MASTERS OF THE AIR Episode 7 Ending Explained

Ойын-сауық

I review, breakdown and explain Masters of The Air Episode 7. I discuss the Apple TV+ show which stars Austin Butler set during World War Two. I react to Bucky and Buck in Stalag Luft 3, The Great Escape being referenced, the true story of The Great Escape and also Rosenthal completing 25 missions. I compare the show to the real events that the 100th Bomb Group experienced, Band Of Brothers, and I also give my theories and predictions on episode 8.

Man that scene where they make that turn after hitting IP towards target, with the enemy coming in at 11olck high, then seeing the p-51s race ahead to intercept. Is just…..breathtaking. I can not imagine seeing something of that magnitude up in the air like that.

Couldn't agree more on the Quinn/Bailey storyline. There was definitely a lot to look forward to on that journey but I suppose with only 9 episodes, there just wouldn't be enough time. Miller's book goes into more detail about the Maquis and the resistance overall which was a journey less than easy. So I imagine that subplot couldn't be developed further either way. And don't get me started on the Westgate/Crosby trope😭😭😭 I really wish they could have kept the infidelity out of the show. Crosby mentions Wingate (aka Westgate) in his memoir from what I know but whether they had that type of relationship, I have yet to find out. In my opinion, he did likely have an affair, given the nature of a lot of married men in the war, but I don't think he would ever mention that in his book. Either way, I struggle to understand where the show will end with only two episodes left. We have entered Spring of '44 which is nearing some of the greatest American air offensive in the European theatre, but there are still the loose ends of so many things. So far from the teaser clips at the end of the episode, we have what looks like elements of The Invasion, The Great March, The Tuskegee Airmen, and now Subaltern's role will potentially be revealed. HOWWWWW will they tie it all together in just two episodes? I'm eager to know. Honestly, this show deserved 12 episodes at least or even another season or something😭

Only one bone to pick about this episode. The P51 escorts would have been above the bomber formation not flying with them at the same altitude. Also, the Mustangs are depicted as P51Ds which were not yet at the front during the March raids on Berlin. The P51s would have been the earlier 'razor-backed' B and C models. I do think that this 'mistake' had more to do with the expense and complexity of doing the computer animation necessary for the scene than a n actual over sight. The P51 was the best British airplane ever built in America.

Seeing all the comments makes me sad. I’m still loving every single second of every episode. All the characters are amazing and while story is a bit rushed I think as long as episode 9 gives us a definitive conclusion then it’ll be fine! I think people were expecting something a little different. They wanted something like Band of Brothers who balanced the romanticism and violence of war quite well. What we got was really just the romanticism while something like The Pacific only showed the violence of the war. Personally I’m okay with that but to each their own 🤷🏻

Another thing (as well as the fact that the men were captured less than a week apart) was the time lag for communications. The Germans had to notify the Red Cross of the names of prisoners taken, the Red Cross had to notify the American or British governments, and the governments would then then notify the families. ALL this is in an era before electronic communication, so the notifications were crossing the Atlantic by boat. An exchange of letters would take weeks, if not months. The POWs were permitted to send letters home as well...they could buy stationery at the camp store (the Germans actually gave each man a stipend for purchases like this). However, such letters WERE of course, closely examined by the Germans for intelligence purposes. And of course, none of the men would write a letter addressed to "100th Bomb Group Thorpe Abbot"......

Another interesting inaccuracy is the use of tracer ammunition - it had been phased out by November 1943 (the episode shows a raid on Berlin in March 1944). At the same time, gunners were trained differently - only shooting at fighters attacking their plane when in a pursuit curve, not randomly shooting at everything that flies past. Oh, and the bomb drop rate (09:49) is five times faster than in reality. But hey, let's make it like Star Wars!

I think you are being unbelievably naive when you say they didn’t know what the radio was !! It’s the luftwaffe they use radios. To say they didn’t know what it was without headphones is ridiculous. Just a glance would tell you it’s a radio. What else in 1940 could it be !! For goodness sake On the camp scenes, I agree they seem to be worried they weren’t going to survive and better to try and escape. That’s the impression I got too. I wonder is that what happens and they get killed. But escaping isn’t easy and it seems only the British knew how. On the Thorpe abbots I think the reality was the aircrews did feel abandoned by their seniors as they were just sent up mission after mission with no thought. Finally I agree I too would have liked to see more on how the two escaped. Last we saw they were turning up in a city and one had panicked so I’d like to have seen more rather than suddenly they appear back at Thorpe abbots

I’m sorry but I have to say I was underwhelmed by this episode and it’s the weakest one so far for me. Some of the things I was unsure of have come to a head. The fact that we didn’t see black Monday in the air was unforgivable; that’s two pivotal air scenes they have just shown us the aftermath of. It’s a creative choice likely to not over do it , but it was the wrong choice. The creators need to know the most interesting part is when they are up in the air. The narration I let slide because I thought maybe it was just me but I don’t think it adds anything and gets in the way. The show misses the commentary from veterans at the beginning like BOB and the Pacific, I know there may not be any alive, but there are interviews up to as late as last year which was likely when this was in production. The dialogue between the two Bucky’s has too many dead pauses and sometimes the sparse dialogue in general makes the show drag. Finally, the CGI on Rosenthals last flight was just really cheap looking and very CGI ish especially with the P51s and the German fighters, and I don’t believe fighter air combat looked like that. When they dropped the bombs it looked like a PC game from 1998 . As we are 7 episodes in , I have to say it hasn’t met the technical quality of The Pacific or Band of Brothers (with the exception of episode 3 and 5 which I have watched several times) .

1 little mistake in the episode, crosby claims the mustang is 'by far the best fighter in the war' but the spitfire beats the mustang in pretty much every category, spitfire was faster, had a faster climbing rate, carried heavier firepower, could carry 1000lbs of extra equipment whether that be bombs, reconnaissance devices etc while mustang could only carry 500lbs

P-51 drastically changed the strategic air war. After Munster, 8th Airforce had to hit targets closer to home, because leaders finally figured out bombers can’t protect themselves without fighter cover. P-51 changed all that not the spitfire.

The main reason that fighter started making a difference was they added drop tanks to the planes. Something Churchill had asked the Americans to do. They finally listened.

@@legiox3719 It's about dogfighting capability, not what it can carry. And the P51D was superb dogfighter, while the Spitfire was perhaps the better all-round fighter. But carrying 1000lb of bombs is useless on long range escort flights. And the Spitfire XIV was the only variant that could marginally beat the Mustang P51D on speed and climb rate. And only a total of 957 Spitfire XIV were built. In contrast, there were 8200 P51D built. And the P51D was just about neck and neck with the Spitfire XIV for top speed and climb rate.

Review: Movie Title: Masters of the Air Director: Distributor: Apple TV Genre: War Rotten Tomatoes: 87% My Rating: 4 out of 5 stars Primary Audience: 18+ Year of Release: 2024 The First Media Key: Balance In the book Infinite Bandwidth, the first step of applying Media Key #1 is praying for the virtue of temperance which “is necessary for practicing the key of balance.”(Gan, pg. 31) Practicing the virtue of temperance is important because, “The temperate person directs the sensitive appetites toward what is good and maintains a healthy discretion.”(Gan, pg. 31) When looking at any form of media from all angles, its positives and negatives need to be evaluated as well as how much time was spent on it. The show exhibits balance when in Episode 2. The Americans and British are sitting down in a London bar drinking while on their weekend passes. Discussion arises over whether it is smarter to bomb during the day which is the position the Americans hold as it gives them the ability to perform precision bombing resulting in less civilian casualties but many more deaths among their ranks. While the British preformed their bombing at night which was less dangerous since they were under the cover of the night sky, the Americans preform precision bombing during the day with no cover The Second Media Key: Attitude Awareness In the book Infinite Bandwidth, the first step of applying Media Key #2 is praying for the virtue of prudence which “disposes practical reason to discern our true good in every circumstance and to choose the right means of achieving it...”(Gan, pg. 47) Through the TV Show we follow flight navigators who are abroad the flights during missions. These men were responsible for making sure the pilots were flying the proper routes and would make adjustments if need be. For example, If a plane was hit with bullets from fighter planes and flack and lost three of its four engines they would need to either bail or go down for an emergency landing. The navigator would calculate how far the plane would fly in its current condition given the amount of fuel left. They would then plot a route for an emergency landing. These decisions have deadly implications if a mistake was made. The Third Media Key: The Dignity of the Human Person In the book Infinite Bandwidth, the first step of applying Media Key #3 is praying for the virtue of justice which “disposes one to respect the rights of each and to establish in human relationships the harmony that promotes equity about persons and the common good.”(CCC Paragraph 1807) The dignity of the human person is seen numerous times during the show. One example of this is the way POWs were treated along with people who were brought by train to camps. The Fourth Media Key: Truth-Filled In the book Infinite Bandwidth, the first step of applying Media Key #4 is praying for the virtue of fortitude which “enables one to conquer fear, even fear of death, and to face trials and persecutions. It disposes one even to renounce and sacrifice his life in defense of a just cause.”(CCC Paragraph 1808) The show tries to be accurate to the true events of the 100th bomber group by referencing numerous resources whether it be, files, books or videos. They wanted to show the authentic events that unfold all those years ago. The Fifth Media Key: Inspiring In the book Infinite Bandwidth, the first step of applying Media Key #5 is praying for the “virtue of hope to be integrated into all media.”(Gan, pg. 95) The show is inspiring in numerous ways but one example is seeing what men will do in times of war to survive. The tremendous loss they deal with and how they move on. Their reality was facing death each and every day. The Sixth Media Key: Skillfully Developed In the book Infinite Bandwidth, the first step of applying Media Key #6 is praying for the virtue of faith; which is believing in God as Creator, Father, and the source of truth. The Catechism of the Catholic Church states, “...By faith ‘man freely commits his entire self to God.’ For this reason the believer seeks to know and do God's will. ‘The righteous shall live by faith.’ Living faith ‘work[s] through charity.’ ”(CCC Paragraph 1814) This is similar to being truth filled the show tries to be accurate to the true events of 100th bomber group by referencing numerous resources whether it be, files, books or videos. They wanted to show the authentic events that unfold all those years ago. Great casting and the right crew can produce a wonderful result. The Seventh Media Key: Motivated By and Relevant to Experience In the book Infinite Bandwidth, the first step of applying Media Key #7 is praying for the “virtue of charity; which can promote sympathy for and understanding of others.”(Gan, pg. 128) Although most living people today have not been in a world war, this show tries to give a better understanding to people like you and me about what actually happened. Along with the importance of remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice. The loss can be heavy on soldiers when you do lose someone in our own lives its important to grieve but move on since there is still more life left to live.

I absolutely hated this episode. They denied us of so many emotional scenes, like the emotional reunion of Quinn and Bailey. They didn't show us the most darkest mission, Black Monday, and just skimmed over the aftermath of it. Didn't show us one bit of the P51, which was a game changer in the air battle. The action scene was way too short. It was a whole lot of telling rather than showing in this episode. And I really didn't need to see 2 sex scenes. Why would you show our hero of the series commit adultery? It only tarnished Crosby's good standing with the viewer. Lastly, the stalag scenes were boring, and it was quite disrespectful of the show to not tell about the great escape. At least have the characters acknowledge how horrible it was that 50 escapees were executed. 😖
