Master of Wine Uncorks a 60 Year Old Wine
In this video, I’m uncorking a sixty year old bottle of red wine from my birth year 1963. The wine has been stored very well, but it’s from a poor vintage and from a source not known for longevity. It was a tough bottle to open as the cork was fragile and it broke. Surprisingly, the wine retain some life. Tertiary notes dominated, along with some volatile acidity, but it was still clinging to life.

Happy birthday for 3 months ago, Bob. Fascinating. My record keeping is not always as good as it should be, so I'm sure I'll find the odd ancient bottle at the back of the cellar one day. One of my earliest memories of an event that helped turn me on to wine was a friend's 21st. We went to a posh restaurant and the food was ok but the service was terrible. However, they had Taylor's '63 on the wine list, so, in order to salvage something from the evening, we all ordered a glass. I had never tasted anything like it - and I still love vintage port to this day, 45 years later. Wish I had a bottle or two of that in my collection right now.

1963 for the Douro was fantastic, everywhere else, mediocre at best. I have a few standout wines as you described. Today, I’m in Portugal, drinking wines from the Douro. Cheers. 🍷
It's fascinating how wines change over all those years, though I dont think I'd be able to stay patient enough to hold out for that long. Cheers!

Yes it is. I kept this one only because of my birth year. All things considered the wine held up better than expected, I hope that’s true about me as well. 😂
Happy Birthday!

Happy Birthday... Have always enjoyed your informative videos and will keep watching... Would love to see more videos on different grape verities and on how to determine them through blind tasting

Majid, thank you for the kind comment. I’ve noted your request. I’ll look to work your idea into some future videos. This could be the basis for interesting, educational videos.
Have a 46 PX I’ve been sipping on for couple of weeks. Use my Coravin. It’s a wonderful treat. Great video

The wine was fun. The fact that I cellared it for so long is maybe more incredible.
happy birthday, Bob! What brings you to KL? Any wine bars or stops you'd recommend in KL?

Thank you Nick. My partner lives in KL, I’m there often to see her. A place called Lavowine is worthwhile. Excellent range of Bordeaux, helpful staff.

Thank you. I’m there often, it’s my second home. Love the place and there’s a surprisingly good wine culture in Kuala Lumpur.
Enjoying your videos. I'm glad I found your Channel. One question would you recommend using a strainer to remove the sediment on older wines.

Art, thank you for the comment. Glad you found me! As for a strainer, I never use one. If a wine has sediment, stand it upright for a day or two, then decant it with one slow steady pour. Stop when you see sediment appearing in the pour.
Did you finish the whole bottle or only the fist glass? Somehow, I would be scared to drink very old wines 😅

Drank just a single glass. It started to fall apart over about one hour. Nothing to be scared about! 😂
Lead is sweet, it attracts rodents. (And children).
