Newbie question: why is it that when Lya says "Comment allez-vous", she doesn't voice the "t" at the end of "comment"? I thought that the liaison rule meant that when a word ended with a consonant and the next word began with a vowel or an "h", the consonant was voiced.

"R"s in French have two different sounds, depending upon whether a word begins with it, or it's later in the word. Neither of them sound like the "r" used in English, which is usually produced in the back of the mouth by pulling the tongue back and arching and spreading it in the mouth. For the sound of the French "r" that *begins* a word, try producing the sound far back in your throat, so it sounds less like an "r", and more like a soft gargling noise, as if you were trying to gargle champagne. You should be able to feel that part of your voicebox vibrating. The lips should be relaxed. For an "r", that's *within* a word, the sound is produced a little further forward than the other one. The tongue is first expanded upwards towards the palate, and then when you begin to voice the sound, the tongue is pulled back down in the mouth. The lips should be a bit wider. So, "(R)on - con - t(r)ay."
