The book on which this is based (titled "Masters of the Air") is over 600 pages long and covers the "Bloody 100th" for the entire war, hundreds of men over hundreds of missions all over Europe, so shortening it into into a miniseries was always going to be challenging. As uneven as this was, it's probably as good as nine episodes can be.

Yeah. People who are upset just don't have a frame of reference of just how bad it was to be in bombers during the day. A friend of mine had a relative who was a waist gunner. My friend was showing him this B 17 flight simulator. When he finished the run my friend asked his relative haw accurate it was. His relative told him for it to be accurate you would have to load 5 shells in a six shooter, spin the chambers and put it to your head and pull the trigger. Pretty sure he was in the 8th when it almost ceased to exist. Hard to do character development when 90% of your characters are going to die of be POWs.

It was okay. They could have fit more 100th Bomb Group stuff in there if they didn’t try and shoehorn in the stories about the Red Tails and the British spy. It’s hard to be all things to all people…they did okay, but it could have been better.

  • @juvandy

@@DanMcClinton yep. Episodes 1-6 are amazing. Episodes 7-8 are partially fictional and partially too meandering. Episode 9 was great and captures a lot of truth about the end of the war, but is also nearly entirely fictional in regards to the people being portrayed and what they actually experienced. It gets the spirit right, if not the truth. I think it was a challenge for them to make this, but they made it harder on themselves by trying to do to much, which forced them to have to cut narrative corners. I really didn't like how many things after episode 6 were told to us rather than shown. The cliffhanger of episode 7 about the bombers being bait and how the strategy was changing was RIGHT THERE, and they just whiffed it. That story, about how the luftwaffe was utterly destroyed in 1944, would have been a nice cap to the chaos on the allied side that we see in all of the prior episodes. I really liked the series, but I am mystified as to why they didn't complete their own transition from Act 2 to 3 there.

He was also shot down in September of 44 and was pulled from his plane by the French and returned to his base. They skipped over a lot of key points.

Ultimately, I liked this miniseries. I felt like it fell apart a bit at the end. It got away from the showing the bombing missions which were the strength of the series. It felt like it needed to be 2-3 episodes longer and they didn't have enough money to do what they really wanted to do. Certain episodes were excellent though so overall it was enjoyable.

Ok but this episode literally has a bombing mission in it. And a beautiful and emotional mission to drop food to the Dutch, who had suffered terribly under Nazi occupation for years. I know the action scenes are entertaining. I like them too. But you can’t sustain a mini series entirely on action scenes. There has to be a story and character development. There has to be complexity.

You'd be surprised when you look into these men. Them and a lot of other guys, from different bomber wings, continued to serve in the Air Force when the service called them back, asking if they would want to join SAC, or, Strategic Air Command, which acted as a deterrent for the entire Cold War. A movie that would put that into perspective is "Strategic Air Command," which Jimmy Stewart stars in, considering the fact that he flew B-24s in WW2. He also continued serving, albeit, in the USAF Reserves. Aside from Strategic Air Command, I would suggest watching "Best Years of Our Lives." That movie was made directly after WW2, and is about three Veterans coming back home, trying to readjust back into civilian life.

Awesome reaction!!! There was actually an attempt by the Americans to fly behind Soviet lines, land, rearm/refuel, and then return to England while conducting another bombing mission. Forget what the operation's name was, but someone in command figured that it would have been a good idea to just keep flying east into Soviet held territory instead of flying through the anti-aircraft fire and German fighters. The bombers were to then land at makeshift Soviet airfields. Believe this happened in 1944 -forget when. Anyway, believe this happened maybe 2 times that I have read about (maybe more, but not more than 10 times, could be wrong), because the logistics of flying bombs, munitions, fuel, spare parts, etc., actually proved that the idea was not really worth the effort. Also, the Germans figured out what was going on, and the Luftwaffe attacked the American aircraft and caught some on the ground at the Soviet makeshift airfields. Also, the forced march of the Allied airmen actually did happen. They marched from Poland to Germany, always staying ahead of the advancing Soviet armies. The motive behind this was to keep them as prisoners as long as possible. This happened roughly during March 1945 timeframe and in brutally cold winter conditions. The Tuskegee Airmen were flying/fighting with 15th Air Force primarily in Italy, where they were stationed - probably why they were not depicted as much in this series. They did do escorting missions for bombers flying from bases in Italy to targets in southern Germany, Hungary, Romania, Czechoslovakia, and other places. Have read stories about their exploits in Germany as prisoners - some probably wished that they were never shot down/captured by what I have read. All in all, this was my 1st viewing of this series, so will have to check it out in its entirety. Enjoyed the journey with the 2 of you!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @maishadigital8410
    @maishadigital84104 ай бұрын

Part of why they werent represented much of the Tuskegee airman in this episode was because in reality, there isnt a record that their downed POWs actually met the 100th. So in the last episode, they represented more of a composite of downed Tuskegee airman meeting bomber pilots in POW camps. Not neccesarily these guys. But adding more to them would have been creating history that didnt exist. They had lines, just nothing that wasnt generic to an officer, especially a Red tail knowing that it was his squadron attacking them on their march. There was also no mention of the British woman who parachuted into France, because in reality, she disappeared from the records and he never saw her again. Even her being in France is based on some scant records, but whatever files she has working for the SOE is sealed till this day.

Interesting tidbit covered in the book: so that February 3rd mission over Berlin (beginning of the show) occurred when a Nazi judge named Roland Freisler was in a court session. Freisler attended the Wannsee Conference that outlined the logistics for the “Final Solution” (industrial scale killing phase of the Holocaust). During the raid he was crushed as bombs destroyed the roof of the People’s Court in Berlin. So this is a leap, and he’s far from the only one, but combined with his involvement with the prosecution at the Nuremberg Trials, Rosie is directly involved in bringing high ranking Nazis responsible for the Holocaust to justice, both as an airman and a lawyer. Pretty neat dude.

Just on the subject of timelines (introduction of characters such as the Tuskegee Airmen)--we have to remember that the story being told is of the 100th Bomb Group and the focus are the 4 main characters of Crosby, Cleven, Egan, and Rosenthal. I do agree though that I wish we could have seen more of the Tuskegees in action and their stories (I guess I have to watch the movies available out there where they are the main focus) but at the end of the day, their involvement in this particular story being told was because some of them got shot down and brought to the same POW camp as the airmen from the 100th group. Overall, I am happy about this series--I appreciated the producers' desire to tell the story of at least the 100th and honor all airmen and women who served in WWII. I also see lots of complaints about CGI in other reactions, not necessarily here--to each his own I guess but I understand the realities not to mention cost of putting a production like this when we can't realistically show a dog fight or a bomber being chased by a fighter. What we saw in this series--I am happy about. If the families of the men depicted in the series are happy, I am satisfied. Thanks for coming to my TED talk.😂

Just one more episode in the middle, or closer to the beginning, introducing our red tails earlier and establishing more with our main characters, would have made a world of difference. EDIT: Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't they also not even bother showing us Demarco reuniting with his dog?! Demarco made it home, and I'm almost positive they didn't show MB at all after the episode where Buck and Demarco both get shot down off screen. Im pretty sure I would have noticed cause that's the main thing I was waiting for once we saw he was at the Stalag, was him getting reunited with his pupper. I feel pretty let down about it! 😅 Anybody else? JUSTICE FOR MEATBALL

I don't get the people complaining about showing less missions. 100th bomb group flew a total of 306 missions, they literally cannot show every single one of them and even if they did, it'd get stale seeing them jump in the plane, bomb and get back. Like what's the fun to that? They showed us the major impactful missions that were necessary to the characters. Plus they're not showing events of a few months, but years. Overall i really loved this series and it's up there for me with BoB and The Pacific.

As much as I enjoy Masters of the Air, and the story and plot of it. They got something wrong from the accurate storying telling of the events of episode 9, and I leaves me personally bummed out, because this stuff has to do with my bloodline and ancestry, anyways let me cut to the chase. In episode 9, they start out with rosie flying over germany completing his last couple runs. But as they we're flying they get shot down. In the show, rosenthal was able to make it down to the ground no problem, and then gets picked up in the protection of russian troops. Although, in actual WW2 events, Rosenthal ended up getting his parachute caught in a tree and Rosie starts to end up choking himself out, Until the navigator of that fortress, LT. Robert H. "Bob" Stropp, My Great Grandfather (His real name, you can look him up), saved rosenthal for him nearly choking himself out to death from his chute. There's more to the story that was inaccurate, like Lt. Stropp, and Rosenthal being put in a Prisoner of War camp in russia for months, without family knowing for awhile. But I wont get into it, And what hurts the most with my great grandfather not being included in the final episode, (We we're told he would be by directors, and other staff) Is that when my Great Grandfather has his funeral much later after making it back to the US, Rosenthal's Son came up to my father and told to my father, that my father's dad, Lt. Stropp, saved his dad's life.

It was great series, but with a little fine tuning it could have been awesome. Too much to tell in too little time. Episodes should have been 2 hours each. First half was intense and suspenseful, second half was quick wrap up of the war and what happened in period of like 1.5 years. 2nd half reminded of my "native language essays 300 words" at elementary school, once you noticed it's already 290 - just wrap it up quick. So enjoyed and disappointed at the same time with the series. PS: They could have like put the D-Day briefing on the right date instead of googling when did D-Day happen. Briefing wasn't on D-Day 6th, it was on 4th since they were meant to invade Europe in 5th which was postponed by a day. By the time they were celebrating in briefing invasion of Europe, most of England knew it was already under way. So stupid historical error, you had one job.

Yeah good point, the first trailer of this series was released like 10 years ago I believe with the title "Mighty Eighth". Then it looked like HBO dropped it because of money and interest, gave it to apple TV and they just revamped it. But if ur gonna take 10 years at least make it brief highlighting all the missions that took place. Not adding so much at the beginning and then rushing it on the second half...If HBO created it, it woulda been way better and on point.

I great show for sure, and I now feel like why this show was so expensive to do. And I can understand that they could only do 9 episodes with what they have. I was a little upset that we didn't get more air battles throughout but what they had was mind blowing and intense already. I just can't believe that they somehow told a story with so much material. As so many have said already, there is A LOT that was skipped over, probably due to time and budget. A slightly odd side note, I feel like they should have left the Tuskegee airmen out completely, it just opened too many story lines at once and right at the last bit of the show, they should have kept their focus on the 100th. We already have Tuskegee Airmen and Red Tails covering their story from beginning to end. (Yes we all know Red Tails is more....comic book like it's action and story telling) To be honest, they would need their own separate show to adequately tell their story so it was upsetting to me to tack them on at the end. Hope that makes sense? But the end got me emotional, I read so much about their mercy missions but actually seeing it was something else entirely. And also seeing everyone leave was an emotion in itself. I read how some felt a little empty when they saw the last plane leave, I believe it was a B-24 that was last to leave. Some missed the buzz of the bases and the crews and airmen afterward. It captured that fairly well. Last note! That kid with the garrison/side cap, I heard his experience at the base impacted him so much that later in life he was able to preserve Thorpe Abbots and turn it into a museum that we can visit today.

Overall the show left a sour taste in my mouth. It had some good moments and a few episodes I really liked but... It completely lacked focus. It jumped all over the place and rushed through everything without giving it the time to develop. They never held onto a plot thread, there is no character development, they failed to meaningfully convey anything about the development of the Air Force, bombers, fighters, bombing strategy, or anything else beyond including a throw away line here or there while failing to accurately visually depict the developments over the war at the same time. So much made up stuff included while they speed through or entirely skip their actual stories. These men's real stories deserved to be told and given the time necessary to tell them with meaning. To do justice to everything they tried to do, they would have needed I dunno, 24-30 episodes, so I just can't figure out why they tried to shoehorn everything in and do it so poorly. They could have focused just on Buck and Bucky, and told their stories. They could have focused just on Rosie. They could have focused just on the Tuskegee Airmen. But because they tried to do them all and failed, we will probably never see them done well now. A lot of excuses are being made for this show that just don't stand up to reason.

I think the only scenes in the whole series which hit me were aircraft returning home, firing flares to show they had wounded on board, crash landing, or taxiing straight to the ambulances to save any time they could. Men almost falling out of exit hatches, and throwing up. There is a similar scene at the beginning of the great 'Memphis Belle' movie. But 'Masters of the Air' was a cheesy mess beyond that. Having a German character literally say, "For you ze var is over" was pretty much the last straw for me, I have to admit!

I liked the mini series but it wasn't close to Band of Brothers level. They should have spent more time in the air to be honest. They had too many subplots that were tied up with voice overs or throw-away scenes. Like the airmen who were downed over France and helped by the underground. They spent quite a bit of time on that then a voice over and them riding bikes was it? And the Sandra subplot where we find out she's a spy amounted to next to nothing. Croz got a goodbye letter in the hotel room to end that plot.

Although considered the highlight of the series, personally, I feel it could have been more impactful compared to its predecessors. Many episodes focus on partying and celebration scenes, giving the impression that the war itself was merely a backdrop. Additionally, the frequent use of masks during battle scenes made it difficult to identify characters, especially the secondary ones. I expected a deeper exploration of the soldiers who joined the French resistance, especially after their fall in Germany, but their swift return to base seemed somewhat disjointed. Overall, the series sits at most on a mediocre level in my opinion. I'm from Brazil, sorry for my bad english.

I think this series was an example of Hollywood going out of their way to showcase the contribution of black people in WWII just because they felt like they had to checkmark some boxes.
