Retaining Wall Design Example - By a Professional Engineer

Team Kestava! We are approaching 1000 subscribers! Today we are helping a fellow teammate that has an interview at a company specializing in retaining walls. Sooooooo
today we a small example on how to design a retaining wall by hand. the best part - it is also a civil PE exam prep question. this one covers all the bases. in this video we have a gravity wall design, we talk active earth pressure, at rest earth pressure, and passive earth pressure.
As always test run today's video 👉 13:05

Hey Rich good job yet again! If ever you have time perhaps you could do a design of retaining wall but also specify the rebar based on the moment and shear that it experiences from the retained soil. Cheers! Your videos are awesome and thanks for those!

Awesome video as always, just wondering which are the classes should I pay attention for the eit or the pe exam ? I know I have a long way to go, but I think it’s better to come prepared. Thank you.

Oh since there’s so many subjects such as fluid mechanics, materials, statics, dynamics and more. I was wondering which I should master by heart to be fully ready for the exam. Thanks.

I understand that the square might be inconvenient but isn’t placing it after the bracket implying that you’re going to take a tan of (45-theta/2)^2? You should’ve taken the whole equation in brackets and squared it. (Tan(45-theta/2))^2

where can I find the video of the "full length retaining wall design" you mention at 1:15 ? I need to design a retaining wall for my senior project and need a reference. Great video btw!

if the wall is retaining the river water than it would be considered hydrostatic pressures.

Hi Chris. If you were designing by hand you would have to split the force into a rectangular component and a triangular component and find each components contributing shear and moment on the retaining wall. rectangle would just be at the mid height of rectangle but triangle would be 1/3 from base. hope this helps and great questions!
