    Outstanding video Adam. According to WCBS news reports the fire was in fact started by careless smoking. The news report also stated that investigators discovered an illegal gas pluming line hooked up to a stove in a section of the attic which was converted into a kitchen in a neighboring building as the camera focussed on the heavily damaged building on the left side which was originally exposure #2.

    Great camera work! Frustrated by the firefighting tactics. The deck gun was just wasted. Wet wood will NOT burn, so it's obvious the water wasn't actually reaching the wood structure inside the attic. I heard what Chief said, and understand it. It was hard to find what was burning.

    It's funny, when the flames are visible you don't even think about the cold, you are focused on fighting the fire. As soon as the fire is out you all of a sudden realize how freaking cold you are...

    It's fair to assume that Fire Regulations for US homes don't require a firewall between two properties then.

    I read comments on American firefighting tactics and also how the buildings and locations of them. Well you can not compare the US to other countries then. Also in a fire like this if the fire gets ambers into the framing its trouble. Alot of older buildings have camelhair plaster. That means small 1"× 1/4" slats running from floor to ceiling then plaster is put over it. All these slats are old and dry as hell. They are also rough cut meaning they have burrs all over them. Thats like fine dry wood. Ambers get into walls and it takes a while for it to start burning. It smolders for a while then boom

    Love your videos but a few I hope are used in how not to arrive and fight a fire ! Seems just 1 hose used in internal fight and 2 might have made a difference in splitting up and fighting from 2 sides. Deck gun took forever too and I thought 2nd exposure building was going to go up too !

    According to the Chief in the on camera interview the main body of fire was inside the voids in the structure and the firefighters had to dig it out to put it out..

    The problem is you guys often turn up and start trying vent before you have any lines ready to fight the fire and all you end up doing is feeding the fire.

  • @LoudlabsNYC

    Andy Oxley this is interesting “ Ventilation is a part of structural firefighting tactics, and involves the expulsion of heat and smoke from a burning building, permitting the firefighters to more easily and safely find trapped individuals and attack the fire. If a large fire is not properly ventilated, not only will it be much harder to fight, but it could also build up enough poorly burned smoke to create a smoke explosion or enough heat to create a flashover. Contrarily, poorly placed or timed ventilation may increase the fire's air supply, causing it to grow and spread rapidly. The flashover may cause the temperature inside the building to peak at over 1,000 °C (1,830 °F).[1]” - Wikipedia

    @@LoudlabsNYC You obviously didn't read my post or understand. My point was you guys often turn up and start venting straight away without any water to fight the fire. If you turn up and just start venting yes you can release flammable gases reduce heat and improve visibility but you also need a crew with a charged hotline to be ready to fight the fire straight away. If you don't start fighting the for as soon as you vent you are just adding more fuel to help the fire spread.

    @@andyoxleyonhistravels Andy we're not disagreeing with you. What we did do is read up on ventilating and what we read was quite educational. Good point for bringing that up though. Perhaps a FDNY member who was there could explain what happened.

    MAGGY FDNY likes to play the big tough guy roles. Its common for the senior guys to mock the junior guys who are masked up. It’s some sorta macho culture thing there. They’re not gonna be so tough and macho when they’ve fried their lungs with cancer or COPD in the long run.

  • @edburton6472

    @edburton6472

    Its not that the places are made of plastic, the problem is REALLY old fashioned buildings with that cursed vinyl siding slapped on to make them "pretty!" the building was obviously a "balloon frame" construct with the fire in all the void spaces (listen to what the Deputy Chief had to say then go online and look up "balloon frame building construction" for more info) with NO firestops applied when it was built! These firemen had their work cut out right from the git-go on this one!
