This is the most professional fire video I have ever watched and I have watched many. The camera is steady. The photographer catches all the action and none of the "let's watch the firefighter walk down the street" that so often appears. This was a horrible fire. Basement fires have always intimidated me. I gather there were no fire stops and despite exceptionally competent efforts this was one fire that was going to do damn well what it pleased. I noticed a comment from a New Zealand resident about power shutting off automatically at the pole. That would be nice to have where I live. I live on Long Island in New York and our power company (PSEG) does not take requests for power shut-offs seriously. On the other hand I lived in Spokane, WA and Priest River, ID and those power companies made real haste when we asked for their help. Good job on this video and good job Uxbridge. I was curious about all the blue flame...not sure what that was about.

Seems like I heard the dispatcher saying the power company didn’t “realize how serious the call was. The fire department calls for a utility cutoff and they don’t think it is serious?

Here in Vermont, we can tell dispatch to have the power company "Drop the Grid" for X area, and they'll kill the power to all of that section of town within a couple minutes by remotely shutting it down. Then they'll get someone rolling to kill it on site and allow the other customers to have power again

First of all , great video. Shows how sometimes the cards are stacked against the firefighters. Despite the the injuries , basement fire , structural degrigation and electrical issues it appears to be a very coordinated attack. This is a classic example of a firefighter killer. I hope some of the KZread firefighters can see and learn why situational awareness is so critical to survival. There are plenty of videos out there showing inadequate firefighting that people love to criticize never understanding how fast shit can go sideways. I am just saying , there is a fine line between being careful , ineffective and careless depending on the situation

I live in the Dallas Tx area. We have very few basements here but I can see where a basement fire would be the most difficult to fight. Also we don't have that many cold nights like in the north. Bless and thank all firefighters everywhere.

We've all had those marathon jobs that just don't want to go out. Great effort brothers!

Town house unit across the street from me, a car thought to be in drive went backwards hitting the gas main and meter attached to the front of the house. The car and house caught fire and spread to the adjoining unit. Unfortunately, the gas service was damaged before the shutoff and all firefighters could do was attack the fire on front of the building and aerial on the roof. The utility had to shut off a wide coverage area valve which took 30 minutes to bleed down. Volunteer firefighters did a great job. The 2 severely damaged units were rebuildable and 2 other units with some fire, water and smoke damage got repaired. The car was a total loss. No injuries to residents or firefighters.

In america well, in scranton pa, if a fire is reported or even say a elevator entrapment..police fire and ambulance all respond. Its the new 911 protocols.

Even false alarms get 6 engines 2 ambulances and 3 police cars. I think its ever since there was an emergency fire and only one engine a police responded and the house was totally engulfed and other engines in the city didnt reapond for up to 9 mins.

I never saw the need to go inside basement. Windows all around. Been in those and its a scary place. Dont go if you dont have to.

A very well done video. Extremely exciting to watch. It held your attention to watch those firefighters in the basement during the offensive attack. Thank god no was seriously hurt. Between the gas feed from the basement and the electric outside they were fighting a loosing battle.

As a former gas utility worker i have a little input on this issue. Utilities get a call usually after confirmed fire and at night there are crew trucks on . Service reps are on 24/7 but to dig. They have crews and usually to cover a wide area with few crews. If the crews are busy they can't move until there location is safe and secure. Gas fed house fires are usually homeowners fault. There also hard to make because all pipes are tight and secured. Hanging clothes on gas pipes are a nono but people do it because they don't realize what they are. I personally have encountered in basements no supports holding up pipes and just connections to appliances and pipe threw floor connected to stove. So 1day you take out wet clothes and hang them on pipe big problem biggest issue is homeowners messing with pipes. Not understanding the correct way to do it. This may sound disrespectful but here goes. In a lot of countries stealing gas and electricity are an everyday event. If the gas pressure is low you can make a connection any where without fear of loosing control. In all homes and businesses its low pressure from the regulator on. But new meters have electronics that tell presure drop or position change. Intermediate and high pressure your screwed if you disconnect any piping. On older inside fits, high or inter gas in pipe comes threw foundation and goes up to a regulater to make it low then to meter. Alot of people think they can just disconnect a pipe and add there own pipework b4 the meter. I can't see a meter where the firefighters put out flame at around 6:50. But that was a gas flame probably supplying a connection for a grill. Pipes might break at fittings and connections but not like a piece of wood in the middle. So for flames to shoot out that location and probably other flames in basement. This is highly unusual and people need to understand that the problem is definitely humans fault. In older system usually the lines outside of house are monitored regularly and you don't see it. When an old service is replaced nowadays regulator and meters are outside. The line is usually a type of plastic along with mains. I started to look at fires or booms in areas where they happen. I also tried looking at stores or other stuff for info on residents. Im aware of my states information. Well there is a coalition with the 2 but i started loosing data znd stuff from provider and all I'm trying to do is get info for educational purposes.

Very good video recording, not to be a Monday morning quarterback, but if this was gas fed did they try to secure the gas at the meter? Most departments no longer pull power meters but definitely can attempt to secure the gas at the meter. Basement fire with rapid spread in what appears to be balloon frame construction, maybe a rapid transitional attack made with at least 2 hand lines might have slowed the spread, impossible to say without being there. Situational awareness is critical, once interior crews had fire above them on floor 1 with rapidly changing fire conditions, strategy and tactics should have been evaluated and changed quickly by the IC. This is a great example of how the common residential fire can rapidly change and we all must be vigilant and ready to change with it. I hope the injuries where not serious.

The only problem I have with your size up and attack, is if they had done that and put most of the dude out, with a gas leak, That ups the chance of an explosion due to the gas leak. I’m sorry, the first I heard of anyone saying anything about the gas leak is around 10 minutes into the video, which means they were on scene longer than that. Wasn’t hard to see a fire that has a constant blue flame, which is indicative of a gas fed fire, along with rapid billowing smoke coming out of points of access. Combined with fire fighters way to close to an arcing line, which everyone should know had a great chance of not staying in one place. I’ve seen hot wires jump 15-20 feet when arcing. I’m sorry, may just be me, but I saw a lot of things that spelled disaster. Does no one on this department know how to turn a valve on a home service gas meter? I’m shocked that on a structure fire this department doesn’t have policies to notify all utilities to come shut off service. At the very least, they need someone on the crew to shut off the gas meter, and if the electric meter has a turn off lever, turn it off.

Greg you know what you are talking about. This was a nasty fire a lot could go wrong fast. They did a great job under bad circumstances.

Great job on the video and attack. Here in Texas we can secure all utilities to the house 99.%of the homes here have underground utility and the gas shut off is out front by the road and you can turn it off with your irons

Scary. Looks like live wires cooking off, along with gas-line feeding flames. Seriously dangerous for fire service folks.

Before I read the description I thought this was gas fed because of the telltale color of the flame in the rightmost basement window at the beginning.

It went pretty bad.

Not only should ambulances been on scene. The utility companies should have been notified as soon as they got there. My husband was a firefighter and every time they got a call the ambulance was dispatched also. And they immediately notified the utility companies

I wasn't there so I'm just asking. Why are we sending guys into the basement of a gas fed fire with the first floor heavily involved and the utilities not secured???

I hope no one was seriously injured, Fire fighters don't get enough credit as they put their lives at risk to save others, They are heroes as far as I'm concerned! God bless all of the fire fighters everywhere,.

I must tell you, i really enjoyed hearing you saying such nice about firemen. A little kindness goes a long way, especially when it comes volunteer firemen. I have been a fireman for over 30 years. Good Video! Showed how we have the cards stacked against us when we arrive on scene (1st-Well involved Basement) (2nd-Natural gas Line venting) (3rd-Power line down/arcing). Pretty well run incident accept I would not have put my guys in that basement!

When fire fights back

In situations like this I've seen a lot of departments back off and just try to protect the adjacent structures. These guys made every effort to save this place under the worst circumstances. Great job.l!

I swear, when you watch the flames, you can see the devil laughing. Fires are so wicked.

A gas fed basement fire in a balloon framing house with electrical lines down is a recipe for disaster for effective firefighting.

Basement fires are the most intense of any fires and are difficult to analyze for extinguishment without any problems with safety and the health of the firefighters or victims! I would rather have a 2nd story fully evolved with the roof than a Basement room and contact fire! They are so unpredictable and makes any interior firefighting hazardous! Careful situation assessment is so vital to stay alive, without injuries and/or minimal property devastation! The massive amount of horn blaring is to tell everyone inside to evacuate immediately and go to designated area to get accountability of all personnel! If people are thinking why the firefighters didn't start putting water on that corner it's because there was electrical arcing where the water could or would carry the electricity straight to the firefighters and electrocute the firefighters or put that fire engine which is a lifeline and not a cheap asset! It's great to see the department went to mostly a exterior operations for safety reasons due to the unfortunate circumstances of the fires unpredictability!

Old construction, doubtful any fire stops in wall from basement. Walls just end up being chimneys from basement to attic. Also death trap for firefighters if additional knee walls on top floor. Good call get them out .

Why are these videos so short.

Just so everyone knows, there was 3 oxygen tanks that were in the basement that were mine from when I was a baby. That is also what started the fire to explode. This was my house fire from when I was 9. I am now 18, still here watching this video.

at 9:55 the dispatcher was told to contact the gas company and electric?

Opened up the roof and the whole building refired. Am I wrong?

In New Zealand, with any fire like this, when the electricity earths in the house it blows the "POLE" fuse which cuts power to the whole street. We dont need to wait for the power company to attend to shut off the power.

T and S Auckland , small correction it only cuts the power to the house concerned, that is the great thing about pole fuses, if the transformer goes faulty it can blow the 11Kv fuses and that can shut off a whole street.

Stephen and Tony Auckland The US is MUCH bigger than New Zealand and the infrastructure like utilities vary vastly over the country. Where I live, Houston, TX, all our electric and telecom wires and cables are underground within “newer” (built since the 1970s) residential neighborhoods. BTW. You said “fuse.” Not circuit breaker? This sounds like it would be faster to retrofit older neighborhoods with overhead wires and cables than digging all the trenches under streets and sidewalks.

I get the power lines causing a issue but why didn't they turn the gas off at the meter? That is common practice with my guys. Most of the time the guy doing the 360 shuts it off on his way around....just some food for thought

It's a basement fire that was fully involved and spread to the 1st floor. Why are we inside while the fire burns unchecked above us? This is how firefighters die. This should have been an exterior transitional attack. I would not have let any of my guys in this basement until after the majority of the fire had been knocked down and the situation stabilized. Risk Benefit is just not there.

Heavy fire in the basement of a balloon-framed home will almost always guarantee an eventual defensive fire. Can't fight what you can't see, and it runs from the foundation clear to the rafters in a hidden, unrestricted run....

It is unfortunate than certain tasks are so compartmented that the first responders cannot be allowed to do them. Take the utilities, for example. Gas was leaking--I might say spewing--into the basement, and the electricity was shorting all over the place. (I thought that kind or scenario was only in the movies.) The law probably forbids, on safety grounds, anyone but a plumber or electrician, respectively, from dealing with those utilities, which means waiting for the appropriate utility company to respond. By the time utility gets there, chances are the fire is out and the structure is destroyed. And fire personnel have been in serious danger from both problems. But both utilities can be shut off with minimal risk by fire personnel. City gas can be shut off at the meter using either of two 1/4 turn valves (requiring a tool, admittedly) right at or on the meter, and the firefighters were at the meter when they were in the basement. The electric can be turned off by removing the meter, usually outside the house or by cutting the power line at the house. There is some hazard, I agree, but far less than the hazard of gushing gas and arcing wires. Can't communities allow that kind of safety procedure?

This just baffles me why this is no longer an SOP.... back when I was doing this we had a dedicated man whose only job right off the truck was to pull the meter is it was safe to do so, and then shut off the gas. He left the truck with a pair of those rubber lineman gloves, and a gas wrench. While the crew were pulling hose and setting up, the gas man as we called him, would do his thing backed up by IC doing his walk around evaluation. Worked well for us.....maybe in this case the meter was in the basement?

In mass u have low, inter med, and high pres that could b in buildings . That does not look like low pres. . Thet did one heck of a job. Gas Utilities have service reps on 24/7 but if u need str crew they are called in. I would love to know the cause. Great job Uxbridge fd

They are pass alarms on each firefighter if you don't move for 60 seconds it goes off and has a bright strobe lights so we can find a downed man/ woman firefighter

Its the most annoying sound and the most sad sound when it's going off for the reason it is made for.. I had nightmares for weeks after hearing them going off for days at ground zero and then it hit us that no one was getting found alive when they all stopped chirping

I can tell the gas lines exploding in the home, causing the fire to spread up.

I wish Fire Depts were able to aquire long fiberglass cutters so they could cut the 240v lines to a house up by the pole to stop the danger when fire starts melting the lines. I understand how much could go wrong though but in certain situations it seems safer than trying to work around it.

Great Video and I hope the fireman that we’re hurt come out well I’m not playing armchair QB here but a medic unit should have been on scene the attack looked good and command did a good job going to defense once things got out of hand

Well, it’s not fair to blame them because this happened partly because their hoses were only A.W.S.T.X.O. certified and the secondary fire propagation had looped back around from the front of the house again, creating a “bow echo” feature in the flow path. Ordinary hoses would only speed up the fire spread in this case, due to the high levels C.P.V. materials in the other available hose lines. So, they really didn’t do anything wrong here by only using 1 hose. What would you have done differently?

Why wasn't gas and power cut off prior to sending men inside a coffin? Notifying gas and power after several ended up in an ambulance is incompetent at best. This is disturbing😠

Basement fires are a bitch.. was 1st line in on sub basement on a cocktail lounge.. all booze was keep cool in the sub.. 2 440 panels in same room as stored whiskey, guns rums .. over 500 gallons were stored in sub basement that was hot

Why do house fires have to be so damn mean? If I were a house fire, I wouldn’t be mean; I’d only be nice and polite, and be like “Hey man, you wanna hang out?”. I wouldn’t destroy people’s homes or kill them either.

On transmission of working fire in my county we automatically get power company for a cut. We also would’ve got to meter to cut it ourselves. Line in basement line 1st floor with multiple guys with hooks and we are done. Let the gas fire burn til gas company gets there. Knocking down any extension every so often. I guess shitty conditions but not impossible

Why is it, every fire there is no electric and gas company workers there when the police and\or fire department arrives on scene. Every home and business should have a shut off some place on or around the home or business so the fire department can shut them off if necessary. These company's should have at least 4 guys on call at any time.. People should start complaining more about this. Might save their homes and businesses more.

Power guy shuts down electric with pruning loppers? That's third world tech, lol.
