H2O! Works a treat on a fire 🔥. Hoses are charged so not understanding why not use them earlier on.

Not trying to second guess the local FD, but they had ladder trucks on scene but it didn't look like they were making an outside attack until pretty late in the fire.

They were doing massive interior attack. Trying to fight it from the outside at the same time endangers the interior attack teams from the water streams and flying debris it creates. I am curious however after it was confirmed all the crews were out of the building what it took so long to Uniate the outside attack.

waited a little long to get water on it hate to say I think it could have been saved was first thing they new it was a attic fire should have got water into where it was coming through the roof first then as it got under control ventilated the roof. Even getting water in those port holes at the top would have majorly helped the situation. speaking from 15 yrs in the fire service.

Failure to put water on the attic fire is a huge error. You are there to subdue the fire, not let it burn. The men had all the hustle of little old ladies having high tea in the drawing room. Walk a ladder off the truck and stand around? Nobody charging hoses? Bust an attic window in, then spend time coaxing the extension around to position so you can bust another window? With no water ready to go? I am not impressed.

@ actually neal I have I served on a department for years cairo illinois and a small town volunteer department and i have ran into burning building in full turn out gear a scba carrying a 2 1/2 in hose. gone to wrecks at 2 am drug dead bodies out of twisted cars and gone to a families house and told them their kid was killed in a wreck.

@ this is what I am getting at right if the fire is on the third floor it is safe to go in and do a interior attack even at the stair well.between 2nd and 3rd floor unless if the roof is already caving in and from what I seen it was still totally intact. But each department has their own risk assessment they do at each fire some dept will go in while other will just do outside attack. But I agree we were not there and don't know the whole story.

Looked very poor to be fair.

The firefighters run around like in a chicken coop. Carrying fire brigade ladders, which are then placed unused at the house, seems to be particularly fun. Nobody seems to know anything about bolt positions to the neighboring part of the house. You put on the respiratory protection with difficulty on site, instead of on the way there. I wonder why they watch for minutes until the fire gets bigger and bigger before they use the water.

You notice every time you break out a window, you get fire blowing out of it a short time later? Study fire dynamics and modern fire behavior. It will change your fire ground strategies quite a bit.

of course you do you are ventilating the structure and the fire is going to follow the air. The best way to save a building is to push the fire back to the direction that it has already burned. Example fire in the back of the house moving torward the front very easy to stop it's advance 1step ventillation fan at front door on and back opened up all heat and smoke and fire is going to be blown back torwards the back where it came from. then do a front a attack to the back fire can't advance in heavy wind blowing it backwards fire will be easier to fight.

My last fire was an attic fire. Thought that went through my mind was, “I have never been so hot and this is my LAST fire!”

I was not on scene don’t what is going on I had questions about the first video now I have ever more. That is a beautiful old house it hurts to watch this video.

I grew up in the south, helping my father split fence rails and cut fire wood and I can truthfully say that at 4:59, that is some of the weakest ax swinging that I have ever seen. Why don't the fire departments have someone teach the firemen how to swing an ax?

My 80 year old mother had to cancel her home insurance due to her Medicare and supplement costing so much, things like this scare me to death, if she has a fire it would be devastating.

Yes, I can see it is the old Dr Allen's house in Linwood. Truly a shame, was a landmark in Linwood. Did some hunting in the woods behind the house back in the day.

I rarely comment on these volunteer FD videos. Check around the 12 minute mark when they are breaking out all the windows. Strange how breaking windows creates an unlimited flow path and spreads fire. The balloon construction on this along with hard to break lathe and plaster was a challenge no doubt. Classic balloon frame construction fire. Straight into the attic. Still, hopefully this FD does some flow path training.

Breaking windows is how you clear smoke from the house so the firefighters inside can see where they are going.

Sad what a beautiful house

It’s like the Ted Mack Original Amateur Hour all over again. Two white helmets on the foreground- one pauses to fluff her pony tail while the fire burns on. Then, one crew walks thru the front door with an attack line- while another crew pounding on back door with a sledge trying to get in: ridiculous lack of coordination. They wait until the AD roof is fully involved before squirting water at it. By then, extension throughout the 3d floor signals total doom for these amateurs. Love how they run around randomly destroying windows-guaranteed lots of air to fuel the fire-no attack line coverages on the B side while they open it up. It’s enough to make a grown man gag and screech. Looks like the NYFD at any Chinese restaurant fire.

Beautiful house. So sad.

A huge contrast exists between Dutch, Swedish and American firefighters. I'll say no more. Very sad and highly poignant to me - this noble home was built five years before my late grandmother was born in the Bay of Islands (NZ) in 1876. It brings home with a jolt, the truism that nothing lasts forever.

I have a question about the ladder on the laddertruck. Why doesn't it has a basket on it? Is it any pros not to have a basket? I have seen US firefighting trucks both with a basket and without. Don`t think i ever seen a laddertruck without a basket here in Sweden. I can see a lot of benefits with a basket. Like if you need to get people dow that can`t walk down by them selves. People that are old, disabled or have passed out and. Also seams a lot safer for the firefighter that you don`t fall off of it. Also with a basket the firefighters can move the ladder/basket themselves. Explain to me =)

Expensive game of shoots and ladders. Possible different outcomes if you reversed it. Maybe more shoots from the hoses and less ladders

Studies have shown that putting water on a fire helps to put it out.

Old house, varnished wood all through, open attic, hard to impossible to control.

at 12:45 you can see the water spraying out the window by one of the 3 fire crews who were fighting the fire from inside the home.

Maybe the views are misleading but it looks like the 'ole gal could be restored, (it did not burn to the ground). What's left of the roof is the key. Could old "knob and tube" wiring be the cause of the fire? Great videography, "sparkywfd". Subscribed !

More than likely the fire was in the walls & up to the attic because the building lacked modern fire stops. Modern buildings have them. Old buildings have balloon construction. As soon as the fire gets to the attic? The building is a goner.

@@johnclyne6350 That's kind of the key here in determining if the house can be saved - how far below the attic area did actual fire damage start or go. If mainly the attic and roof, a good contracting company familiar with older home construction could rebuild the attic/mansard roof structure so that you'd never know it had burned. That would be the easiest part to fix. The smoke and water damage throughout the rest of the house would be another matter altogether. The work and cost to bring the whole house back to pre-fire condition may prove to be too prohibitive for the owners, even with insurance. Guess it will depend on how badly the owners want to restore the historic house. Will be interesting to see what happens...

I read an interesting article about knob and tube wiring awhile back. One thing you do not do if the wiring is still in service is install insulation in areas where the wires run. When this type of wiring was installed it was known to heat up some when in use and purposely run in open spaces where the heat could disperse. The knobs and tubes kept the wiring from making contact with wood structural members. These days, people sometimes start blowing insulation into these spaces to make their old house more energy efficient. Then when the wires heat up there's nowhere for the heat to go except into the surrounding insulation which creates a fire hazard.

A few of them directly dealt with knob and tube wiring and what you shouldn't do with it. Pretty interesting information.

Staircase and by oily rags left in a box on the stairs for the weekend.

This was a really bad effort! No one can be happy with this. So sad in an old beautiful house!

God forbid they would use the ladder truck to apply water to the top floor after breaking open the windows

I was watching this video on my IPAD, and it was devastating to see this beautiful structure burn like it did. When the Fire Department arrived at the scene, they saw the flames were coming from the roof. I feel that they (the firefighters) should have gotten water on the structure first instead of breaking windows, that way the fire wouldn’t have had a chance to spread the way it did. I feel bad for the owners of this house, they must be devastated. This house is well constructed. I also feel too, that the firemen, as soon as they set up their hoses, should put water on the fire right away. That way the structure could be saved. I’m hoping this house could be restored.

What a tragedy to befall the owners of the property. It certainly looks like a heritage building in the area. Foul play must not be ruled out until determined otherwise.

Why wait so long to put water on it?

Possible tanker not at house, no hydrant at house, no pumper far away at hydrant (looks house is build on mountain), someone here say that he hunting in the backyard, looks very rural place. Without a video or map around the place it is not easy to answer.

Right tool for right job was missed. A hydrocortisone cold cut unit. But a great video nevertheless

Love to be the insurance carrier for this claim I would deny the claim make the fire departments pay for it! This fire could have been mitigated had a better fire department shown up!

That would be the insurance company who issued a policy to the painting contractor whose oily rags left on the stairs together with cans of varnish combusted. Had he cleaned up and taken the rags to be disposed properly this house would still be standing. Too bad he wasn't knowledgeable about the heat generated by varnish drying on rags. This is one of many oily rag fires in the area that year one of which led to the loss of someone's life.

At least the deck guns put some serious water on the blaze. Look at all the ladders with no hose going up. A good training film on how not to fight a fire in an old house with hundred-year dry wood. What do you suppose the moisture content of that wood was - 8%? Gotta get water on the wood, soak it, or bye-bye house.

Great video no running around the fire ground only bad part was due to balloon construction they lost the house before they got there

Nope. The fire may have been burning for hours before the 911 call was made. It started on the staircase. No one was home and it was reported by someone who was walking by. I imagine the entire interior was gutted before the first call was made. I counted 3 fire departments that were fighting the fire inside the house before the flames reached the outer walls Ultimately 15 towns sent crews to help. I saw two crew changes of those who were inside. Everyone inside has to be rotated out when their air is running low. Typically interior temperatures reach 1,000 F which also limits the amount of time that firefighters can stay inside. Glad they didn't wait for the fire to burn through all the rooms, walls and ceilings before they began pouring water on the fire.

Look on the bright side, they have never lost a foundation. Kind of reminds me of a monkey and a bowling ball. Glad to see the ladder salesman has set up his displays all around the house.

Ok at the 45 second mark you see a firefighter wearing a hooded sweat shirt under his turnout coat with the hood sticking out trying to put his nomex hood on. Having the hood of the sweat shirt sticking out not safe.

It was a bed and breakfast and restaurant back in the day but most recently it was a private residence.

No water on the roof because the water was being applied to the interior which is where the fire was.

it looked like the first attack knocked the fire down.
