The fact that he did that well with longbows on a open map and against Inca is very impressive. I honestly thought he had that game in the bag for a second. Going against a counter civilization is always hard.

I hate to say it, but this was a throw from Metal. I lost count of the amount of times he let eagles walk right into his base. It was actually painful to watch. Also he never scouted the gold in the back of his base, if he counted his piles he should have realized he was short one and looked for it. He had the advantage and could have won if he had not let his eco be completely wrecked

Walling his opponent in was just plain bravado and was quite foolish. If he had done those double walls to split the map instead, he would have been so much better off.

@@jako0981 While I agree overall, I don't think his idea was to actually wall in his opponent, as anyone can easily bust through a single layer of wall like that. I think it was more to create natural choke points, and even if Vinch got through the wall it would be a small opening that would funnel his units and make it easier to defend with the longbows - sort of like on Black Forest where it's just nature doing most of the chokes. I think his two main "throws" if you can call it that, was that his main eco was so exposed, he didn't pluck holes and he didn't station troops before the very late game, he just let the eagles run in freely and paid for it every single time - I guess he was too focused on his own main push. Secondly, after denying Vinch all those resources in the beginning, Metal didn't do much in order to further deny resources despite having the long range units on hold for quite the majority of the game. As T90 said at one point, he should position some longbows at key locations to either deny or harass Vinch's villagers on gold, stone, and various woodlines, but he didn't. He didn't starve Vinch, he just focused on the front line, which meant that Vinch could keep falling back and relocating while continuing the eagle raid spam without much consequence because Metal was so dead focused on that main push. He had one army, one front line the entire game, and I guess that's partly one of the difficulties of playing Britons at a high level. Eagles can just be sent in in small batches and you don't really need to be hard focused on them, and just 3-4 in the enemy eco can cause serious trouble, whereas the Longbows are only really effective in mass (at least in this matchup).

Have to agree. He didn't get that relic at his base either. He also had a few problems with his micro while pushing. There were a number of times where he positioned his longbows under tower fire unnecessarily. And once he'd cleared out the east corner, he not only let his army waste time and lose momentum (chess players would say he lost a tempo), but he went the wrong way. Killing that castle wasn't going to gain him much. To make matters even worse he also chose to worst moment to split his longbows, so both groups got worn down by eagles and skirms.

T90: "He is one of the best players" Player: 0:28 deer goes back to spawn.

I don't even play AOE and I can tell that 0:28 must have been embarrassing. So many valuable seconds wasted on a failed micro.

I’ve been dying to see longbows in a matched game

Fantastic match, practically the whole time it seemed so close and even kept feeling like it was flipping back and forth at so many points.

Does anyone else ever move their mouse to the edge of their screen.. Thinking they can pan the youtube video over lol.

Metal threw away the game by not filling the gaps and not raiding with longbows.

6Twisted eh longbow raids could be easily cleaned up by like 2 eagles plus villagers get BS upgrades.

Also I think he created the light cav too late, should of created them earlier to raid and chase vills.

Makes me reminiscent on my childhood days of range spam.

Love these type of games. Messy but still very high quality gameplay! Metal and Vinch thank you both!

Oh my favourite tactic. Fun fact english longbows were designed to volley fire like artillery so im annoyed that this game forces you to select a specific target to fire at and then almost all arrows land on that specific target 200 yards away. It should be similar to total war where an area is covered instead. To balance this you can add a skimish stance (run away automatically when enemy is close. ) or add a melee attack

IMO a giant throw from Metal. Had such a big lead and all he should have done was properly wall up his base, but instead neglected to do so and slowly died.

In fairness he walled and rewalled that hole a couple of times and eagles tore down houses multiple times. And I'm not sure his lead was that large.

@@legion2590 Housewalls and palisades aren't very good walls though starting castle age. There were plenty of cliffs and wood options to make a solid stonewall, he was just too lazy to do it. Wouldn't have costed that much and would have protected him against eagle raids.

Agreed, after the first break after the raid while vinch was trying to kill off metal's longbows, metal should have rewalled home. Especially when trying to wall vinch in, it's a fallback for if that fails

I was expecting a Briton win, it being hyped like that :(

Spectacular game. Props to Vinch for holding out strong, I would've resigned after that first forward castle for sure.

Sweet game, I like the longer high level back and forth games.

So many longbows even treb attack ground would've given money shots.

Longbows is all a friend would make and he would take out castles and rams with just longbowmen and nothing could get close enough to his army to kill any units.

Definitely want to see more metal games. Even more especially Metal vs Hoang.

Amazing game, really didn't know who would win until the very end.

Imagine a real medieval war where the opposition just builds a castle inside of your own town which I imagine would take months? This is why I love AOE2, wish I was good at it though

Years! Castles took often 2-10 or even hundreds of years to build irl! Edit: imagine 1 villager irl spending his whole life (average 30 years?) back then to build a castle and it all being ruined by 1 trebby boi

Well 30 years was the average....because only 2/10 children ever grew up. The child mortality rate was horrifying. If you got past being a kid, you were probably going to live a whole decent life unless you were carried away by small pocks or some other plague...As long as you didn't do anything stupid which broke your limbs. In which case you would be lame for the rest of your much shorter life. In short, there were plenty of elderly people back then. The idea that perfectly healthy people at 30 years of age would go, "Welp, time to climb into a casket." is rather silly. Although, castles often did take a long time to build because there was no mechanization. Even the cranes were powered by massive human run hamster wheels, which apparently were operated by blind people..since it was all they could really do work wise.

Long bows finally. My favorite unit.

Vinchester not deleting the wall that caused the bottleneck was a major blunder.

This was like bullfighting. Vinch was getting knocked around, but he made sure not to stay down. He was always ready to sidestep and rebuild elsewhere. Meanwhile, he was taking Metal down little by little, killing the villagers and slowly bleeding him out of his resources. It always looked like Metal was going to win until the very end, when all those small victories from Vinch finally added up and the scales tipped in his favor. Metal lost his momentum which he had maintained since the start of the game, and he finally found himself outnumbered and overwhelmed. Without the eco to restore what he lost, he was doomed. Fantastic game all around. I also really appreciate just how neck and neck these two players are. It feels like every step is calculated carefully, like they're in each other's heads. The way the player's positions on the map rotated throughout the game is a testament to just how much this particular game was like a dance.

I once played a feudal rush on nomad that failed. We were right next to each other and at 90% to castle age he petarded my wall and at 98% petarded my TC. Good times.

Should have built those stone walls defensively instead of trying to box Vinch in his base. Without the raids, Metal had this game.

Or at least do both. He could have attempted the walling Vinch in and replace his defensive barriers to stop the raiding by Vinch. It was still impressive game.

Kudos for the Bait and switch title. Great game great casting.

Being a Brits player watching this made me smile, cheer and cry. Longbows are fun, but only in very special situations. I love them regardless :))

I love watching your vids, really cool content, love the community games as well. I keep looking, but I can never find "bri-uns" in the game. I would love to play them, I normally end up playing "bri-T-ons" instead LOL. Keep up the good work.

What an overall fun game to watch. I gotta admit I was rooting for Vinch the whole way through since Incas are my favorite civ, but it was nerve-wracking to see those Longbows look like they were gonna win Metal the game.

This is a great video. T90, you should do the whole best of 21 match. I don't think I am alone in that I watch AEO2 for the strategy part of it, as that is what is entertaining to me. Maybe your twitch followers see too many strategy like games, but I would doubt youtube guys do. I became of fan of yours watching Jordan-Viper best of 21 and would like more content like that.

Good on Metal for giving us a really interesting game where we see every new player's favourite unit used at a high level! I really wish Britons got Thumb Ring! Spirit of the Law found that if they did it would have a huge effect on Longbowmen! Just like I wish Byzantines got Blast Furnace and Bloodlines... Why can't my favourite civs be super OP lol!

britons can't have thumb ring precisely because it would break them. Thumb ring keeps their archers from being unbearable, it is an intentional balancing decision. but I think you realize since you admit you want them to be super OP xD and yes, Byzantines would be ridiculous with those upgrades since they focus so much on cheap trash and it'd make the cataphract overtuned

@@futbolluva Yeah, I know that the Longbowmen would be OP with Thumb Ring. I do kind of wish Byzantines at least got Bloodlines though, to help their Knights in Castle Age and make the Cataphracts a bit meatier in Post-Imp.

I would've really liked to see Metal at some point gain the foresight to move his military much further around the map in anticipation of Vinch moving his eco, surely the lack of vils would've made that abundantly obvious during the 30ish minutes he had a mil advantage in Vinch's territory.

With my friends at team games we would see either mass longbows either mass jinzares

To be honest, there are a lot of KZreadrs who do mostly or even entirely old/classic gaming but KZread tends to not show them to people and as such, they get very few views which then ends up with them being shown to people even less. Usually, they either forever upload for nobody or they realize that not getting any views after years of effort is just pointless and give up.

one of the biggest game changers I've seen in a long time. The timing was impeccable. Metal was about to go for champions (which would have probably put the final nail into the coffin) but due to the raid he could no longer afford the upgrades and was stuck with longswordmen for a very long time (he never actually got champion either)

Tbh, I have seen an AI spam a little over twice as much longbow men then mbl, even then this was super fun to watch, especially when you start cheering for the underdog Vinch! LETS SEE SOME MORE!!!

You have to use some meat shield as longbows spears, knights, or swardsmen

This makes you realize how much more potential there is in AoE2. In Starcraft 2 pro games just not using your army in the first 10 minutes, like red did, would instantly lose you the game. I am absolutely shocked that he doesn't use them.

I love Longbows, British,my favorite civ. But you need swordman and Knights to protect your Longbows and Trebuchets. Damn man, place permanent guards in your town! Focus on defending the tiny choke points, leave 10% of your army to defend the small choke points then continue your attack. Yeah this was not civ loss, this was just weak tactics employed.
