Before and NOW! :: A Look Back From Where My Garden Started to Where It Is Now!
“A garden is not a place. It’s a journey.” -Monty Don
Welcome! Today I wanted to take a trip down memory lane and show you all my before photos of my garden! We moved into this home in January of 2020, so this garden is about 2 and a half years old. I don’t want to say that these are 'before and after' photos because I don’t think I will every reach the ‘after’ and that is what makes this whole journey so fun! 👩🏼🌾 Enjoy!

Janey, I had to giggle when you were talking about how your bubblegum vistas kick-started your love of gardening because same!! And when I say same, I mean YOUR bubble gum vistas started my love of gardening! I have them out front and center in my front flower bed and in my large planters on either side of the front door. Also, I had to tell you that when I watch your videos I feel like I'm watching a friend. You are such a phenomenal speaker and I just adore everything about your garden! ❤️

Haha Katie that is amazing! I’m so glad I inspired you and sooo glad you’ve got some of your own now! Thank you for taking the time to write such a sweet comment! 💗
Thank you. I really needed to see your video today and didn't know it. I became aware that I was supposed to watch your video because it kept popping up as a "comparison video for me" every time I left KZread and logged back in, at least 5 times today, there ya were. After choosing a video to enjoy your video was right there in the column of "next you should watch"! After the last one I really knew the gig was up! Your video was recommended which is totally bonkers cuz I was watching foot surgery!! I know our feet get tired working in the garden but still!!! I couldn't make sense of it till I watched and you gave me so much I don't know how to thank you! I have become so discouraged that I'm thinking about cementing in the whole yard and painting it green! It was my Grandpa that always said my Grandma would do it in a heartbeat if she could've. Now I see the sense in it. However, your video of then and now really helped. Thank you!

Jeremy I love this comment thank you! Too funny that YT was pushing my video to you but I appreciate you watching! I had foot surgery last year so I’m wondering if YT somehow thought all people who are interested in foot surgery are also interested in gardening? 🤷🏼♀️😆
The diversity of your little sectioned gardens with their now huge sprays work so well together. That's dreams and goals seriously.

It's no wonder your neighbors the are happy you guys moved in. I hear all the time about how it takes some yrs for a garden to look full and lovely, well you just now proved them wrong. The front yard is so lush and lovely already, I bet people think it's been there forever. Great job, I'm guessing there wasn't anything down the side, where you planted your cottage garden.?

Thanks Wende! That is so sweet my friend! 💗 So in the cottage garden there were plumbago shrubs and that was it. I should have put a before pic in but I didn’t want to make the video too long! Have a great weekend!
I agree that once you figure out gardening is a journey it becomes more enjoyable and less a chore. I love all that you have done to your house it doesn’t look like the same house, it looks like a home now. Thank you for the wonderful video to end the week. Have a great weekend.
Lovely, you should be proud of all your hard work.
It's incredible that you've accomplished so much in just 2 years. You are truly talented and inspiring. Thank you for sharing this video, because it's definitely a reminder to all of us that a garden is ever changing and it's okay to replace plants that are not doing it for you for something that you love. 🥰

So Beautiful I love all your nooks and cranies with color. This is what I want to achieve in my back yard. We sized down with a smaller house for our retirement years but gained 1500 sq ft property and a pool. Perfect for us. Planting is taking so much longer than I hoped maybe I'm inpatient lol Thank you for the inspiration. I'm blessed with a little 8yr old grandson who Loves to dig holes. Big Holes lol

I was looking for plant ideas for the northern California and came across your videos. I just think your lovely personality, smile and laugh are a delight to watch. Thanks for all the great ideas. I definitely need ideas for a more shady area that still brings in lots of color. I have a retaining wall and would love to put some thing bright in the area flows over the edge. I’ll keep watching and see if you have anything for your videos.
You are truly a breath of fresh air! I agree with you that a garden is always in motion, at times moving forward and at others maybe not; they say “everything has a season.” Your enthusiasm is very contagious, and your post are genuinely from the heart. Thank you. 😊

I love your attitude about never being done with the gardening. It never ends (sounds like weeding!)! You have really made your yard (front & back) into an incredibly beautiful living area! Congrats on all your work and I look forward to all your work to come!!
Beautiful garden, thanks for sharing your video
I love looking at the journey of my garden and enjoy seeing others as well. I have to tell you, I saw photos of your front yard with the swoop of supertunia bubblegum before I ever saw your channel. I grew up in Davis and my folks still live there and are a few neighborhoods away from yours. My dad saw your yard in his bike ride and was so impressed that he took a picture and sent it to me, knowing my gardening habit. When I saw your yard featured on GA and looked up your channel, I was like, hey! I know that yard, lol! My folks have a similar east facing dry shady area along their front yard as your oak tree garden. I’ve told them that they need to take a look at your garden on their next walk for some inspiration. If you see an older couple studying it, it may be them lol.

Lovely! You should do an espalie star jasmine next!
Had a very successful garden last year but it was a LOT of work, especially bringing in the soil and mixing it all. I want to expand it this year but take it easy. I've got sandy Florida soil, so drainage isn't a problem. I ask myself why I need to create elevated row? If anything, the soil here is a struggle to keep wet. I used soap as a wetting agent. During the drought I fought tooth and nail to keep everything alive. While I got great harvests last year, I did an area where I just tilled the ground, no amendments, fertilized and planted peanuts. I do have drip irrigation. And I got a great peanut harvest. I'm questioning why I don't do the same thing again with other crops like Thai eggplant and okra and long beans? Thinking of tilling 6 inches, putting down ground cloth, spreading a little sulfur to lower our PH, which is high. Fertilize and plant away. Spray copper on leaves to keep the fungus at bay. Any thoughts?
For lavender, every year you need to cut it down to the bottom so that the lower part of the lavender plant does not become woody.

Good morning. I think ones garden will never be done. You hit the nail on the head as you are continually changing and moving plants to different spots as trees will grow and some things will get trimmed and what not so some area will become shady and other parts will become more sunny. One may think there is too many plants in the garden however there is never too many because there may be plants that are not doing well or not at all then one needs to change out. The whole idea is to make sure there is no dirt showing so that no weeds can grow. You should have done a before and now for the cottage garden. That would have been a huge change. Anyways love the video and seeing what you have done has really inspired me for my 2 gardens. And for that a big thank you. Enjoy the rest of your day with Jason and take care.
Very pretty..but did anyone see the hummingbird at around 14:23 behind her to the right? Sooooo cute

Hi Janey 🌺 l loved how your garden has become now .It is beautiful because you are aperson ho loves the beauty of flowers and plants and knows were each plant is in the garden. We always plant and try new plants in our garden, this makes us feel fun and joyful.🌺Have awonderful day 🌻🌺.
Hello again, Janey. I can't get my eyes off your pool. It's 99 degrees here and I have no AC. It looks refreshing. I'm glad you showed the crepe myrtle tree. I bought a small one on clearance and I've been deliberating planting it. I have the large tree variety and it looks like its going far too big for my small yard. Seeing how large yours is and the shade it produces helped me decide against it. Plus, I hadn't thought about the mess. Thanks!
Love the ivy espalier. It's a beautiful vertical focal point for that wall. It was definitely worth waiting two years to get it looking like that.
I never find flowering trees messy. We have a magnolia tree that drops its petals and covers the driveway/garden bed in a sea of pink. It’s beautiful. Once they turn brown just use the blower a quick clean up. I love your beautiful tree. 💚👍

I love before and afters/now videos. What an amazing transformation in such a such a short period of time. You truly have great vision and inspire me for my garden. I agree, that house was meant to be for your family (and your garden). I love your videos, you get right to the point, not a long intro, you're not trying to sell us anything and you're so articulate. I can just sit back and enjoy your garden.
Before and After/Now photos are always fun to compare. I never think about taking photos of what we have done with our backyard (habitat garden) until we have already made the change. You have done an amazing job with your garden in a short amount of time, and I am sure the neighbors love having you in their neighborhood.

This gives me so much hope! We moved into a new home in December and there was virtually ZERO shrubs, flowers, trees. Only lawn! Horrid! So I've been working away planting in lots of perennials. Question: how much trimming or cutting back do you have to do on the ivy espalier to keep it from encroaching on your eaves/roof?

Wow, you've done so much! It's so beautiful-reminds me of Laura's gardens!!
Just now getting to watch you have been up since 6a.m to work again on the yard. I have several questions to ask you , when first moving in did you have a soil testing done to know what soil type you had or did you figure it out yourself, 2. Did you set across the street, or picture what you wanted in you garden I had a picture in my mind when we did ours, 3. I can not quite visualize your growing season, is it 12 months or 6 months or all year, for 9b and for 4 I think you have done very well and it looks beautiful, you have come a long way in a little over 2 years. much better then we did here. For vinca minor I will never ever plant that invasive plant (weed) again. I'm still pulling it every time I weed that flower bed that I'm in it keeps growing back. That again was a nursery suggestion, so you use your instincts or research for buying things is my new mantra that I repeat to my self when I go to get things. Enjoy your/self time because it goes so fast. Stay Safe till the next time. A wonderful job on the yard.
Thank you Janey for your detailed and through images and explanation of your transformation. Your garden has exploded in such ahsort time. Love form sunny Sydney, Australia.

Incredible transformation. I enjoy watching. I've had to change out some of my landscaping. Been in our newly built house for almost 10 years. The landscaping that came with the house left a lot to be desired. So most of that got pulled out. And it's been an ever-changing project ever since. This year especially since we are struggling for water here in this California desert. But we can still have our beauty with less water thirsty landscaping(not giving up my small lawn however, it provides cooling in the afternoon/evening) 😊

You've done an awesome job with making a ho-hum landscape into a beautiful, lush garden! I had no idea you had only been working on it for two years. Impressive! Perhaps the reason the one Limelight hydrangea blooms earlier is that it gets more reflected light from the water in the pool because it's closer to the pool.
