In the novels, Chief has always taken the death of every soldier very hard, and often blames himself for not being able to save them, it's just his indoctrination and conditioning makes it very difficult to fully express himself of his grief and sorrow. Halo 4 and Infinite do a good job at expressing that grief I reckon. Infinite Spoiler ahead: It's also why he goes balls to the walls, straight into the gates of hell to save Brohammer from Escharum when he doesn't really have to put himself at such risk. Chief even finds that recording of Brohammers wife and kid, obviously planted there to try and break Chief, but all that does is steel his resolve even further.

My absolute favorite scene in all of Halo is the composer scene in H4. It shows how loyal and driven chief is and how a once charismatic and courageous Cortana is distraught and fearful and in need consoling from Chief. The dynamic shifted and chief was in a position that he never has found himself in. You see that side of him once again when he consoles the Pilot. Truly a great step in his character.

Ok it's not too late for me to jump in. Thank heavens that time is on my side... kinda. Spoilers: So, ya know how people are rootin' for Jaga? How his body goes invisible and we never really see him 'dead'? Well I pose the same for Griffen. And 343 could easily bring him back (aside from the books or a dlc). Judging by the audio logs, he sustained major injuries from his encounter with Echurem (God I hope I spelled that right), but they didn't kill him. Yes, he was tortured but that should have killed him whilst he was in the machine. Unless he knew Chief was coming (I'm gonna place my bet that he didn't), it was either the machine, will or the fact that his injuries were more minor then what we know/thought. Now, I'm no medical expert, but I do know that he could have eternal bleeding (no evidence, but who gives a rats' ass?), and/or a an open wound (once again we only see that he was bleeding from the nose and mouth(?), so I'm gonna say ta,e ya pick.). But here's the kicker that gives me hope. He could have just passed out. From what I remember, it's the nural link that gives the Spartans' vitals. And that is located in the actual armor. But Griffen was stripped of that (unsure of the armor being the original source of the link. Like I said, I'm running off memory lol). So, running back to the point, he may have just been passed out. Another thing to keep in mind is the fact that his body disappears at some stage. I like to think of as going two ways: 1. Something got to him and well, as nature loves to work, 'disposed of the body', we'll say. 2. He woke up and found a way out. Both can go in a matter of other directions. Now, I'm torn between it being set in stone that he's dead, or not. Like 6, his death meant something. It was a spark off revenge. Something to drive us (the players, Chief), on. That said, he's an extremely interesting character. And his 'death' (I say/wrote that as such because it's a multiple way street) means something. I mean, the moment I saw it, let alone played through that mission gave me a feeling I've missed since Reach. A feeling of dread... and revenge. You want to get back at the split-lips for killing a Spartan. No, multiple. You want to rescue some. You want to get that adrenalin rush! And this mission... boy does it draw me to Keys and The Covenant from CE and 3. It sets ya up with hope. You think you can get there in time, you can save Keys, that you can save Miranda. But you can't. They're scripted to die. And it's this enviable feeling that drives you for and throughout the rest of the game. It was such a nice callback to what Bungi use to do. And it's great to see 343 taking notes. Another thing I like is that Griffen (and basically every other character you meet) didn't feel like a waste of space. I was talking to my brother about the Spartans, ending up on the 4's. And as I said to him, Griffen sells 'em to ya like 343 sells Infinite. Beautifully. The idea of 4's, at first, didn't bother me. But then they were written like a pizza with no cheese. Come to HW2 and finally, 343 has the art of writing Spartans down. At first, when I saw the leaks, I was skeptical. Was this gonna be a shit-show? Was i gonna wanna yeet the disc at a kid down the street? No. The moment you grab an audio log, the moment you hear about these Spartans, you might mistake them for 3's or maybe even a 2. And his V.A was amazing. I can't give the guy enough credit for making Griffen come alive. So for me, my opinion is biased lol. Griffen sits as one of my favourite Spartans, and that's a hard title to earn. He isn't the best, but you can tell he embodies the ideal Spartan 4 formula. A veteran soldier become legendary hero. Hopefully we see more of him in depth. So, what about Griffen's fate? Did he die? Did he survive? Well, like I said, it's a multiple way street. YOU can say he survived, or he died. You can also say that Jaga survived or died. There's proof for both, and it's not just what I covered. For me, I like to say that he made it out. Endured as Spartans do. I guess, like what the fate of many characters is, we'll never really know, but we can always hope. Stay safe, sorry for the rant.

@@AQG_Arts I have to say that you may have a point, since the same could be said with the Infinity, but I feel that 343 is saving the revive card for Locke. And as much as I like the idea that Griffin survived, I think his death could be more useful in the case of finding some other surviving Spartan, taking into account that infinity had more than 400. Also, if you play in cotrol with the vibration activated you can feel its heartbeat weaken to a stop.

@@ChrisSpartan-157 True. I'm gonna be honest with ya, I'm a big sucker for the whole 'sacrifice yourself for ...' as it makes a story worth it. That said, time to cover Locke: We know from audio logs he survived, we also know from game pieces that he met the Banished. But deep down I pray he died. Man, I felt more for Griffen and the other Spartans we see then what I ever felt with Locke... That aside, back to the main focus, humans are known for a very unique ability (not really but hear me out). There are true documentations (i say this because a shit ton are fake) that state that a person can be dead, but also alive. If I had more time I'd dive into it and give you links ect, but unfortunately I live in Aus, and time right now is against me lol. I feel like this is, as I mention, a multiple way valley. He can be dead or alive or whatever. There is lore for all scenarios! That could mean that if enough people want to see more of this character they could. Once again, I'd love to dive into this, but time is a bitch. Stay safe and thanks for actually taking the time to read my stupid attempts at tying things in and up...

The message is that the one thing Chief uses to somehow get past all this is the mission and the outcome of success, The orders engraved in his head give his mind refuge as to him completing the mission will give everyone peace from war and that's enough for him to keep fighting, Note that he always instantly suggests to move forward after someone's death as to him grieving will weather his hope to keep pushing, A clear example is Cortana's death as you see he is fully broken begging to not let her go, He knows the battle is done and he was prepared to die but in the end Cortana's left him to an even worse state . The sad thing is usually whenever a battle is won another one starts. Poor Chief has to prioritize missions over the fallen for everyone's sake
