With a new day in beautiful Baghdad upon me, I set out with my friends to have an amazing traditional Iraqi breakfast.
My friends at Bil Weekend had planned an awesome morning for me. We’d be having a traditional dish called bagila bil dihin, which is made from boiled fava beans, bread soaked in the liquid, and topped with eggs. We’d also have kabab tawa!

We went into the kitchen to see how they’re made and then we sat at our table with the bagila bil dihin, bone broth stew, shorbeh (lentil soup), kabab tawa, makhlama, and amba. The bagila bil dihin was to die for. I loved the texture and flavor of the bread, which had been soaked in the fava beans as they boiled.
Adding my David’s Been Here hot sauce added a nice burst of tropical flavor. Meanwhile, the kabab tawa was like a nice meat fritter. I made a little sandwich out of them with some bread, basil, and tomatoes. It was so crispy and refreshing!
The minced lamb, tomatoes, and eggs in the makhlama were tasty, juicy, and fatty. And the amba added a nice sour flavor that I loved. Then, we tried some cucumber and radish pickles and a smoked yogurt drink called kashk! It was smoky, sour, and delicious! There were also some delicious, tender chicken wings.
The owner broke it up for me with the bread and fed me some. It was so delicious and he was so nice!
Outside, we saw some chickens stuffed with tomatoes and onions roasting on a rotisserie. Then, we finished with some Iraqi chai before heading outside to some fish vendors who were gutting some fish.
Next, we hopped in the car. Our next destination was Dur-Kurigalzu, an ancient ruined city that has an enormous, 70-meter-tall ziggurat. It’s 45 minutes west of Baghdad. It dates back over 3400 years in the Neo-Babylonian period. It’s one of the tallest ziggurats in Iraq and was built to be a temple.
We climbed the steps and headed to the top. I learned that it’s made of hay and mud. It’s slowly eroding because of the weather. There are lots of holes that serves as drains for water, but now pigeons live in them!
Next, we saw some homes and some cuneiform etched into the bricks of the walls. It’s the oldest system of writing in the world! Nearby, we headed to one of the four excavated temples on the site, which is dedicated to the god of air and storms. There’s a platform where they used to sacrifice animals to the gods.
There’s more cuneiform etched into the stones on the mud-brick floor outside. They used reeds to etch it into the mud. It’s so impressive, as it’s over 3000 years ago!

GM David: those breakfast meals are something to delight in. The bone soup is very healthy since bone broth is all the craze now. You can't go wrong with any of the things you ate. How about the guy cutting up your food and feeding you like a baby. So nice, made me emotional to see how much he cared. As for the ancient ruins: superb and to see how this place is still standing strong except for the wear and tear as the years go by. Simply amazing. One question though: why do they serve the hot chai in glass cups with no handles? Anyway I am really going to enjoy this series because there is so much to learn about the history in the region. Here's to the next one. BTW, England is leading 2-0. Later gator 🙏🕊️🇹🇹🇨🇦

Well actually we know it's Indian or came to Iraq from India because Iraq doesn't have mango but people said that when they visited India they could not find it and people didn't know what it was when asked so we assumed maybe it's not from there!

Dude, Bagila Dihin, hands down my favorite Iraqi breakfast! So hearty and delicious! I spent years in Iraq during combat. And yes the street food was delightful. I would buy street food on patrols and enjoy it! I loved the people and treasured the food. I hope one day it is stable so as an old man I can visit in peace and enjoy the food and people once again. I sure miss those dates, the best dates in the Middle East!

David, the foods are excellent. The hospitality and welcoming were so authentic and friendly. I thought it was cool when you lit the fire in the middle of the streets😂😂. I love the temple's history and what's even more astonishing Is that it is made out of hay and mud? Impressive!!! The ending of this video was epic, and what a beautiful journey you took us on. Thank you. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🤗🤗❤️❤️

But the fools who cannot lead Iraq to a strong future. There is all this food and they are idiots. How does this happen 😂!
