And what does knowing what women look like even have to do with what you're allowed to want in the first place? So what if designs I like or dislike are realistic or not? Realism and personal taste are two different things, you can both know what real is AND still not like it. People always defended Stellar Blade's Eve as being based on a real model, but I always said, so what? I only care what I think looks good, end of story. The design being based on a real woman couldn't matter less as long as I like what I see. If anything, I think being "real" is the wrong argument to make at all even if it did work there, because defending a design for being based on a real woman (or a real man for that matter,) implies that realism should in any way limit what we can want in a character design. And once you've willingly agreed in any way that realism is the rule or matters, you're really screwed if the next actually appealing design isn't based on a real model at all. Such as, oh I dunno... just about every video game character design there ever has been, until recently.

If you want to see your bland, mediocre self in fictional characters, fine. You do you. But it should also be equally fine to value, identify with, and want characters better than yourself. Characters that represent what you wish you were, or more generally the world you wish you lived in. What happened to fiction being about the aspirational rather than the representative? Real life is already underwhelming at best, if fiction can't at least be better then what's left for those who seek the idealized and spectacular? I'm tired of people who need validation dragging down character designs for everyone else. It ruins designs and it doesn't even change how people feel anyway - characters as meh as I and most people are, (if not even worse,) don't make us seem better, they just make fiction worse.

The bizarre conceit is that only men want attractive women in games, and that the answer is odd-looking or ugly women. The corollary would seem to be that women do want that, and men must want unattractive men. But none of that is true. Men want good-looking men (unless that doesn't fit the character), and women also want good-looking women (unless that doesn't fit the character). So a handsome, athletic dude is as much the "male gaze" as a shapely attractive woman is the "female gaze," and vice versa. People just enjoy physically attractive people - gender plays almost no role in it whatsoever. This entire movement is based on an entirely imaginary mythology with no basis whatsoever in an even cursory acquaintance with reality.

I want to play as a pretty woman again, and I’m speaking as a woman. It’s fun to play as beautiful and pretty characters

If alienating people is so wrong, then why is it so much worse to alienate the people who are threatened by attractive designs than the people who dislike ugly designs? If the goal is compassion, then where's the compassion for people who don't like the ugly androgynous designs? And you can't say to the critics it doesn't matter, because it apparently does matter enough to intentionally make the designs ugly for the supposed betterment of some people. And if fictional designs matter enough that they can bring joy or suffering to one group for one set of reasons, then they matter enough to generate equally strong feelings among others for other reasons. Character designs, as well as the effects they can have on viewers, either matter equally to everyone, or equally to no one. Suffering because you find the designs ugly is just as much, and as valid a type of suffering, as finding the designs non-representative. So when making ugly designs, at least have the spine to admit you're actively and knowingly valuing some people's enjoyment over others, and your compassion is, in fact, limited to those you agree with.

You try to make a game for "everyone" you end up making a game for no one.

They didn't go unscathed by EA mid development and all the old guard was still there at the time. Story and general art direction were the only things that didn't see any changes as far as we know. They made a deal with the Sith of the games industry and EA kept changing the deal further.

Pretty sure in most cases the faces were indeed altered from the model’s look. They probably find woke models or people that only care about the money. Some of these models are also probably threatened with cancellation if they do anything. Cancel culture is a powerful thing for anyone with any sort of following or career.

Im 31 and i havent played/bought a video game in over 10 years. Trist me its very much doable, if you need to play a video game buy a game thats worth the time, buy an old game or grab some friends and play a multiplayer game like smash bros or mario party, ive only played that a small handful of times and it was only ever with my friends console. Regardless if its 2 years or 20 years, you all can do it 👍

I agree. I'm a straight male but will play male or female characters despite my being one and not the other. My gameplay doesn't have to reflect real life and I usually choose games that don't. Larger-than-life, colorful imaginary worlds are where a lot of the fun is, for me. There's a reason that there aren't a lot of hugely successful games about doing the laundry or vacuuming the floor.

The new Dragon Age, even with the 'quirky' characters removed, it is painfully generic. The fact it is the typical, walk forward while action happens around you then rolling into a cutscene. The fact it is basically Mass Effect with Swords, even having the ability wheel for the Christ sake. Voice acting which has zero emotion behind it. Character title cards instead of an actual dialogue introduction, because "Who are you?" is such a challenge for Bioware these days. Lastly, given with Bioware and their constant lying through recent trailers. From Inquisition, Andromeda and Anthem. The fact this is apparently very early in development despite coming out fall 2024, which gives them 6 months?! Edit: Oh yeah the fact it is like a Cyberpunk setting even with lights that focus on a character like a hoverdyne police unit?!

Woke only hurts. Sooner or later companies will lose enough money and realize this.

Yep just let it be. Failure is not bad, it just a tool to improve you on what is lacking. I don't care about the difficulty of the game and I like campaigns more than multi-player shenanigans (AFK, cyber bullying, trolls, playing the victim, identity clash nonsense and SO ON). I played my games as hard as I can (from normal to realistic). I sometimes suck on realistic difficulty but that the charm. Role play well no need for restrictions, but these "loot boxes" that costs real MONEY just greed too far.

And you know the old man necromancer is gay. LOL

It is funny that in an age that sex and being sexy has become more accepted and profitable, the game industry is going the other way.

This is what happens when you make games for 0000000.1% of the population.

I am a woman, a feminist and I want pretty women and attractive men in my games! I grew up with DA, romanced boys and girls, but here I want absolutely nobody - I can't imagine my character that I would care about laying ANYONE from this trailer. Going back to Pathfinder.

As a socially-ostracised half-French (American) and half-Japanese woman who moved to Japan in my teen years (post puberty) and was made fun of for having too light of a skintone and being labeled as "fat" for having a bigger bust and wider hips than the natively-born Japanese girls of the time, I can relate to being looked down upon as being ugly. I used to look up to beautiful and strong women in videogames and within the cartoons (both western and japanese) as well as in some comics as an inspiration in character and physique. Lara Croft, despite all of her polygonal and simplified form, was absolutely many leagues ahead for me as a favourite character. I loved the original Indiana Jones movies, loved Harrison Ford in the iconic eponymous role, I admired his character and persona but ultimately he was a male and I was not so. Lara Croft filled that little void for me and I am quite the fan of the reboot trilogy! Beauty as a standard does not necessarily mean a specific "look", rather, it is an aesthetical guideline to which human beings follow to look their best in health and in form (mind, body, spirit). Turning away from it is to go against the possible hundreds of thousands of years (even millions!) of socio-biological evolutionary trials that both men and women have faced in order to learn to get along with each other and to search for the mate that best fits the type of mould that defines you as a person. The attack against beauty, against biological women is admittedly terrifying for me and conjures up childhood trauma of being made fun of for being different for how I was born. Ugh... that face reveal for perfect dark was disgusting. I dont know why i even had hope for the game. I guess i thought, "Hey, it's a game with a female protagonist naturally in the game, maybe it could be good." But nope thats not enough for them. I keep saying it. "Good luck finding that mythical modern audience." These games are not for me, and it saves me money to not have to shell out for unattractive live services. Call me a bigot? Tsk tsk, spend some time in some voice channels to refine your insults. You've got nothing on those. Meanwhile I've got a backlog of worthwhile games to go through that have interesting mechanics and meaningful, even believable stories, and if I'm looking for eyecandy, there's a whole adult only industry for that. I don't need AAA.

The actual talent making these games needs to break off into small, private studios so they can get away from these out of touch decision makers

That's too passive, we need to make our own that are such masterpieces these companies will be driven to utter bankruptcy. Leave them nothing sure but also take from them EVERYTHING.

These people don't get to say they're marginalized anymore when absolutely EVERYTHING is developed around their ideology and sexuality.

Surprisingly, the one dev team that didn't have purple haired white women on it (Expedition 33) and Lesbians are Strange (Life is Strange) were like the only two that had attractive women.

I'm completely detatched from who I create to play these games. I did Mass Effect as a jacked Samuel L Jackson womaniser, DA Origins as an aristocratic human asshole who lied and stole his way to the throne, and BG3 as a friendly lesbian dwarf nature-witch. Thats why I never got all this drivel about representation, it's not you, just create a character that feels neat.

Taash in previous Dreadwolf concept art looked like a certified baddie, then they dropped the trailer... and there has never been a bigger catfish, than Taash.

The forced diversity is also just very noticable. No one would notice, nor care for a colourful cast of characters if they were presented in a more natural manner. These characters though, are not only colourful... but they also each seem to check a number of other different tags that pretty much make them instantly recognizable as a woke DEI insert. And well, usually these games tend to be pretty compromised in terms of actual game design as well, filled to the brim with all kinds of mechanics and other things for mass appeal (with the result being that many feel very samey in terms of gameplay and have all kinds of similar gameplay systems). Sadly there's still a lot of people who don't quite get it so they complain about the woke stuff, yet still buy the game or pirate it so that they can still play it. This won't stop until people stop buying these games and stop praising these games. Sure, some of them may have some pretty nice gameplay or segments here & there... but gaming's big and there's no shortage of great games without any woke crap forced into it (though these days I supposed you'd have to go to the indie scene for that). Japan's games also seem to be more and more affected by it. I'd recommend people to start buying Chinese and Korean games. They don't give an eff about appeasing to western woke policies. If these Asian non-Japanese companies start to establish themselves as huge game developers in the west then the western devs & publishers will either have to adapt or get crushed.

Wtf, I genuinely thought this new Dragon Age game was a spinoff because it looks like a cartoonish woke version of Dragon Age...you're telling me it's supposed to be the next main line game?!
