I’m on a mission to rebuild a 1910 English sailing yacht called Tally Ho. Designed by Albert Strange in 1909, she is a well-known and important historic vessel - but after many adventures she was left in a remote port in Oregon to rot for decades, despite some valiant attempts to rescue her. I bought her and moved her to the Olympic Peninsular earlier this year, and am now rebuilding her from the keel up. Eventually I hope to sail her back to the UK.

Tally Ho is truly beautiful, a credit to her designer Albert Strange and all that have supported her journey and laboured to save this important boat from being lost to age and wear. Leo, your skill as a project manager, videographer, evangelist and leader of the highest quality is what has enabled the incredible quality of this amazing boat. Leo, you deserve the accolades. Enjoy!
Leo, I’m so thankful for you and your crew, and I wish you decades of great success! I wanted to add that I’m amazed at the things you (and the Amazing Bearded Bob) have taught me about ropes and knots. I’m incredibly impressed by the work you showed with the lighting knots. Cheers
Don't know where you are going to document Tally Ho, but U.S. Coast Guard Rules say the your screens for sidelights shall be painted matt black (Rules of the Road Annex I section 5.)
By the way, do you plan to participate in Tall Ships Races in Tallinn 2024?
The worth of a big propeller is not measured in money or anything else but safety!
I have to "Diddo" what Rob said below!!
That's a beautiful job on the capstan! :)
Why did you not put the propeller aperture in the dead wood ??
Hit 500,000 subscribers. Rock on.
Why is this blue/green/viridian/cerulean hull so much more satisfying than the previous orange?
As you've restored Tally Ho, and modernized her, this poem has often crossed my mind: “Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back. Always ineffectiveness. Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation) there is one elementary truth, the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then providence moves too. All sorts of things occur that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one’s favor all manner of unforeseen incidents and meeting and material assistance which no [person] could have dreamt would come their way. I have learned a deep respect for one of Goethe’s couplets - “Whatever you can do or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, power and magic in it.” W.H. Murray
I hope you put on a little BB-SEA Duchess of Desire play for the open house.
good on you Bill! great drive!
Remarkable
Was in Port Townsend and had some ferry wait to kill so walked over and found Tally Ho- absolutely gorgeous in person, as if that's a surprise to anyone...
Nicely done, lad!
Love this channel
Perhaps your best video yet. Kudos.
Well done Leo and Co from someone who is doing another rebuild on a much smaller scale... enjoy your new boat!
Ive followed you from Day one, I’ve cutover. Away for a few months, absolutely fantastic work she looks amazing well done to the whole crew everyone behind the scenes to bring her back
Omg, portownsend? My family is from there, I’m going this summer for a two week sail on the Schooner Martha. Maybe I’ll see your boat on the docks! Congrats on one of the most beautiful wooden boats I have ever seen.
For the algorithm
Leo and crew- loved your channel for years. Question. What wifi wind instrament did you get? I need one on my Trimaran docked in Anacortes. thanks
"Wicked good". He must be from New England.
What a cool boat you have Mr. Simpson and how beautiful it is with the sail up again after such a long time! Congratulations! Are you going to live on the boat?
I’m curious about the thread on the main shaft of the capstan. I think I saw, during the rebuild at the machine shop, that the main shaft was replaced. I could be wrong. Did you use the original main shaft or create a new one? The U.K. has British thread standards. Were the original threads the British threads, BSW or BSF, or were they UNC, UNF, or Metric?
Keith Rucker shaped a new shaft to replace the original. IIRC, the threads were an old-standard 12tpi, but were not Wentworth profile.
want your money back?

What a great accomplishment! Well done you guys.
I remember back when you were planning the power plant for Tally Ho that you'd talked about the hybrid system and the feathering the prop. What I recall is that you talked about how the prop would rotate while under sail and that by doing so you could charge the batteries. I thought at the time that the feathering would be controlled by the cockpit so that you decide when the prop would spin to provide charge and when it feather to allow the boat to travel at higher speeds under sail. This prop auto feathers, was it a change in design philosophy or did I not understand the original intent.
The original design intent remains intact. The prop only feathers when it's in forward pitch, the boat is moving forward in the water, & no pwer is being applied to the shaft. When the prop is in reverse pitch, the water pressure of forward movement prevents the blades from feathering.
@@frederickstibbert7389 Yes, I understand how the auto-feathering works, what confuses me is I'm certain Leo said that they could adjust the prop so that it could turn the electric motor under sail to provide charging current to the batteries, or feather it to allow for faster speed under sail. Either that plan has been changed or I misunderstood how Leo explained the hybrid drive.
Congratulations on half a million subscribers!
That was just wonderful Leo, well done for assembling just the right people and finding funding and doing a great job of filming and editing 👌👍👏👏👏
I really can not judge which one is more difficult, hard work or patience. The Tally Ho crew have them both and they work persistently without overlooking any detail while working. You all are amazing. I am glad that the gear ratio problem was solved to your liking by replacing and adjusting the new prop. Leo's explanation of the situation was comforting too because the system will work smoothly and productively.
Bravo !!!
Rewatching a few of these old 'ICU' videos with Tally Ho deep in the 'outpatient physio' phase of her recovery in June of '24. What a difference a few years (and the work and support of a hell of a lot of good people!) has made for the old lady....
I feel like this project is going to go well...
I think there is a book in Leo's future when he finds the time to write it. I'd buy it in a heart beat.
Those mast wedges could double as cricket bats
a shame thatr heart wood was painted
Congratulations on 500,000 subs and the great videos.
Congratulations man! Long journey and she looks really nice !
OK... so, what's the top speed under power guys? And can you ski off it? Cheers from Sydney, AU 🤠
Leo answered that further down in the comments: 8.5 knot (= max hull speed)
Leo, One word of caution. From watching the machining videos, it appears that the bolt heads inside the bottom of the capstan drum may interfere with the power drive gear if the drive gear is extended too high into the drum. Hopefully this was designed with proper clearance in the process, but I don't recall it being mentioned nor tested in the videos.
Congrats on getting the prop sorted, you could hear the difference pre and post adjustments (there was a rhythmic thrum pre-adjustment) so seeing it all come together was awesome!
Leo, have been watching progress on Tally Ho for years with much interest. We were just in Port Townsend and had the opportunity to see the boat in person. Blown away by the quality of workmanship. The videos don’t do it justice. Thanks for amazing video content chronicling the project.
Great episode, you guys (and gals) are amaze-ball BA's! 💙💛
no more stinky socks on the boat! get some proper shoes
By the sounds of it, as soon as the capstan is installed Leo will be taking on provisions and heading to sea. Who will be in the crew and how long will their 1st cruise last.
How beautiful is that good job God bless you happy for you..
