I’m self taught and I’m finally getting to a place where my art is actually GOOD, so rare I know, right? This is soooo helpful because I’m almost done my art piece and will start the next soon. This is so vital but something I barely touch on since I mainly do portraits floating in backgrounds haha. Thank you sooo much!

Knowing a bit of perspective will also benefit your portraits, given that they're not always just facing the viewer straight ahead and on eye level. I always struggled figuring out the right amount of foreshortening and how much smaller the other eye should appear, for instance. Rigorously constructing a perspective grid really helps with figuring that out. After all, heads are also just boxes with a lot of corners clipped away.

I love the more environment centric tutorials! I'm always grateful for those. I always thought perspective is easier and more enjoyable than anatomy, maybe because it's less error-prone. We don't see fantasy environments every day so we can't tell if something is very off, meanwhile we see humans every day so it's hard to be really accurate with it. And then there's anatomy in perspective.... I have a little unrelated question though if you don't mind; I'm slowly getting used to drawing digitally (I've been drawing with pencils & fineliners all the time) and I wonder should I be resting my hand on the tablet?(non display) I feel really weird compared to hand-free on paper. I assume it could be a matter of getting used to it, but I feel that resting my hand/pinky on the tablet and drawing from the elbow/shoulder is actually way smoother than having it floating. Is one of the options bad for health? I wouldn't want to get a carpal tunnel in the future really..

  • @greyATK

Most tablets block palm inputs, even those with a display. If your drawing tablet is registering your hand in some way, you must have touch controls on (if your device supports it). Otherwise, you should be resting your hand and holding the pen comfortably, the same way you would with pen and paper.

I think the main problem I have with most perspective videos is that they mostly teach showing examples with environments. I wish I could see this being applied to drawing the human figure so I could understand it better. After all, it is said to be a basic skill, so I would to know how to apply it in the main thing I want to draw. I really don't know how to apply it since the body parts are not even facing the same direction, therefore it is hard to apply what is shown where lines vanish towards the predefined vanishing points. Also, drawing with the guidelines make it way easier, however the vanishing points can be beyond the canvas, so it becomes hard to draw, especially on paper.
