Bob, I appreciate this very much. I like fine wines but refuse to spend more than $20-$25 per bottle. I believe wine quality has improved significantly over the last 10-15 years due to technology, ag advances, economies of scale and winemakers' knowledge. Additionally, I believe CA wines from the more notable regions (Napa, Sonoma especially) are mostly overpriced. I've picked up many wines from Spain, Portugal, France & Italy, along with Lodi & Paso Robles from Trader Joes and have been very happy. Please keep up this type of content for us wine lovers who look for value. Well done Bob, from a happy subscriber.

I worked at TJ’s for 9 years, specializing in the wine department. Trader Joe’s does a good job of giving many styles and varieties of wines to customers at at low price, but most are average at best, not geared for wine aficionados. Try their Satis Dei from Spain (Grenache & Syrah), Bogel Old Vine Zin, Cotillion Pinot Noir (Santa Barbara county), Pontificis GSM ( Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre). The TJ Reserve Syrah from Washington was, to me, a bit lifeless with no identifiable Syrah fruit. They have a Reserve Shiraz from Australia that is leagues better. TJ’s sadly doesn’t have many stand alone Syrahs or even Petite Sirah.

I’ve tasted many of the wines you’ve mentioned. The quality range is spread wide. I agree that much of the range is not for the aficionado, but it can be a good inexpensive intro to wines that are off the most traveled path. With the WA Syrah, I found it needed time to come around. Your comments are much appreciated.

Bob, I found this video when looking for something else about Trader Joe's. Oddly, I had just come home from TJ's where I bought a very newly arrived bottle of the Lot 237 2022 Wahluke Slope Syrah you mention - there is also a Wahluke Slope Cab Sauv, different lot no., but syrah does pretty well in Washington. When you said it needs time, I paused the video and popped the cork, splashed some out, and swirled. I agree this is a fantastic find at $10! So - will it age? Look forward to trying the other 2 at the top of your list. Thanks!

Hi Bill, fortunate coincidence that the video and your wine purchase at TJs aligned. The Syrah will age well for a couple of years. The weight, structure and tannin levels support some short term aging potential. Cheers! 🍷

Bob, I watched the video and thought, well I'll grab one of those Zins from the local Trader Joe's and have my own tasting and commentary to you. But it turns out my local Trader Joe's doesn't have it, and the wine selection there was pathetic (Mostly beer and cider). Grocery outlet has about twice the size of what TJ was offering, with only 3 Zins total and one was Bogle which is everywhere. It's like Oregon is not a Zin market since the grape is pretty uncommon in the pacific northwest. The other two wines were there. But Syrah, and Pinot, I have many of those in my cellar and wine club access to local wineries that make those wines so TJ is not going to be able to top what I can get locally of those two varietals. So, the replacement Zin for pizza dinner out of my cellar was a 2019 Ridge Sonoma three valleys Zin, well, mostly Zin. A bit of blending but not enough to kick it into "Red table wine". It was a very good quality wine that definitely tasted of Zinfandel, but tamed. At nearly triple the $10 price point, how do you think the Boeger would stack up against the Ridge? One thing I love about Zin is the "Paisano" character of the wine. The Ridge put a nice shirt and tie on it.

Hi Ron, thanks for the comment. Sorry to hear you couldn’t find the wines. That’s a challenge when discussing most braid market retailers, the offering can vary by market. As for the Ridge/Bogle question, they are like night and day difference. With Zin, El Dorado or Amador will typically be the biggest, densest version. Lodi a bit less so. Any for Sonoma will show more forward red fruit and usually a bit less alcohol. I hope this helps.

Good video. There is no portuguese wine in Traders? I think Portugal offers the higher quality/price ratio among european countries. The Garnacha/Sirah wine is good? Doesnt the Syrah character overpower the Garnacha?

Hi Bob thanks for the recommendations. Out of curiosity what are your thoughts on wine deals from Grocery Outlet Bargain Market? In my opinion, its a bit of a treasure hunt with a few gems in a sea of mediocrity. Since the wines vary from location to location much more than TJ's, I know its hard to make specific wine recommendations that viewers can easily buy. But still, maybe this could be content in an future video?

Hi Jonathan, it’s good to hear from you. I’ve found some great gems from GO. You’re right, it’s tough to do a video on them because the inventory does vary a lot. I could maybe work it into a best values video across many retailers.

@@winesoup6907 Thanks for joining in! As for Grocery Outlet, much of what they carry are close outs. Some can be very good, others not so much. While the storage is unknown, vintage can be a good indicator of the condition of the wine. Look for more current vintages, that will increase your odds of being satisfied. They will soon have a couple of reds from Nova Vita. Worthwhile amd it should be very inexpensive.
