MasterClass: How a Professional Engineer designs a Retaining Wall

Grab a pen and paper, a cup of coffee and follow along with me in the design of a reinforced concrete masonry block retaining wall and footing step-by-step.
We are going to look at soil pressure, design of the stem, carry out stability checks like overturning, sliding and bearing check, design of the footing for bending and the reinforcement detailing.

Love your work mate. I am a Project Engineer on site but it's always good to know how to design structures. Have no idea how is that important to decide where to add a construction joint on site when things goes wrong with concrete pouring 😀

That's it mate. One of the best Project Engineers I've come across worked as a structural design engineer before becoming project engineer. He told me how useful those skills are nowadays. I'm not saying that every project engineer should work as a design engineer :D but they at least should understand the fundamentals behind the design. (in my opinion).

Thanks Mustang :) In the office we use a spreadsheet to streamline the design process, but you need to understand the design to build your own spreadsheet.

For the 'V' value in the bearing check at 31:00, the 147.22kN doesn't include the surcharge load, only Ww+Wf+Ws. Should V be 158kN?

I have bought the workbook and had a question after going through example 2. When calculating M* in example 1, M green and M yellow are subtracted but not factored by 1.2. However in example 2, M yellow is factored by 1.2. Can you clarify this please?
