Somebody was probably just trying to run up the bids. Understandable to an extent, but foolish. I'd like to think all the viewers/supporters of Leo are good people. Hope this all works out in the end even better than hoped for.

What a stand up gentleman you are sir. Your name gets thrown around on just about every sailing channel on KZread, and for good reason, you and your team have set the bar as far as I am concerned for not only fine craftsmanship in every case but also for your integrity and character. Just…. Wow! Good on you.

Leo, don't look so guilty about some mental health time off from the project, you've done huge stints at the helm managing this work, of course you need some breathing time away. Always blown away with the fit and finish of your woodwork, makes me super envious, but also incredibly happy to see it done so well.

Yes, his fit and finish on camera is great, but how many fit attempts and fine tuning go on off camera? Every woodworker knows those fit attempts and fine tuning times. Still, not over shooting the fit, and getting it right in the end, does take skill, no doubt. Very well done by all the craftsmen and craftswomen involved in this build.

Welcome aboard. I think about the enjoyment that Leo and his team have given me ever week for so long now and I don’t even think about the money. I love being able to contribute to this project and knowing that in a small way I helped make it happen. It is the finest quality TV out there.

Leo, the customs bond you mentioned is simply an insurance policy purchased by you to ensure the government gets paid any duty and import fees they are due if the person importing defaults on payment. The $50K is only the face value of the policy. You can buy an annual import bond (this would cover multiple imports for a full year) for around $400 or pay for a single use import bond for much less. A customs broker should easily be able to help you with this.

I appreciate you trying to help, but this is incorrect when it comes to SOFTWOOD imports from Canada specifically. Believe me, I wouldn't have reached out before doing extensive research, and I have taken advice from multiple professional customs agents and importers. What you say is correct for the vast majority of imports but there are specific duties and anti-dumping laws applied to Canadian SOFTWOODS which require paying a cash bond of 50k (on top of the 20% duty) which will be returned (in part, or in full) when the duty has been fully analysed, which typically takes 6 - 12 years. This is all caused by a long, complicated, ongoing political dispute about Canadian softwood imports - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canada%E2%80%93United_States_softwood_lumber_dispute

Thank you for sharing and educating me on this! While I have been importing goods into the US for many years, I have never imported wood products from Canada. It is sad to see such a restrictive set of rules in place between the US and our friendly neighbors to the north. Wish you the best.

UPDATE; The dinghy has been sold - yay! UPDATE 2; We have found a solution for the timber import - yay! Big thanks to everyone who reached out to help!! (I've now removed the segment of the video asking for help with timber importing, as it is no longer relevant)

100% agree about Pete, he would make a great teacher, his answers to, "what are you doing today Pete?" have gotten super detailed yet still easy to understand to use non boat builder types :)

This is so common with charity auctions. Trolls make fake bids and ruin it for everybody. I have seen other youtubers try this and they end up giving up.

Leo doesn't take any time off in over a year of steady work restoring _Tally Ho,_ and for a vacation he takes a week to still earn money toward the restoration, just doing a different kind of work. The sheer work ethic of the man is... inspirational. If anyone ever deserved to have his every plan funded, it's Leo. There' are certainly none who have worked harder toward their plans.

Leo, keeping to your word to the boat building charity literally brought tears to my eyes. I could tell from your expression and your voice that it really hurt you a bit financially. I will do what I can to help. You have a God given talent as a shipwright, wood worker and sailor. I know your Father and Mother must be extremely proud of you. well done!

People, Leo is not made of money so please do not bid and then go "Woppsy, don't have it". Tally Ho has given so much to us, lets not let her and Leo down.

Leo might be time to get the project an office manager to cover emails purchasing and other office bound tasks. You might find many experienced retired local folk who would be delighted to volunteer for the next year.. Remember your on camera chat about delegation?

Installing the tie rods reminded me of a conversation I just had at the chandlers when I bought 4 silicon bronze bolts for my boat when I commented on the price the chandler said "yes sure gold bars are cheaper but they stretch more than silicon Bronze".

Hi Leo, I've reached out to a few importers on your behalf and I'm hopeful we can get someone to help. Love the great work, I'm from the Bronx so I especially appreciate your donation, so I will do everything I can to help with the importing situation.

Pete is such a great character in this saga. The kind of guy I can see myself having a couple beers with after a long day swinging a hammer.

That is my definition of a True Woodworker. They *know* that the 100 m (300 ft) tall trees do NOT pump water. It "wicks" up through the end-grain!!! This means that any end-grain that is ever in contact with water will immediately wick it into the timber. This causes the timber to swell, and to rot. The True Woodworker knows that the ONLY way to prevent this is to seal the end grain. For 35 years, I have walked past a hand crafted, complex, wooden, fence. Every five years it rots from the ends of the boards where the butt against uprights. The owner became an acquaintance. One day he said he was going to hire someone to replace the fence and I taught a lesson in end wicking. This fourth fence has now lasted 18 years, three times as long as the others, and shows not the slightest sign of decay. All of the end-grain was sealed before assembly.

You went through the Delaware cannal to the Chesapeake!! My brothers farm is right there. The house was built in the 1700s. It’s his families house, original land grant to Augustine Herman who mapped the passage prior to construction. When my brother was remodeling, he exposed an old windowsill that had become plastered over when the moved the dormer. He wanted to restore the original symmetry to the historic house. When he uncovered the old windowsill from the 18th-19th century, the old sill had sailing ships carved into the sill!!! His ancestor , as a boy , had documented the different sailing ships that transit the cannal! There are several different sail configurations. It was such a cool discovery. Imagine a boy in 1823 , boredstaring out the window, watching tall masted ships going by, probably pulled along by donkeys and ropes through the cannal? If I can find a good picture, I will share it.

At 8:49 our elder shipwright says "In hindsight, I should have put the forward end in first" and here we learn the nautical origin of "First and Foremost" meaning build he foremost bulkhead first!

You truly r an amazing person. 👏 to still give to the charity!! Bravo mate!

Gosh, I've missed my regular fix (a week?) of seeing progress on Tally Ho. I can't be the only person who is constantly blown away by both the quality of the workmanship shown by Leo's team and the film output which I reckon puts more than a few professional TV producers to shame. Glorious stuff, thank you Leo. I'm really glad to be one of your Patreons - just wish I could more posìtively solve or otherwise help sort your present issues. Fingers crossed, someone amongst your subscriber base will have a solution.

Pete's gotten so comfortable on camera that he should have is own show. Here's an idea: It would be titled "What Are You Doing?" and the show is Pete travelling around talking to various craftspeople and artisans about, well, what they are doing :) . Also, Leo, you're a stand-up guy for making the donation. In a media world full of outrage and negativity, your channel is a balm on the spirit.

Unfortunately, not the first flake out on a higher profile Ebay auction I've seen. They should really have a better verification program in place to prevent things like this. Very stand up thing of you to cover half of a fraudulent bid to that organization.

I may be restating what everyone already knows, but I am so jazzed by the part at 14:50 or so. Metals are most effective when used in a pulling motion (tension). Woods are most effective in a pushing motion (compression). Those bolts and those wooden members are really dissimilar in their strengths, but they are engineered to use the best of their individual attributes. Sweet.

It'll be paradise to sit in the salon, to look up & see all the disparate parts working together - decking, planking, beams, frames, rivets, bolts & tie rods. Mast & skylight too, of course, but look carefully to find the wedged ends of a few trenails. Freakin' visual symphony.

Woods are actually also most effective in tension (approximately twice as strong as in compression) . But you're right, like in Tally Ho's case, wood is often used as a construction material taking compression forces.

One thing I was wondering about while watching this part, is the strength of the wood around the head of the tie rod. There’s a bunch of half beams on either side that can take compression loads, but only two tie rods. And while the bronze rods have significant tensile strength, I would worry that they are limited by the area under the head to spread that load out across the wood and this would compresses or even splits. Probably there is a rule being applied that gives an adequate head size for rod cross-section.

It's great to see Pete more relaxed when on camera . Glad to hear you are taking some time for yourself .

You've talked about how busy you are, how little time off you've had, the stress from all the run up to the move, etc. so I'm really glad you at least got a few days off for a working holiday. It's so important to take at least a little time. Also, you're really a hell of a guy for donating that money.
