there's so many shitty live vocal performances by them on KZread. They sound excellent here.
