The Mass of St. Frances Cabrini, by popular composer Kevin Keil, is one of the most popular traditional settings offered by Oregon Catholic Press. Mr. Keil brings more than 40 years of experience to his sacred music ministry and has published various songs and settings with OCP, GIA, and WLP including One Spirit, One Church, One Love Released, See Amid the Winter’s Snow, All Good Gifts, and Signed by Ashes.
OCP, or Oregon Catholic Press, describes the setting this way: "Arranged to suit the needs of any size parish, Mass of St. Frances Cabrini is sure to capture your assembly’s interest week after week, offering memorable tunes in a meditative setting. Throughout this Mass setting Kevin Keil has masterfully woven together a series of recurring chants in the Gregorian tradition with melodic themes that are easy to learn and easy to remember. Easily scalable, it can be as big or small as you need it to be with a variety of instrumental accompaniments."
This setting is best suited for Organ and can be used in parishes big and small. It is a favorite of those who "lean traditional," as well as many who prefer "mainstream" mass settings. Also, the Agnus Dei for this setting is bilingual with English and Latin text.
OCP included this setting in their popular Breaking Bread and Today's Missal/Music Issue missals, but it was removed in 2022. Frances Cabrini was replaced by the new Mass of St. Mary Magdalene by upcoming composer Sarah Hart. This was a disappointing announcement for lean-traditionalists who viewed Keil's setting as one of the better options offered in their missals. Some even viewed this move as OCP embracing their "Spirit and Song" music and composers, a contemporary wing of the company, of which Sarah hart is apart of, and moving away from organ-based music. On the other hand, some viewed the decision as refreshing and were glad to have a new setting offered.
