I heard that this song was written about Massachusetts being the first US state to legalize gay marriage without knowing much more about Massachusetts than that. However, this song was written about 10 years later on. Maybe they saw a news story about the 10th anniversary. Anyway, it's a weird song, though I don't think they had any point other than trying to be funny. They are quite funny and I need to go see if they have anything new that's been uploaded.

@@JudyAdele Ylvis really only have two priorities when writing songs, it has to be funny, and it has to at least partially involve a new music genre. Of the ones you've seen so far this one had gospel and cheer, what does the fox say has edm, and old friends is folk.
As a Norwegian, this was a damn good promotion (not sure if it's right word to use) for Massachusetts that I want to go and check it out myself 😅 Not often Massachusetts is mention, we hear more often about Boston. Just found out what the M in MiT stands for and also Harvard is there too 😅

I would agree... Massachusetts is not often mentioned.... Same here as well... more familiar with Boston than Mas! :) I have never been there...but they sure do make me want to go.

I always took this as Norwegian guys' take on a random USA place. Some of their concert banter over the years randomly throws together US cities and names. This summer, they toss hamburgers to the crowd during Massachusetts.

OH GOOD! There is a lot of... wait, what?? to keep track of in that song! glad it made you smile. :) School - Going good... BUSY... and a little confusing at times.... but good! :) I'm about to enter "spring break"... that has nothing to do with spring... just getting another many inches of snow... and break... just means catching up with less pressure... and for hat I AM SO GRATEFUL!!!! Hey, awesome!! Can’t wait to see how you like it! (After watching) Yep, that’s the correct response 😆 I could do without the homophobia-adjacent stuff, but the rest of the song is brilliant and random and fun (enough for me to give it a pass). I love the spelling and pronunciations jokes, which show up in several of their songs. Which is really impressive considering English isn’t their first language. The random gospel choir also makes appearances in several videos, and that utterly delights me for some reason. If you enjoyed that, you should check out Yoghurt, Stonehenge, Mr. Toot, Truckers’ Hitch, I Will Never Be A Star, and especially Engine For Gabriel. Actually any and all of their songs in English are pretty fantastic. When they released their acapella song, they tweeted about Pentatonix copying them. 😂 Their production values are consistently top-notch, and every song is a pastiche of a different genre of music, all very well done. It’s ridiculous that What Does The Fox Say is the only thing most Americans know of these guys. I always love watching people see them for the first time, thanks for this, and hope to see you sample more of Ylvis in the future!! 🥰

Yes... I can totally agree with you on the "homophobia-adjacent"... A good description. I wasn't sure if there was a commentary being made that, if I knew more about the state, or history... I would understand. OR... if it was just SOOOO random! Ya... the spelling stuff... Interesting... Amazing what they pulled into that song that has nothing to do with MAS!... :) VERY fun... thank you!!

They are not homophobic at all, it was literally just a reference to the state being the first in the US to allow same-sex marriage. Which is universal in Norway.
