in 1995 I was in Australia on a working visa and staying with a friend who lived at Tama. A friend of his said that he'd heard i was a fair swimmer and would I like to swim at Bronte. I thought he meant the seapool at Bronte and he said no swim from Tama to Bronte. After a seconds thought and not wanting to invite any lightweight POM jokes I agreed. It was late February and the conditions were almost exactly like this. Got out back of Tama and he took off about 20-30 yards in front of me full bore freestyle, splashing like a loony. Then I was on my own, doing breast stroke so as to not splash, with THAT music going in my mind (you know the music) and absolutely sh&*%$ng myself. Made it to Bronte twenty minutes later and had to time going in with the swells as it had got bigger during the swim. Walked back to Tama shaking like a leaf. I had always wondered if i was being a bit paranoid that day. This video has given me a succinct answer - NO! I agree with the comment further down the page, the Federal government should be sponsoring you guys to do this, especially in light of recent increased shark activity in north NSW and WA.

Do you think that this could be realised on a large scale all over the world? And most importantly...is there anything we can do to help spread this idea? I don't live in Australia or anywhere near a beach, but I would love to see this method catch on. For years, I've been wondering how shark attacks could be prevented without putting up nets everywhere. I think you might have found an awesome solution. So...yeah, if there's anything us 'mainlanders' can do to help this method of shark protection kick off...let us know. Personally, I'd love to get behind this idea.

Nice job, good use of a drone and warning people. I hope at some point you are government funded this should be a must. I wish this was mandatory in Monterey, bay CA there are so many in that bay due to seals and elephant seals there was a fatal attack just a few weeks ago. Experienced surfer too. My dad used to surf in Monterey all the time and surfed over one once it was huge. I won't dip a toe in that bay and judging by this footage good reason not to. Monterey bay's water is murky and cold and harder to spot. Myself and my parents at different times have been chased up the shoreline at Del Monte Beach by seals after beaching chased out of the water by a great white. Four seals have raced out of the water and they will charge if anything is in the way. Last summer my mom and dad (they never believed me until it happened to them) were chased and charged by an elephant seal racing out of the water to safety of the shore. They were chased up a small dune until the seal felt safe to go back in again.

You might get into trouble if you follow my advice so you might want to get permission first, it's an experiment I'd like to see performed, when you spot a Great White with your drone have it set up so it can lower on a reel a waterproof speaker that emits Orca calls, lower the speaker on the beach side of the shark so if it panics it'll head out to sea , I'm not sure it'll respond to the sounds but around the world there are multiple reports of Whites fleeing their regular location due to Orcas showing up, do they take off when they hear the calls or do they have to see the Orcas first ? Drop the speaker in slowly and about 25 metres or more from the shark so it doesn't react to the physical act of putting the speaker in the water

Sharks have been mythologized in our culture as ruthless brutes and hunters, but the truth is humans are way, way more of a threat to sharks than sharks are to us. About 100 million sharks are killed annually, mostly related to "finning" (when the shark fins are sliced off and sold, often for soup). Marketer Joe Chernov wanted to visually express how the amount of shark attacks that kill people in a year stacks up against the number of people attacks that kill sharks. www.popsci.com/science/article/2013-04/shark-attacks-people-versus-people-attacks-sharks-infographic/

They act as if it’s something extraordinary , it’s their home , imagine the shark filming all those idiots in the sea, telling his mates, LOOK all these people, old young etc why do we have it so wrong

They're most likely astonished. It is a massive, beautiful creature. Further, I believe they're filming the shark to protect the surfers. The reality is humans and sharks share the ocean.
And the guy went there to encounter this huge shark with a little motor boat... that’s big of him!
Couldn't do your home a greater service. Great job guys.
Very nice tech 👍
Now we simply mount some armament on the drones and were in business !
WE GET A GREAT BIG BLOKE
Once I was in an airplane taking off leaving the island of Jamaica and I was looking out the window saying goodbye to our vacation spot ... just then I saw about 10 big fish or something in the water that looked just like that.... I thought they were dolphins... but now I think they were great white sharks... yikes 😳😮
Are these guys on the drones attached to the surf livesaving clubs or are they just locals ? They do a great job. I hope they are getting government funding of some sort.
australian accent is so wonderful pervers

It's so beeg🤣
IS that plastics in the water....????
Can you have a paddle boarder on stand by to paddle out next to it so we can get an idea of it's length?
And that they is the reason why I gave up open water swimming
R u bondi lifeguards?
Oceans are dying from too many .
Wasn't that big. Don't know how long the jet ski was, but lets assume the guy piloting is average size 22 inches wide at the shoulders. Shark is only 10 to 12 ft long.
The number of shark attacks, whatever the species, can be greatly reduced, if not avoided all together if drones were implemented at all beaches.
That has to be atleast 2.5 meters. Big shark
Drone over water at 30%.....👀
I'm never swimming in the ocean again. Thx.
Cool dudes. Thanks
Surely this sort of thing backed by government funding and increased deployment would be far more effective, cheap and less detrimental than nets. I can only imagine on some days visibility must make this impossible?
Low battery warning! Lmao.
Awesome work guys, you probably saved lives on this day, absolutely phenomenal footage, thank you so much for sharing 😱😎🦈
Shrimp on a Barbee!
We are going to need a bigger Drone.
Looks like a small minnow really.
We need a bigger boat... 😬
They aren't interested in people they are interested in their food source, they have to com closer into shore for food that's where the fish/ seals are. The habitat in deep sea is over fished🇨🇦🙏🏻✌🏻
The shark is natural to the water-Dear Humans please piss off
If the drone can see it and are advising, why on earth does someone go out on a JetSki to go look at it??
Isn't this where Simon nellis got attacked
Wow!! Sadly this dron could be helped Simon Nellist 4 months ago where a great white shark mauled him in that exacly point
Saying it's massive doesn't mean anything give an estimation of length
Ok I’m looking and looking and I don’t see the damn guy that was ‘about to jump in on top of him’ where the heck is he?!?? Driving me crazy 😜
Now this is what drowns should be used for safety and if this system of drowns in place in every shark infested waters where it’s a proper job for people to watch over and look for these things then shark attacks could reduced to hardly ever happening.
Hey do you think it’s massive I can’t tell.
Have to be mad to dress like a seal in shark country.
❤🏄💜🦈
at's a greet woyte shock mate
Aint they called White Pointers in Australia?
Massive ? hard to get an idea of scale from space.
"She's massive." The massive ones are females.

Just like in texas
4 meters is average is it not? Certainly isn't massive which would be 6 meters. A very big shark would be 5 meters. These guys keep saying gynormous and massive and huge. The shark is average for a great white shark. I mean based on what experts say anyway.
Sence when is a 12 footer ginormous, 😆 lol,now a 5 meter is getting big

Smart to cut the video right after the murder happens.
4 meters is not massive . it's normal size . massive is 6 meters.
4 meters is nothing for a GWS
13 feet is not massive. A good young adult maybe. I'd say the definition of MASSIVE is 16+ feet. Massive should be much different than just adult normal size. But I get it, the need to hype up for personal reasons and gain is the root of the definition.
They don’t bother humans

They don't, but as we all know do mistake us for their prey, mainly seals
This isn’t Tasmania
