Master Gardeners Week 2! It's Soil Week! :: My Master Gardeners Training Experience

“Essentially, all life depends upon the soil… There can be no life without soil and no soil without life; they have evolved together.” -De. Charles E Kellogg, Soil Scientist
Welcome! Week 2 of my Master Gardeners training was a doozy! This week we learned all about the ins and outs of our soil. I’ve never thought so much about soil in my life, but now can really appreciate the goodness that it gives us and our gardens! 🪱Enjoy!

How great! So interesting and gives me so much to consider with my large desert garden. Gravel is fairly essential with large desert gardens (which I dislike, but….) So gravel compaction is REAL….and just part of the gardening process here. I own a hand held pick axe 😂 who knew?

Thank you for the continuing info. You answered my question, already about if you can add too much organic matter. We add homemade compost, and also put mulch on our garden. Relieved to hear we cannot over do it. I knew about not working wet soil, and it is really aconcern here in IL, Spring and Fall rains, with wanting to plant or dig bulbs!

This was really interesting, love hearing the explanation of the leaves coloring. This course is going to be very interesting, glad you mentioned all the reading, honestly not sure I could keep up with it, I'm looking to buy the book tho. Where I live, there's thousands of farm acres around me, the farmer stopped til here some 25-30 yrs ago now. About no dig, if anyone is really interested in learning more, please go watch Charles Dowding's channel, he's in England, no dig gardening 40+ yrs.

Great recap of your class, especially considering how complex the subject was! How long is the actual class? I took a 1/2 day class about soil, and I was absolutely fascinated. There is soooo much to know about soil and the helpful critters that inhabit it. There is a wonderful movie called "The Biggest Little Farm" that follows a couple who purchase a farm that has laid fallow for a long time, and the soil was completely depleted. The long and short of it is that they bring it back to life using biodiversity methods. If you have not seen it, I highly recommend it. If you have healthy soil, you can grow almost anything. 💐

I actually found the discussion about tilling very interesting because I’ve watched a good amount of those guys on KZread and I believed the information they were putting out so I’m pretty much no till myself. But it is nice to hear the info from someone who doesn’t have “skin in the game” so to speak.

I'm way over in Arkansas and start the MG program in Oct. Unfortunately (or fortunately) it is an online program. Good in that I can do it at my pace, bad because I won't be able to interact with an instructor "live". However this may also be good, because I'm likely to disagree frequently, or at least point out "holes" in the information. Such as, with soil. I'd start out with focusing on the life in the soil (or it's lack thereof) being at least as important as all the chemical and physical attributes, as in the end, soil isn't soil, without life. It's just dirt. I'm not interested in doing outdoor hydroponics (commercial ag), But we'll see if I can hold my tongue.

This super helped me understand my trouble with my soil. I have a new build where it was a farmer's field. The developer removed the top soil. I'm left with sand and lots of pine trees. I'm in Northern Minnesota. I'll have to take drastic measures to make anything grow. Ugh
