He was 53 years old when he did this concert in Bercy, Paris in 2004. Truly an amazing performance by Brad Cole (keyboards, synthesizers, Vocoder), Daryl Stuermer (6 String Guitar), Leland Sklar (Bass Guitar), Chester Thompson ("Rhythm" Drums) and Phil himself (vocals, drums). It was performed in front of 20,000 + people at the "Palais Omnisport de Paris" and truly was, if not the greatest, close to the greatest live performance ever. It was from his "Finally... The First Farewell" Tour and this particular concert in Bercy started with an amazing "Drums, Drums & More Drums" track performed by Phil and his other drummer, the previously mentioned Mr. Thompson. Incidentally, this track ("In the Air Tonight") was the 17th in the tracklist sandwiched between Separate Lives and Dance Into the Light. Phil had the energy he had in this song all the way through to the end of the concert (as did his musicians). Now that he can no longer drum, his son NIcholas plays drums almost as well as the old man did--literally--Phil is 70 now. His son is on the Domino tour with Genesis currently. Oh and of course, his daughter Lily is rapidly becoming a famous actress in her own right. So, he's still doing alright I suppose (tongue in cheek).

The huge smile on your face when the drums dropped was priceless. This is one of the most famous drum drops ever. I remember when this song was first realeased back in the 80's.. you were just cruising along and then bam.. you were NOT expecting that! LOL... Like some others have said the airwaves were saturated with Phil Collins so I got a bit tired of listening to him, but in recent years have gotten back into him.. no matter what, you have to respect his musical genious. Thanks for doing this one, young man...

OMG, those drums!!! Wow! 9:32 and following. i'm so there. That music in the beginning was fascinating. This sounds silly, but I didn't realize they could make such keyboard sounds when I was a kid in the 80s. Fascinating. My favorite song by him, that never fails to make me cry, is "Groovy Kind of Love". I didn't know his was a cover until only a few years ago--I thought it was his song. Now what my dad said when I was six makes sense. At that time I thought he was saying Collins' cover was recorded 25 years before then. He was actually saying that the song came out 25 years prior, and that Phil had rerecorded it. :) Good memories. Okay, so... 2004, according to another comment, was when this was recorded. It makes sense with all the vocoder and keyboard stuff being more advanced. Love, love, love the drums. WOuld love to hear just the drum track for this.

Phil was the percussionist for the rock band Genesis. He became the lead singer of Genesis when then leader singer, Peter Gabriel left the band to pursue a solo career. Phil is in the top three of all time greatest song writers and performers. I believe only, Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney are ahead of him. Phil had the golden touch. He wrote several chart topping songs for decades.

It's the way his voice doesn't waver at all with the exertion when he's beating the hell out of his drums. He has such impressive vocal control. I've seen him live at least half a dozen times, and his concerts were always incredible. It's so sad he can't drum anymore due to health / spine problems. My favourite Phil Collins songs are "I Wish It Would Rain Down", "Against All Odds", and "All of My Life". My favourite Genesis songs (from the Phil Collins as singer era) are "Dreaming While You Sleep" and "Mama", but there are just so many brilliant ones.

This masterpiece is proof that good music touches souls no matter of age! For those who don't know details about Phil Collins: he was born in 1951, an English drummer, singer, record producer, songwriter, and actor. Collins is considered one of the world best, accomplished artists. Between 1982 and 1990, Collins achieved three UK and seven US number-one singles in his solo career. He said that story of this song (only a story, mind you, not reality) is that he saw the guy his wife cheated him with drowning and just stared while voraciously taking in the revenge. Also this show was maybe the last before his retirment.

I believe Phil wrote this song after he'd been on tour with Genesis for 2 months, he came home to find that his wife had left him and run off with someone else. His heartbreak is evident in the lyrics and his emotion in his voice. As for pounding those drums it seems he is taking his frustration out on them and belting the life out of them for the pain and suffering he's been through. That's my interpretation anyway as a layperson listening to someone who is totally devastated and showing raw emotion.

He hasn’t even started singing yet, and I subbed you ! I love your insight and breakdown ! “Better than the sum of it’s parts” ! Thank you my brother. You stated what I thought but couldn’t put into words. Good luck, and good fortune to you !

Have not decided my top three yet but this live version of "In the Air Tonight" is my number one. Jeezz it is so so so good. Second place is "Another Day in Paradise". Still not sure of my third placed top song from Phil Collins; might be "Easy lover".

Love the reaction & musical analysis. Phil is a giant, but he & Mike Rutherford & Tony Banks had an interactive genius that made them all even greater. I've listened to this song thousands of times (at least) since it came out, still get goose bumps as the drum drop approaches. If you're into drums, check out the duets between Phil & Chester Thompson (who is also a genius drummer). The way the 2 of them play together, trade off leading & following, is magic.

Take me home, I don’t care anymore, I missed again are my top three today. Take me Home from this tour is pretty special and worth a watch. “ I don’t care any more” live at Perkins palace is insanely good as well. If you want to see an even more pissed of Phil it’s a good one to watch.

Man I was 12 or 13 when I was on Sardinia/Italy Camping Vaccation at Seaside, listening to it when released in the early 80s on a Ghettoblaster and I remember that my bodys about gonna explode on the chills i had, walking along a river there to a City by sunset. So this masterpiece brought me back to it, thank you for the timetravel. Got tears as I listened to this masterpiece! Just unbelievable.....👍👍👍

I just watched the music video again. A week ago(?) (It's been a while since the '80's) You can barely tell it's the same song. Almost. Same singer. Words are mostly in the same order. But music is different and the same.

I know you question why Phil was happy to just drum for Genesis. Both Peter and Phil are geniuses for another level, but if you want any sort of explanation watch Peter perform In Your Eyes live. It's pure magic.

To be young and have music like this was magical. So many great British bands, live music and the talent was immense. Try Queen Bohemian Rhapsody. This song helped me cope with my Divorce I could relate to every word. Genesis were a bottomless pit of talent.

I’ve seen him twice, once on his first solo tour and then about five years later. They were both incredible shows. My top three songs by him, which is a tough choice, (I may have to go four), are: In the Air Tonight, I Missed Again, Against All Odds, and, with Philip Bailey, Easy Lover; however, there are so many In leaving out that deserve mention.
