--SMPOST--What the shuck!? So I managed to scoop some drives super cheap lately, and have 'shucked' them for my new QNAP Nas, which I'm in the process of migrating all my video data to this weekend. Quick video about what shucking is, and which drive I bought.

Before I heard of anyone doing this... I bought an HDD at the local office supply store. I asked the salesman if he thought it was possible. He said he wouldn't try it. I did it, it worked, I was very happy with myself having saved a little money.

i've had a few usb drives over the years that died. i opened 'em up, put the hdds in a pc and carried on using them. i never knew it was called shucking until an american mate told me about a year ago.

I used to do this with both 3.5 & 2.5" drives. However, last time I attempted it on a 2.5" Drive I got burned Western Digital soldered the USB 3.0 Port where the sata port was. Just sharing that experience.

Jeez! That's like $1500 worth of storage 😂 I remember in the early days of the PS4, people were buying the older 4TB Seagate Backup Plus external hdd's because they contained 2 2TB Seagate Blue drives, which at the time were among the only 2TB drives that were compatible for PS4 internal storage and weren't soldered to a sata to usb adapter or contained proprietary firmware linking them to said adapter. Fun times! They can still be purchased on Amazon (the one with the silver logo in the corner of the drive), but the price went up big time as they're now discontinued and Seagate probably caught on to what people were doing. The single drives are prob a cheaper way to go now too.

Is there a difference between the 16 TB Seagate expansion - STEB16000402 and STEB16000400 ? Here in India, the former is priced almost the same as the internal Exos drive and the latter is almost half the price. So I was wondering if you or anyone knew what kind of internal drive can be expected from shucking the STEB16000400 drives.

I don’t know if this was the case 2 years ago, but it certainly isn’t anymore. At least not in Sweden. The external drive with the encasing and power supply is 100-150 dollars more, as it should be.

Not sure if its due to chia coin and or genral inflation/hardware shortages, but as of now the individual drive is actually cheaper than the external one on amazon. I also relize this video is over a year old for anyone about to comment that. I just thought it was interesting.

as far as i know its still a reliable HDD but its a EXOS that doesnt live up to the standards of normal EXOS and therefor are thrown into those units but they should still last a LONG time even in 24/7 usage and if youre just running a plex server or some backups here and there then this drive should last way longer than the warranty and should in general just be super good still

You know shucking probably voids the warranty, and in this case, upon checking the warranty status of the drives in the video (which the serials are not blurred), they no longer have a warranty status. Buyers Beware.

Can't wait for the HDD industry to die off or migrate or focus more on SSDs so everyone can have M.2 for a competitive price :)) Never gonna give that ~400MB/s up. (And NVMe gets CONSIDERABLY faster)

Cost cannot be "cheaper". It can only be "lower" (or "higher"). Products can be "cheaper".
