OZ9 (love their vintage limiter), Shadow Hills beautiful Mastering comp, Waves: PuigTec EQs, Kramer Tape, MV2, and occasionally their TG mastering Plug in. Don't like to mess with multiband comps much since a lot of the best records made didn't really use them.

When he said heavy metal label from Newcastle I immediately thought of Neat Records who had A massive roater if heavy metal acts back in the day. I would go on to record all my demos years later in their abandoned space and came across so much amazing history, demo tapes, press releases all abandoned practically. They were huge for the area and spawned everyone from Venom to The Toy Dolls. Thanks Warren for another great video

hi warren, i love how you and geoff both express the importance of making new artists feel comfortable when you work with them, a producer/engineer with a warm approach will always get better performances with inexpensive equipment over one who has all the expensive kit but a nonchalant and cold attitude during recording.

Hey Warren, just a quick compliment on the excellent video. Gear is great, but humans matter. I really enjoyed learning from Geoff and have great respect that he knows what he knows and stands by his positions. Not every player might want Geoff to do their mastering because he stands for what he knows, but the smart ones would. Plus I really was enthused by his plug for the Thorens table. I still have mine and it works a charm. Not the only turntable that I have ever owned, but certainly the best.

I’ve often wondered if any company would be invested enough, and brave/confident enough to design and build a brand new, modern cutting lathe, or is the idea just not quite workable, even with the current reinvigorated vinyl market? Those Neumann lathes beggar belief, especially as Geoff says, when you consider their age at this point. They’re like the Concord of the vinyl world, old, but unsurpassed. I’ve watched a few videos with Geoff, but this longer entry is most appreciated, thanks Warren and Geoff, such a enjoyable and fascinating watch 👍🏻

Another outstanding piece of journalism Warren! In answer to your question, I currently use the Waves Abby Road bundle for my mastering (rudamentary as it is), and final tweaks with Ozone 9. KRK grp 8s + S10 sub + Sonarworks reference for monitoring. Mix checking in cans with Beyerdynamic Studio custom 1's. Always looking to improve as my budget allows. And, can I just add, it was like watching the closing scenes of "The Champ", when Geoff said there are no spares for the lathe, proper heartbreaking 😢.

They still made the Sontec 432. Randy Staub has Sontec after SSL comp as pre-mastering as a final chain in His mixes and He also said that it's the best mastering EQ or EQ in general that was/will be ever made. . "The legend says" that sontec even in bypass, just to run it through, it just gives a song a something. More everything. IK multimedia has a pretty cool clone of the sontec but I guess not many plugin companies were trying to do it because without the hardware this time - THERE IS NO MAGIC. Like with Manley Massive Passive mastering EQ: You run with bypass and still it just push the vocals and snare with more presence and this beautyfull high top end. Thank's Warren for Another killer episode! PS. I would love to Hear Your sit up interview with Ted Jensen at Sterling Studio and just pick His brain. He is THE ONE in the mastering world and did a ton of my favorite records as a final touch.

i was hoping to hear his thoughts on linear tracking turntables to me it just makes more sense in 2 major ways...the actual tracking of the grooves seems to have to be more correct as well as the tone arm not being dragged across the record but following the grooves across the face of the record thereby reducing wear n tear on the record but i worry that i might just be justifying my getting into linear tracking...altho my current turntable was a gift lol but in any case thanks to both Warren and Geoff for a really interesting and edumicational way to spend an hour

30:10 When I see that a record has been cut by Sean McGee I leave it where it was and look for something else. The last thing I bought was the 50th anniversary of Let It Bleed and when I put it on the record player the only thing I could think was that this man is deaf.

What does it take to make it sound good at the cutting stage? what we know: a good cutting head + stylus, a good master (obviously), a lot of power from amp section, a control cut... and thats it? i got some test cuts from various plants with a huge variety in quality. so what does it take to make it sound good?

That’s an excellent question! I’ve had that exact same experience. The companies that have been in business for years have so much acquired knowledge and newer ones springing up are learning fast. The skill required in this creation process is huge!

Nice 801's sitting t the back there. I've got the 802's of the same vintage. Wonderful speakers (as long as you have amps worthy enough)... Great to hear Geoff talking....sadly i think Loudness Wars killed everything.

Shocking that Mr Pesche hasn't got a clue about the massive number of factors that influence how turntable design influences reproduction. The view that a turntable just has to rotate the record at the correct speed and that the tonearm and cartridge are the critical factors became obsolete in the 1980s.
