In the first days of the Stars of the White Nights festival, the performance of Carmen on 23 May 2010 drew particular public interest. The opera was conducted by Tugan Sokhiev. The role of Carmen was performed by Natalia Yevstafieva, that of Jose by Massimo Giordano who was making his Mariinsky Theatre debut and that of Micaela by Anna Netrebko.
