⚓️Massive 1000-Foot Ship Pierces Through Rainstorm in Duluth!

Ойын-сауық

Boat Friends,
Welcome to a groundbreaking moment on my channel with the premiere of “Massive 1000-Foot Ship Pierces Through Rainstorm in Duluth!” Recorded on May 2, 2024, this video captures my first encounter filming the remarkable Presque Isle. This vessel isn’t just any ship; it’s an integrated tug barge (ITB), blending the robust functionality of a tug with the significant cargo capacity of a barge.
Experience the Presque Isle’s majestic approach to Duluth as it maneuvers to load iron ore at the CN 6 dock. The overcast and rainy conditions create a dramatic backdrop, perfectly highlighting the ship’s formidable presence as it passes under the iconic Aerial Lift Bridge. This moment is marked by a thrilling exchange of horn blasts-a salute between the ship and the bridge that resonates as a welcome amidst the storm.
Filmed primarily from the North Pier, this video not only showcases the ship’s impressive entry but also captures the vibrant local wildlife and the dynamic interplay of nature around the Great Lakes during inclement weather. Additional content includes exclusive photographs from a Boat Friend, adding a personal touch to this video.
This video is a must-watch for enthusiasts and newcomers alike, offering a rare glimpse into the intricate world of maritime operations and the natural beauty of Duluth’s port.

One correction, Chuck let me know: The tug/barge Presque Isle was designed as an integrated tug/barge unit (ITB), with the tug fitting into a specially-designed notch where it would rigidly lock in, and the pair would sail as one vessel. She doesn't articulate with a hinge. It’s an ITB not ATB. That’s the fun of watching ships, we get to learn every day about these beautiful machines.

Both ITBs and ATBs certainly are neat.....and a bit confusing to say the least. But you clearly stated the differences. Originally the Presque Isle owner thought money could be saved by using less crew members compared to a regular laker. But unfortunately for them, the Coast Guard felt differently......classifying the ship more like a traditional freighter. Opps, no money saved with respects to crew. Oh well. She is a really cool ship! It's been a most successful ship over the many years of her service.

@@vibewithmike Gosh Mike, I've learned so much from this channel. I generally read every comment. Without question, I've learned much more from other's comments, than what I've shared. There is that much great information out there that your Boat Frirends have shared with the group. I encourage efveryone to comment and share. Chances are good, someone will find what you post very informative and useful. Thanks a bunch for braving the wet weather. It's a interesting contrast to the nice sunny blue sky day! Oh forgot to mention something. I recall seeing the Presque Isle out on Lake Huron in 1973 boating with my family. I was 17 years old. The previous year, I got to see the Steward Cort.....the first 1,000 footer.

That explains something I was wondering. The Presque Isle has it's name on both the tug and the barge. Which isn't the case on most ATB the name is normally on just the tug. Least if I remember it right from a Tug skipper I use to know down New Orleans way. Another great one Mike.

I come from a commercial fishing family originally from Norway but Oregon for the last 5 generations. I fished the west coast from California to alaska. I stopped fishing commercially after getting married .Recently I moved to Pennsylvania and the only time I have seen the great lakes so far was on the Presque isle Peninsula. I only really knew about the Fits of course. I have immersed my self in great lakes shipping history .I really enjoy your videos.

I would really like to get some views of it loading with my boat, but the weather was really bad where I couldn’t get out there in the lake obviously. What an enormous vessel; the sheer size of it is astounding! It must take a great deal of skill to maneuver something of that length- and through water, besides. A neighbor with a smaller pleasure boat told me that it is far harder to control a boat than a car, as the force of the water must be contended with. Makes sense… I do not really have a maritime background, but I am interested in these ships and the lakes, and I learn things as I go along. I’m sure you were glad that you finally got to film this ship! :)

Hi Mike and boat friends ! Just catching up ! Another awsome video ! The concept if a separate power plant is they can have additional cargo hulls to push in the future While one cargo hull is being loaded or laid up they can detach from the one cargo hull and hook on to the other Much like the tugs and barges on the Mississippi There is probably good fendering between the front and aft sections that compensate for the vertical differences in motion between the front and aft sections going thru the swells out on the lake unless there are giant hydraulic clamps and they are mechanical locked together Since they were built separate at the start there might be a sister cargo hull in the future Good horn blast Have a great day !

How interesting is it that they have two of these things connected together and it makes 1000 feet. That tug is extremely powerful to be pushing at big barge. I wonder how the crew quarters are though? Some of those bigger thousand footers have much more room to move around if you’re a crew on board.

Duluth seems super cold and wet bro! I did not know there was a thousand footer than was an articulated barge... That really is something! The seagulls seem to be having a good time haha! Check out the shields on the ships rails I recognize some of the symbols on the shields. The white one has a vegvisir on it and the black one a valknut. Interesting... Never seen that on a lake ship either. That must make the crew Icelandic or Norwegian in heritage or nationality. Thank you for braving the weather Mike! Appreciate you taking the time to share! 🌧🌧🌧

Also, the barge has a bow impeller. Is it powered by the tug or does the barge have its own power plant? I guess I need to do some research. It was nice to see a new ship come into Duluth. @@vibewithmike Yes. The first time we went to Two Harbors the cook would not feed us, said we were too dirty to come inside his galley. So our foreman took us into town and fed us at a local restaurant and then gave the bill to the ship's captain. On the next trip the cook gave us only sandwiches on white bread no mustard or mayo. The captain heard about that also. On the next trip we were fed in the galley but we had to take our overhauls off outside and of course was up thoroughly. The cook was still not happy. It was customary with any ship that if we worked past our normal quiting time that the ship fed us, after the crew of course. When we went to Two Harbors we usually worked until about 1 or 2 AM. Hey Mike, and all the Global Boat Friend Nation, from a drying out Bismarck finally with little or no wind. Missed the live feed, but had to watch this nice video again Mike, unique vessel which is one of the first Kfooters. I remember this vessel from when I lived in Dtown, as she was a very busy ship with a strong horn as well. Interesting configuration and I wonder if the articulation kind of like how a 4-wheel drive farm tractor is constructed makes it harder to control than a conventional Kfooter. Maybe ChuckG would have some info on that as you would think it might be a little different for sure. Mike, did you see my guesses at the end of our string from the last vessel. I bet it’s somewhat complicated. “Tim B at Sea” has a video specifically discussing this with a captain of an A or I TB configuration. Chuck has it right: there are two different connection configurations: ATB and ITB. As I understand it, the ATB’s are more often broken up with the Tug moving on with the Barge remaining in port. While the ITB’s are pretty much stuck together (more thoroughly integrated)for much longer times. Cool stuff for sure! THANKS!!!

I hope the weather is fantastic when you arrive! Here are the three tools that I use to determine when the ships will be arriving or departing in Duluth. Keep in mind, there is no sure thing because of weather, speed of loading/unloading, etc. However, if you use all three of these together, it’ll really help you know what’s going on. Here are those three tools. #1 This spreadsheet is maintained by people that are keeping their eye on the ships on the lakes, it’s pretty accurate. However, it all depends on when it gets updated, which typically is many times throughout the day. I use this one the most. docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/e/2PACX-1vSteOg5IAWJEkJm3NaLDqK3PqSUz_CBxNGUZSQsw_HS1hHqqJKTZHvuytYd9V5ndCEn7ZivM7IpPwrl/pubhtml?gid=0&single=true #2 This is updated by Duluth Harbor Cams, this one can be accurate too, however, it’s all about when it gets updated as well. They do a good job. harborlookout.com/ships#0 #3 This will help you determine exactly where the ship is in live time. It’s extremely accurate. The app I use is called “MarineTraffic” and it has a blue ship for the logo. You will really enjoy it! You can research vessel names and follow ships all over the world. You can download it on your Android or Apple phone.

Excellent question. The Aerial Lift Bridge goes up early to ensure there are no mechanical issues, the worry is what if a ship is close to the bridge and it stops going up because of an issue? These huge ships take a long time to stop. The ship could crash into it. It’s a incident prevention measure essentially. 👍⛴️

At 2:13 it shows the Army Corp Engineers phone tour. Apparently you can do a walking tour and listen to details of each stop. Maybe sometime Mike can do that tour. I'd be interested to learn how it went.

Sorry, I have not had my coffee! The cell phone TOUR, not Tower. Silly me!🤭 Yes, there is a tour that as you walk around the museum and Canal Park you can call at each station and it’ll give you information about what you were seeing and things about that. Take a look at this link, look at the historical tour section. www.lsmma.com/content.aspx?page_id=22&club_id=605134&module_id=308440#:~:text=historic%20tour&text=Best%20of%20all%2C%20the%20tour,just%20dial%20218%20213%2D9069.
