Nice video, but I'm going to have to disagree. The standout is the soundstage. I do agree about the lack of extension, but the soundstage is really incredible. Also comfort is is a big factor, and these were the most comfortable headphones I've ever tried. No issed with shallow cups (I guess I have small ears) or uncomfortable band, which is genuine leather btw.

I completely agree with you. I love these for general purposes on my computer (from gaming to watching movies and videos). They are SUPER comfortable, and their sound signature is very non-fatiguing! I do enjoy them with music, but I'd rather reach for another headphone for that (perhaps my isine 10 or my 6xx when they arrive lol)

I just got my 7XX a week ago. It's a $154 (after tax and shipping) second-hand open-box one I got from eBay. The headphone is really light and the clamp is looser than my other headphones, so it doesn't feel as solid as many other headphones, but it's REALLY comfortable. I'm loving it so far. I have a pair of 58X's and I really like the 7XX compared to the 58X. Not saying the Senn's are bad, but I prefer the extra soundstage that 7XX gives me. I listen to a lot of orchestral and the narrow soundstage on the 58X isn't really helping with creating the feeling of being in a large orchestra hall. I also feel that the 7XX are slightly more resolving on instruments, probably because of the slightly crispier highs. I think the 58X and 7XX are fairly on par: neutral sound signatures with good resolution at a low-ish price range. If they are at the same price, I'd take the 7XX over the 58X for its soundstage. However, I don't think they are worth MSRP $200, more like $170. I guess I'm a boring man listening to a boring headphone, but I actually like this sound signature as a daily driver baseline and flesh out my collection with specialty headphones down the road.

Funnily enough I was listening to these and saw this upload-watched the review on K7XX. Love your reviews, but somewhat disagree with you. True they don't really have a standout factor like being super relaxed, but they're pretty darn neutral and have a nice soundstage, IMO. To me, where these cans sound best is listening to very well mixed and mastered tracks. I don't know what your musical leanings are, but K7XX sounds good to me on albums like the recently remastered version of Red by King Crimson or the La La Land soundtrack. True these sound great on other headphones and may sound more fun on those, but I like to cycle through the couple of cans I have. Keeps my library sounding fresh, but maybe that's just me.

Yeah but not every headphone can reproduce detail, clarity, and accuracy in the same way. I find the K7XX is pretty competent in bringing out detail, although as in this review, the bass isn't the best.

  • @Ilost11

The reason why DMS3 doesn't like them is because he has a tendency towards dark sounding headphones which is most clearly indicated in his headphone of choice the HD650 or his praise for planars, this also makes sense given the music I assume he listens to based on what he has sampled here and there in videos. The AKGs are quite the opposite and are considered bright with what some say is exaggerated sound stage with what is slight better than a mediocre build. From personal experience I prefer the both the HD600 and AKG7XX over the HD650, but this is all up to personal taste.

Funny, I actually tried my friend's hd650, I found some highs and vocals to be too forward or too strong. Despite hearing significantly more detail than my k7xx, I think I prefer my k7xx. I ordered the 6xx just to be sure, so I'll see what I think when I'm able to A/B for a longer period of time

I never heard them and I had the feeling that the sound is pretty much boring... Now The Fostex TH-X00 are my favorites full side headphones, and I had the th900 mrk2 (amaziniiiig but the highs are too much for my taste), HD650, DT770, HE400i, DT90 and HD598cs. The bass on the Fostex and image is so good! I guess is my favorite sound signature considering that the SE-846 are my diary drivers and the bass in both is SUPREME!! I have the mahogany btw, that I heard has not the same sound of the ebony and purple, I can't wait to see what you have to say about these!

As for the ear-touching the inside of the headphone, I`m certain that the Slovakian version of K712pro that I`m using has the same problem. Seems K7xx has almost the same design as K712pro too. Still thinking of return it and buy a K812 instead, but I didn`t see saying of any substantial improvement in sound from most of reviews. And K812 is much heavier.

Coming back to this video after 6 years, I'm forever in the search for my favourite headphone, and have had my K7XX for almost 10yrs now, it's still the most comfortable headphone I've ever worn, headband excluded, the pads just feel like pillows. Interesting that you mention the pads are stiff and your ears touch the driver, as someone with ears that poke out, I find them touching the driver isn't a problem, and compared to the HD660 (which I'm wearing right now), the pads feel much softer, compared to the HD560S, same thing, and more so because that notch in the HD560S is the most annoying thing on any headphone I own. The reason I'm browsing YT looking for video's on these old headphones is because my pads are starting to show their age, but the rest of my K7XX is still in good shape, do I buy myself some K712 pads at the steep price of 48Euro a piece, or just buy a set of K712 cans at around 200Euro. I use my headphones for different purposes, but my K7XX have been my go-to gaming headphones I use while on the couch ever since I bought them, so looking to keep the legacy going.

I bought the 7xx last Oct and were delivered about a month later. These are the Q701 with the Annie pads, which are on the 712pro headphones. Nothing wrong with my headphones as far a built. They are much better built then the M1060. The 7xx can be driven using my phone and sounded good right out of the box. They will sound better with a amp, most headphones do. The price on Amazon for the q701's are $248.00 Prime. Add another $40 for the Annie's if you buy from AKG. $18.00 if bought on eBay. There is another review on the q701's done by metal571. The 7xx have a 2 decibel bump on the bass vs the 701's, making them the same as the q701, but with much better earpads. The older 7xx's were the the same as the 702's, just a lot cheaper because of Massdrop. Hope this helps someone.

This what Massdrop is saying . See if they agree me or not. Any other questions or comments you have, take it up with AKG. our first custom headphones ever, the Massdrop x AKG K7XX have been an enduring community favorite since they first launched more than two years ago. Since then, they’ve received praise from Head-Fi, Super Best Audio Friends, Z Reviews, and more for offering a rare value in the world of open-back cans. Inspired by the legendary AKG K702 65th-anniversary edition, this rendition features the same dynamic driver technology and superior build quality-plus a few updates in the sound and comfort departments. These headphones have been tweaked to deliver an extended frequency response and a wide, locationally specific soundstage that puts you closer to the source than most cans. The highs were boosted by an innovative flat-wire voice coil, the mids were brought up to better balance the range, and the lows were jacked up by 3 dB for fully immersive sound imaging. To make sure the channels are synced up and well balanced, each transducer is individually tested and paired to a transducer with the closest possible sound signature. To see how well the channels match, look at the below graph featuring an overlay of each driver's frequency response.

From AKG? Look on ebay for any 600 ohm model. Those are from the era before AKG was sold to Harman Kardon and ordered to mass produce popular, cheaper, easer to drive headphones at the cost of sound quality. Last remnant of old AKG (but with new low impedance drivers) are K121, K141 or K240. K700 series is basically refreshed K601 first headphones created under Herman Kardon ownership. Anybody that had opportunity to compeer K501 last headphone done by AKG to K601 first headphone done by AKG by Herman Kardon (that was full name up to last year, now AKG was sold to Samsung, engineers fired, engineering bureau in Austria closed there is no more AKG from my point of view) tells that K601 is junk.

When you put the headphones on, you put them on backward with the thick side of the earpads facing forward. It should be the thin side that faces forward. This could be why your ears was touching the drivers, and the sound signature and soundstage would be off.

As far as the built? Same as all AKG built. Much better built then the Mono 1060. Its a fun sounding headphones. As far as the price vs the Quincy’s? Quincys are going for $339.00 on Amazon. I’d say that’s a deal. Massdrop has the HiFi Men 4xx for $169. They look like a much better built then the 1060 and are Planar Magnetic.

I had the exact same story with the k712, my right ear hated it at first but now I can wear this headphone for hours easily. It's my first audiophile headphone and you have HAVE to buy some sort of amp or dac. I'm using a smsl sap2 with sanskrit 6th gen and compared to my laptop's audio card, the highs stopped hurting my ears and the bass instantly had more impact. Of course this adds 180-200$ to the price, but if you have no amp or dac, and you are sensitive to treble, you have to do it. The 235+107+67 I paid for this combo was definitely worth the price.

I'm using Lake People G103S as an amp and it's more than enough, but I have fiio Q1 also. Fiio pairs well with listenable volume, it's just not loud enough if you like to listen music at very loud levels. But your E17K has more power than Q1, maybe will be enough for you.

Well, I doubt the soundstage on K7xx is huge. As for the amp, if you don't need dac/amp combo and portable, Fiio K5 would be fine. Otherwise you may look at smsl products also.

Pretty much similar to how I felt about the K7XX. I really liked the comfort of them, but that was about it...they sound so dull and slightly veiled to me, and that was going through a very detailed and resolving DAC with a good SS headphone amp . Was getting them mainly for gaming purposes, and just happened to get the Philips SHP9500 afterwards to compare against - and there was no comparison! I liked everything about the SHP9500 better, other than being slightly less comfortable. The SHP9500 made me immediately sell off the K7XX....they were just not for me, and cost 3x what the 9500's did. I now have the SHP9500 exactly where I want them with Shure 1840 pads (defoamed backing), paper filter for taming the highs, MrSpeakers Leather Comfort strap for the Fostex T50RP, and V-moda Boom PRO mic (for when gaming)... Have better than the comfort level of the K7XX, with a pristine and detailed sound I like and better bass than the K7XX had. Like them more than my TH-X00 Purplehearts because they are SOOO much more comfortable and while not having as much bass as the TH-X00 PH do have more than stock SHP9500 and it is not a huge step down from the TH-X00 PH's. I've found that SHP9500's, Fostex TH-X00's, and the upper end Audio Technicas are more of what I like in a headphone, not so much the AKG/Sennheiser way of things. Do plan to pick up the Monoprice M1060's...they should be able to let me save up for my end game STAX SR-L500 setup way down the line.

Massdrop MSRP's are always ridiculous. Anything they make in conjunction with another brand always has an astronomical price, but the real MSRP is what they are selling it for. If Massdrop is the only ones selling them, then their price is the MSRP, whatever else they put is just gibberish to make people feel good.

I think where this headphone stand out is imaging. I never heard a headphone with such precision in that regard, listening to Nina Simone “I put a spell on you “ I could tell exactly where every instrument were positioned in the stage , amazing. I just received these today and compared to Sennheiser HD800 and HD660S their imaging is much more accurate.

really appreciate the video, but: as you said, everything about headphones at this level in quality is subjective and personal preference. i really, really appreciate the fact that you said this. there are only two videos saying bad things about this pair of headphones: this video and some mentally underdeveloped guy's video that just says they're bad, comparing them straight to the HD650s, without saying that it is personal preference. from that we can gather he likes more smooth music genres. it really comes down to what genres of music you listen to and if the specific pair was burned in (and of course how the headphones were treated before they got sent to you). everyone says the K7XXs are like the swiss army knife of headphones, BUT unlike the HD650s or HD600s, the K7XXs really shine in more dynamic music genres, not smooth ones. currently i'm waiting for my pair of K7XXs to arrive. as i read on many forums and talked to some people, they are better for metal, dubstep, rock, electronic music, etc, where as the HD650s are much, much better for smooth genres like classical and things like that. and yeah, people say the HD650s are not good for metal at all and i really approve. went to the biggest audio showroom in my country and tested some metal on the HD650s. it sounded like shieet. with that said, i really appreciate this video, the quality is great. keep up the good work!

Nick I found the K7XX to sound very boring, slightly veiled, and too rolled off on either end. I like to listen to highly dynamic music and it didn't matter - Jazz, Experimental electronic, Vocaloid, instrumental electric guitar... on the K7XX just sounded flat out boring and lifeless to me. Got the SHP9500 on a whim and much prefer everything they do over anything the K7XX does. Sound is very much is subjective to the listener preferences, I know what my preferences are and look to headphones that will work with them. AKG K7XX is no go for me, even if it is one of the most comfortable and lightest headphone designs out there.

Finally a guy that uses his brain. Yesterday when i received the K7XXs i didn't really like them, but today, after just around 10-12 hours of burning them in, i am starting to really like what i hear from them. They are really flat and neutral sounding and i really like that. In comparison to the HD650s for example they are superior in every way, at least from what i heard with my ears.

AKG K702 and K7xx is absolutely identical. And btw all new AKGs are now made in China except the K812 maybe, that i dont know. 7 line is the Chinaline. Still i like the 7 series more than the 8.

Headphones are a personal preference, but usually you can find a reviewer that has the same taste as yourself. This young man and I don't share the same opinions and I'm not sure how old he is 17, 18 and I was an Audiophile from birth, but I don't believe he has been around long enough to have experienced Hi end audio to give an accurate description and I say that based on his descriptions of sound from products he has reviewed, but hey it is subjective and if your view seems to mirror DMS then that's all that counts....
