Master of Wine, Tastes Through the Best Kirkland Values

In today’s video, Bob Paulinski, Master of Wine reviews the latest range of Kirkland wines from Costco. For the video, the wines were picked up at a Costco in Northern California (Concord, CA). Some Kirkland labels are available broadly on a fairly consistent basis, others come and go, sometimes selling out rather quickly. I picked all that I could find, which amounted to 13 wines, the top three values will be discussed in the video, the remaining wines are covered below.
#kirkland #costco #winetasting #winetime #masterofwine #bobpaulinski
The offering at your Costco may vary from what I’m finding as well as the pricing, but there should be some overlap on the wine range and the CA pricing provided here will allow for a ballpark range of what you’ll find.
In addition to reviewing the wines, I’ll provide some tips about the product signing that is used for wine and throughout Costco. At the end of this video, links to a couple of previous Kirkland videos will be provided.
1) Must buy, excellent value, worth searching out
2022 Kirkland Cotes de Provence Rose' $7.99
2020 Kirkland Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon $14.99 (2020 in Napa was impacted by wild fires)
2121 Kirkland Chateauneuf du Pape $19.69
2022 Kirkland Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough, New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc 7.49 (reviewed in a previous video, check end screen) $7.49
2021 Kirkland Malbec, Mendoza, Argentina $6.99 (reviewed in a previous video, check end screen)
2) Highly recommended, pick it up if you see it
2021 Kirkland Carneros Pinot Noir $9.99 (I've had much better from Carneros, but for the money, this is solid)
3) Recommended, solid value
Non-Vintage Kirkland Champagne Brut, Champagne, France $19.99 (Champagne at $20 is a rarity, but $20 spent on a sparkler from other places around the world brings better value)
Non-Vintage Kirkland Prosecco, Italy $7.99 (It's exactly what an opening price point Prosecco should be)
Non-Vintage Kirkland Prosecco Rose’, Italy $7.99 (same as above)
4) Meh, so-so, it’s ok in a pinch
2020 Kirkland Chianti Classico Reserva, Tuscany, Italy $8.99 (I had high hopes with this one, but it fell well short of expectations, not as good as the 2019)
2022 Kirkland Moscato d'Asti $7.99, (Not something I typically drink, but for it's type of wine, it has a sweet, cloying, confected character with a bit of CO2, not a classic example from the region)
2021 Kirkland Chardonnay, Sonoma, California $7.99 (price increased by $1 since the last review)
2022 Kirkland Pinot Grigio, Italy $4.99 (Yes it's very cheap, but it's about the thinnest, diluted wine imaginable)
5) Best to avoid
2021 Kirkland Chardonnay, California 1.5 L $8.99 (price increased by $1 since the last review)

Bob, 100% agree with you on the Rosé. I had one recently, paired with Tuna Salad. It was a surprisingly good wine for the price. I have seen the Cabernet but passed on it. I will pick one up on my next visit. The Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a regular on the dinner table.

The CdP is $19.69 in Colorado like California but in my state it's $18.99. I had one bottle already and I agree with you on it. I saw it locally and had to buy another bottle of course! Also the KS 2019 Barolo is coming soon and apparently it's as good as the 2017 vintage according to CostcoWineBlog which gave both vintages a 93. I had a bottle of the 2017 vintage and yeah it's really good so the 2019 is for sure worth looking out for.

Your insight allows me to obtain and enjoy great wine without much effort or guessing (no wasted $$$). Thank you again for sharing your thoughts. How about hitting Trader Joe’s or Aldi next. No idea if there are any Grocery Outlet around you but if so, check them out. They have a wine selection that is clearly dependent on overstocks, small companies dumping the last of their stock so what is there changes A LOT from month to month sometimes day to day, but I have found some truly hidden gems for low prices.

Thank you! Rose can be amazing, but there is a lot of overdone, low quality fruit versions or ones that are stupid pricy like Domain Ott Etoile. I am a fan of many Italian roses too. We do have wine in grocery stores here, so it’s always interesting to here about these. Cheers.

KS wines offer incredible value for money and especially in Taiwan/Asia when wines from classic wine regions are often double or more in price from their point of origin. So far most of the KS wines I've had offer good QPR compared to similarly priced wines from other producers, and an offer to taste and drink wines that one would pay much more for over here. Their Cotes du Rhone Villages is pretty great, ditto their Asolo Prosecco Superiore. The most recent one that impressed me was the K Vine Evergreen Chardonnay from Washington, Charles Smith was involved, so that helped. Their Friuli Pinot Grigio was rather lackluster, but at less that 8 US$ you can't complain. Our "worst" KS experience was their Champagne, yes I wasn't expecting a wow Champagne at the 25 US$ price point. But I was hoping for something decent that would be Champagne-esque, at the least. Sadly it wasn't, it was just bubbles, alcohol and some random fruit notes. I have had amazing Cremants, sparkling wines from Hungary, Italian spumante and other sparkling wines that were much better for less money. I guess not every KS wine can be a hat-trick or a home-run. Great video and content, and with Decanter reviewing their wines they have certainly moved out of the mass market category into the fine wine category. I will check out your other KS wines review videos. Cheers!

Thank you for the detailed comments. I’ve had lent of the KS wines that you’ve listed and o broadly agree with your assessment. For values for the money, the Côtes du Rhône Villages tops my list. A few years ago, they supplier for the Champagne changed and with the change the quality went down. Perhaps they were trying to maintain a price point, but the drop was evident. In the US, the Friuli PG sells for $5. It’s bulk, basic commercial grade wine, but that’s what it should be for tue money. If you see the Gigondas, definitely pick it up. Cheers. 🍷

I had Kirkland Barolo and I'm thinking of going into the French section, but I'm a bit scared of them. I think I had a Pouilly Fumé last year but I'm not sure if it was Kirkland. There's also an Amarone, but I'm not much of a fan of Amarone unless it's really good. I'm curious about the Pinot Grigio, precisely because of the questionable quality you mention. It's also instructive to see when a wine isn't quite working.

Any chance the smoky character in the 2020 cab is smoke taint? Are the fires the reason this producer could purchase fruit cheaply enough to make a $15 retail Napa cab? In any case, seems like you enjoyed it, so ultimately it doesn’t matter!

It could be. I noted the Napa wild fire situation that year in the comment section of the video. It certainly could be a contributing factor. That said, I've had other Napa Cabs from 2020 that are heaped with smoke taint issues.
