I love all versions I've heard so far - German (Die Fäden im der Hand), English (this one) and Polish (Sznurki Wlady). This song is just like a good Disney villain song, so catchy and thrilling no matter what language it is sang in.

Lyrics: In Vienna things get better every day, There are wonders to see While we waltz the night away. Viennese perfection fills the details of our lives Where the future reflects And the past always survives Let us talk of cabbages and kings Not the shadow waiting in the wings… See them dance to my tune Hear them speak the words I say When I bid them to be happy They are happy to obey. See them swagger and strut As I give them back their nerve Observe The master of the strings! There is discontentment out among the young upstarts They're uneasy, restless Or they are only bleeding hearts. Shouldn’t we be careful It’s as if the walls have ears Makes no difference - you see, It’s been this way for years. Let us see what fate tomorrow brings Till we understand the grander scheme of these things. Let them plot, let them plan, Let them think they’re in control. When I bid them to be with me, They are with me heart and soul Let them fret in the end They will get what they deserve To serve The master of the strings!

@@catears2379 I personally, as a German speaker, think that Uwe Krögers portrayal of Graf Tafee is way more frightening as this one, but for other reasons: In this Version, the singer is actually trying to be frightening, but still staying calm. Uwe does not trying is. He displays Graf Taffee as a intelligent mastermind, who doesn't need to threaten someone. He can smile and talk like a nice normal man, but behind his sweet words are not friendliness, but might. In the Master of String song, Rudolf has this nightmare about what Graf Taffee and Franz Joseph are doing every day to him: trying to "sell" their type of leadership to him. Rudolf knows that Graf taffee is a mighty man, a real master of the strings.

This gives major 'Opera Ghost' vibes from The Phantom of the Opera. When the managers were receiving demands from the Opera Ghost, he was pulling all the strings. He was the Shadow lurking in the wings. "shouldn't we be careful? It's as if the walls have ears". Erik (OG) would follow Christine and Raoul in the shadows around the opera. 2:49 Eric (OG) controls the whole opera and they serve him, The Scarlet Death from the masquerade and his Don Juan Triumphant.

While I don't speak German, I do prefer Uwe Kroger's version to this one. The German version seems a bit more... brutal, than the English. I would love to see this play, but so far, other than Broadway, it's only been done in Europe and I think I saw an Asian version as well. I think it would do well here, but not if they changed the lyrics as drastically as they did with this song from the original German.

It's a bit disheartening to hear people hating on this version. I hope it's not because of Michael Lanning's vocals. I think he has such a cool voice, and I think he did the best he could with what he was given. The slow tempo and piano accompaniment are a little disappointing compared to the faster orchestral accompaniment in the German version, but I think maybe this version was just intended to be more "poetic" than the German version. You can tell that the lyrics are a little subtler about Taafe's villainy in this version than the German version. Still, this version has an eerie, dreamlike quality that I appreciate, especially because this scene literally takes place in a nightmare.

Has anyone talked about reviving this? With Wonderland opening in a few weeks, I'd think the want for old Wildhorn will be pretty high. I know this hasn't gotten the play that J&H or Dracula has gotten, but I think it needs some credit. FWIW, I like the English version, but would love to hear it with a sped up tempo, just like the DVD version.

¿No deberíamos tener cuidado?
