Watch next: • Best Productivity Tool...
In this video: Learn how to leverage technology for digital note-taking and knowledge management to enhance your work productivity. You'll understand the importance of moving beyond traditional methods like folders and bullet points to more efficient strategies like the use of tags, databases, cross-database connections, and Artificial Intelligence (AI). Tom goes in-depth in explaining these concepts using examples across various note-taking applications and tools such as reMarkable, Apple Notes, Evernote, Tana, Heptabase, Notion and ClickUp. Tom highlights how understanding and implementing these tool agnostic concepts can change the way Busy Professionals approach digital note-taking and knowledge management.

I saw some recent videos on this channel and I was bored seeing the same basic information in lengthy video. BUT this one is really good. This kind of video is what brings me back to this channel.

Tags are everything. They are literally the one big thing that separates gmail from others. The "folders" in gmail are abstract, everything is actually tags. I look for tags FIRST, when I'm looking at new note taking apps. The fact that the Evernote guy doesn't understand... that speaks volumes.

This is hands down the best video I have seen about note taking so far. I strongly encourage everyone who is taking notes one way or the other to watch this end to end. Also check out the paperless movement and their ICOR approach. Brought my business to a whole new level. Works for small companies too - like me, a solopreneur with one part time assistant.

Thank you for the Video! You are so SPOT ON on the comment about Remarkable. I love the feel and the form factor but at the end of the day the notes are not connected. I keep also trying the IPAD (most connected for me) but really struggle on the size. I waffle back and forth between the 11 and 12.9. Was thinking of trying the 13”, very light but still large. Maybe back to the 11. If I could take notes edge to edge it would be perfect I think. I tried to. I for form factor but too small for me.Thank you!

Thanks a lot for another great video. That is really interesting and helps me understand better the principle behind different tools. The thing with tags is I think I still don't know how you know you've got to create a new one, how limited the number of tags should be, and so on. I think I could lable each note I take with one or two tags, ten or even thirty, depending on the level of refinement. When you've created, let's say, forty, how do you manage the knowledge of the tags themselves? That is a question I cannot really figure out, and is a bit of a limit to my own system, I guess.

Another big problems I'm facing is I never know if tags should be related to the very nature of the notes (like meeting notes, templates, thinking or whatever.) rr to the content, like topics that are included in the notes you're taking. In that case, topics could be very numerous. So how do you decide which topic should deserve a tag and which one doesn't? And what happens if you've taken, in the end, 30 or 50 notes that include a topic and you suddenly realize it should have beenn labeled? Would you use a search engine to go through all the notes, mentioning that specific topic, to label them, once at that specific moment, and then carrying on labeling forthcoming notes about that topic? 🙄

I think we must use Evernote very differently - while I do use notebooks to separate at the top level, tags are my most important tool. And Evernote's capture is still the best or at the very least on par with the best, IMO. Yeah it's clunky but after a spin around all the tools, I'm back with Evernote.

It is very interesting why you haven't shown the name of the original author name, as he is one of the most recognised peoples on the domain of note-taking :) Beside that, I fully agree with what is written in the Tweet post, using tags and relational links only creates systems that need support. And me as a busy professional I was down that road and there is nothing good at the end of it :) Tags should be used for discoverability not organisation. And at one point when we start having 1000 notes in the same tag it starts to get complicated enough to discover anything... and what is our solution do a search on top of it. So if we can skip the tagging and have the same result as with the EN search, then why do we need that extra step of tagging and back linking? After 3-4 years when you search something, are you gonna know the tag that you used 3 years ago for that project note, or you will want to find the information and discover the information inside of the note? This is where AI can help a lot...
