Masterclass Rem Koolhaas - 2 november 2017 - Kunsthal Rotterdam

i really like (and unterstand) the concept of car free cities, but what i always notice when i read/hear about these concepts, is that the architects, which "ideate" these futuristic solutions, tend to forget that the people, which convert their plans in to reality (so the builders), are completely dependent on cars/transportation... i mean, you can't take all your machine etc. to the construction site via public transportation... also what about medical emergency and similar (postal services will/could probably be done by drones etc...)? but i nonetheless am a big fan of these big ideas, this small factor just always stood out to me

i see car-free more as a buzz word for "city free of individual motorised transportation"of course we need to have paths for vehicles. Its just that in a dense enviroment like a city individual car ownership is much more likely not to be needed.

You can have no idea what the world will be like in 2040. Whenever you design it's always about the future. When you say this is a public space it doesn't necessarily make it an effective public space. Your works lack one important ingredient, a mix of humor and irony.

    - Why instead of discussing very far future, which will not probably be realistic anyway, and Instead we will concentrate on giving people some extra space out of what they already have? And at the same time trying to think about eco-friendly designs. Stop copying each other about Dense traffic in the future and autonomous cars. Serious people will never sit inside self-driving cars. And it's not going to happen.

They are all humans first of all. ;) How many of them are prepared to at least design School for their children for free. ;))

@@leojk8944 thanks for the fast response! I must say that despite over-positivity being criticized in this video, I think you are being over-pessimistic about people! :p Being prepared to do stuff for free should not determine whether someone is just looking for money, im sure that if that is the biggest issue in someones regard, power to him, however from a point of view of a competent person who can make a bigger contribution to a society and make their time more worthy there is other issues that should be adressed. Perfect example in this video, they are trying to figure out the HOWS of teaching and why it is failing.. (after 1:50:00)a school that doesn't teach is not a school, just a building Take a person like koolhaas for example, do you see him repeatedly building same designs or iconic buildings that his reputation surely allows? I dont think so, they surely become iconic but through adressing wider issues - ex. cctv tower - the design was surely considered to be 'wierd' by the government but was definitely not built for the sole purpose of earning money, 150 engineers were involved in making that structure possible, and that 'wierd' in otherwise very constrained possibilities of building design in china opens doors for self expression and pursuit of individual goals which is otherwise forbidden.. just a thought :p

LEO JK I thought the same. This are most American and European architects with fancy degrees, doctorates and PhD they all talk the same and say nothing. In my opinion architecture has to step down from its academic pedestal and be open and clear to all people, simple yet elegant and timeless solutions that address real universal problems not just the needs of the consumers of the first world countries.

Rem Koolhass is overrated basically what he did is to make an argument of capitalism over communism. Then everyone praise him because the American loves his argument as he suggested New York city has fantastic architecture, which I personally think that it is problematic. The spirit of architecture lies in the space and construction. There is no space and construction logic in Rem's work. I was educated at Columbia and the academia praised him a lot. After I practice, I found the concept is naive and unrelated. I think the old Gothic and Renaissance cathedral are intellectually more advance than Rem's argument and buildings.
