    I also overlap the weed fabric to keep the weeds down . I take the tomato suckers for a new plant as well.👍

    The 6 foot rolls of weed fabric is incredible. Once I started using it, I finally started winning with my gardening. I don't garden without it.

    The fabric does work well for weed suppression. I put it on the walkways between the rows, and mulch the plants with leaves. Your trellis setup is pretty sweet.

    I'm trying to pull the trigger on some good quality weed barrier. Mostly for the pathways in my raised bed garden. But in my other area I grow in is about 8'x50'. There I will use it like you are and burn some holes for crops.

    Grew watermelon and cantaloupe last year on black fabric and it was HUGE success. No big or weed pressure on either. We live in Conroe TX area. We got 20 plus watermelon and about 30 cantaloupe last year over an area about 50% larger than yours you showed. The only other thing i added was I pounded 2” pvc pipe into ground next to where plants come up to fertilize plant roots once every week or two with liquid fish fertilizer into the tubes which are about 12” above ground. Good luck I’m sure you’ll get plenty of melons. I’m late planting my melons this year also.

    We have those aggressive weeds here but because it is dryer the roots are long tap roots. I use the ground cover. there is no other way. the weeds take over. I like the idea of laying the ground cover and pulling it apart to plant like you did the tomatoes. Then if you need to reuse the ground cover it won't have holes in it. Thanks!!

    So Pete, I buy commercial vinyl for bill boards that sold cheaply on facebook markets. They are way heavier duty than the weed barriers ;)

  • @petebeasttexashomesteading

    @petebeasttexashomesteading

    Ай бұрын

    The woven weed barrier cloth lets water and air through, I'm not sure that the vinyl will do that. But it might be good for putting it over your planting area during the fall and winter months to kill off any weeds before planting in the spring.

    Pete we love the weed fabric for our watermelon and cantaloupe. But we also put down a 2-3 inch layer of hay then the weed fabric to help out with them summer droughts. The hay helps hold the moisture. We been very successful with it. We’ve made over a 150 melons in a 50x60 ft plot. Only real problems we have are Coyotes and crows eating our melons. 🤦🏻‍♂️. Like always we enjoy watching your channel 23:29

    That's a great idea but be careful where you get the hay from because many hay fields are sprayed with broad leaf weed killer like grazon and when people use it in their garden, they end up killing their plants too. 🙁

    @@petebeasttexashomesteading yes Sir. They hay came out our own field so we know it wasn’t sprayed. 👍🏼 Ps. Just wondering why you haven’t made a pond to help with the watering situation last summer was horrible. But the hay kept our melons going. Our okra didn’t make it. Tomato plants we laid hay down and they done beautifully. It’s been two years we have the farm now. We still trying to settle in. When you go from small backyard gardens to 3 acre fields WOW! What a difference especially when your weather zones change we went from a 9 to 8 zone. As always we enjoy your channel and the education you share with us.

    Hi Pete, do you have a video on how you set up your trellises? wondering how long the T posts you used are and how you did the top 'grate' on that one area where you demonstrated using the tape gun. I am in far North Central TX near Gainesville and I hear ya on the aggressive weeds! This rain is supercharging them!

    I don't have a video on that trellis but I used 8 ft t-posts and drove them in about 2 ft and wired cattle panels to it. Then on top I wired 3/4 Inch emt tubbing and placed cattle panel on top.

    I stored my onions pretty much like you. then I heard (from youtube) and you can trust this or not. That you shouldnt cut the tops off the onions because that allows disease to get into the fruit. I usually get 3 to 4 months storage on mine except last year when it got over 110 and I had them stored in an old house place on my homestead.

    Yes you can but some types of tomato plants are bushy and is better to rope them against the trellis.
