That's why saying goodbye to Liara makes the most sense. Ash is already absent in the second game, an you can leave her on Virmire too if you don't want a romance. Liara is a writer's pet, so there's just no getting rid of her once you, even accidentally, get into it. She is literally the only crewmate who cannot die at any point (not counting low asset me3 ending)

Most guys would react to it this way in real life, regardless of whatever fantasies they jerk off to. It would virtually destroy your whole reputation on the ship and might even cost you command. And the two women would grow to hate both you and one another within hours. Not worth it. That's why all societies on Earth have always gravitated towards monogamy; even where polygamy is legal it's practically never practiced outside the narrowest of elites. You just can't build a functioning family on two women who compete with each other over the man's affection.

@yarpen26 This is just wrong. While yes, that is a likely outcome, that is a likely outcome because people are terrible at everything. The only likely reason any normal male would give this answer is that they do care for both (maybe not even in the same way) and don't want to upset either by not choosing them, even if that's a bad decision. The women, likely also being incompetent emotional humans would likely take offense instead of understanding where he was coming from and backing off and discussing reasonably. They may or may not feel a competitive aggression towards each other, but that was clearly already present, because Ashley here is a hateful scumbag in general. This rift may jeopardize authority, but probably only on a social level. It may do worse given the whole fraternizing with subordinates issue, but that's a maybe, and since Shepard is a spectre, you can basically guarantee it wouldn't be able to threaten him officially regardless of Alliance regs. Not only is he not fully under Alliance authority, but he's too valuable an asset. Most people don't reconcile conflict well, so it would likely only get worse, not better. The individuals involved being reasonable at any step along the way would completely avoid this being a problem. As for societies on Earth, no. The commoners have almost always been monogamous, but polygamy is extremely common in the elites across Human societies. There are multiple reasons for this, none of which boil down to humans being terrible and irrational. There's no fundamental reason you can't be polygamous and maintain healthy relationships. It is, however, a greater burden on the involved parties in certain ways, and can only be made work by the parties involved being both reasonable and earnest. Part of what you said gets to it: competing for the man's affection. That alone is a toxic mentality for ANY relationship, of any number of persons. You should never be competing within a relationship in any serious fashion. You should always be cooperating. You are not individuals trying to get ahead, you are a collective working together for mutual betterment. Regardless of how you feel about the arrangement, Liara seems like exactly the kind of character/person who would be able to function in a poly relationship healthily.

While we never had a threesome or anything they were really civil with each other and even became sort of friends. It bugged me that in ME1 there was no clear distinction between "just talking to your crewmates" and flirting. In my first full triple-game playthrough I also accidentally got this scene, even though I was not intending to romance either of them (was saving myself for Tali in ME2). So in my last femshep playthrough I purposely ignored Liara most of the game and left Kaidan on Virmire... just to make sure I don't accidentally romance either of them.

By complete accident, I romanced Ashley in my first playthrough as MaleShep, and I did the exact same thing to resolve the issue. Since then I just avoid her and kill her automatically in all other playthroughs because I just like Kaidan in general as a person, plus Ashley is a space racist.

@@davecullins1606 not really a space racist , she's just more pro-human , she stops being a space racist after mass effect 1 because of learning they aren't so bad fighting along with them in mass effect 1. Most people dont find that out tho cause they always leave her to die. And her space racist phase is because of her family , not because she hated them herself , she explains that pretty well in the first game. And no offense to Kaidan but he doesn't have a personality at all , nor character development , he's just your daily empty soldier character , and his lore doesnt go further than his implants and biotics that he barely even mentions after the first game. Meanwhile Ash goes through character development , changes her opinion about aliens and her personality and lore go further than "I shoot people"

Romanced Ash in ME1, dumped her in ME2 (if she had been reasonable on Horizon, I probs would have stuck with her) and pursued Tali through 2 + 3. I have no regrets

Fulade 0306 Ha, if you seriously cinsider that how you pick the female squadmates, take a second look. In ME1 she has the wide hips and the breasts- Liara and Ashley are shapeless. ME2 she has pretty much the same shape, its just harder to see on screen since there are far less instances in which you can see someone not holding a gun, but in some instances you can look. I personally just like her personality, plus she and Garrus will fall in love with each other if you romance neither... You can even interrupt them in "the moment" in a very similar fashion to Joker cockblocking you in ME1 after you get locked on the citadel (if you romanced someone).

Ashley isnt even a xenophobe, she just doesn't trust aliens that much in Mass Effect 1 which is completely understandable. In Mass Effect 1 most humans don't trust aliens because the first contact war wasn't even that long ago and humans are like second class citizens still and aren't taken seriously by other species. Liara even says to you in Mass Effect 1 shes never taken humans seriously and thought they were kind of a joke. With Ashley you also have to remember her families past which will severely effect her view on aliens in Mass Effect 1 because shes had limited contact with them herself as shes mainly been stationed on human colonies like Eden Prime. Now another problem people have with Ashley is how she reacts to you returning in Mass Effect 2 which I really don't get. Do you expect her to be cool with the fact you're now with a known terrorist organisation? Do you expect her to just accept it is you after you being dead for 2 years and been rebuilt by a terrorist organisation? As far as she knows you could have been brainwashed, have a control chip in your brain, be just a clone or robot. Her reaction in Mass Effect 2 is completely understandable IMO. I honestly think people hate how shes slow to trust you again and it takes getting half way through Mass Effect 3 to gain her trust again but is her being slow to trust really a bad thing? Do you want all the characters to be like Garrus and Tali and just trust you imediently despite the fact your with a terrorist organisation and might not even be you? (Don't get me wrong here though I love Garrus and Tali

As someone who thought the same just a few months ago, I can say that you will be very happy that you bought into this series. I recently completed ME2 and I can say that it is by far one of the best games I've ever played, especially in terms of story and characters. ME1 is also a fantastic game with a very classic KOTOR-type feel to it. You will be very pleased that you took the time to experience this series, though I can't yet speak for ME3.

CultOfMoMo I romanced Liara in ME1, Tali in ME2 and came back to Liara in the third one, and I'll keep it that way on my second run, except that I'll end up choosing Tali.

I did same thing before getting Lair of the shadow broker. Liara in ME1, Tali in ME2, and Liara in ME3. But liara knew i romanced tali and asked if i still loved her. Of course i said YES! ANd then tali killed herself in ME3 because i didnt do the right options in ME2 to save both legion and tali. They both died. At that point, i restarted ME2. That day was a sad day for me.

Well, I suppose a racist would be more interesting than a xeno-archeologist who is the daughter of a super powerful matriarch who eventually becomes the Shadow Broker and finds the schematics for the Crucible device. Oh wait, Ashley can become a spectre too. It is not like the Shadow Broker commands Spectres though, cough, Vasir, cough. Liara is the true love, Ashley got her sisters.

Dude,lots people don't like her because her attitude and her reactions. @@Cx10110100 she refers to herself as a young woman on her pilgrimage in the third game, so... The shadow broker dossier has her birthdate as 2161 and ME1 starts 2183, so she’s 22. Also just think about how successful the quarian fleet would be if they sent teenagers out into the galaxy with no support system and just let them ‘survive’ on their own. The pilgrimage is clearly just an abstracted extension of the idea that you aren’t an adult until you have a job and can support yourself without your parents’ help in our modern society.

samturrett Quasi-racist I think would be more like it - she disdains actual racists in ME1 when they're trying to get Shepard to agree to their petition or something like that, down in the wards of the citadel where the Blade Runner style traffic is visible, same level as the one doctor who was being black mailed but toward the final missions (I think while the Normandy's impounded, but I don't remember for certain).

I like how Liara interprets "can't I choose you both?" as choosing her. Triss or Yennifer in The Witcher 3 won't make such an interpretation, you just loose them both. When I had a male Shepard with this scene, I let Ash die guarding the bomb. That male character of mine went on to cheat on Liara with Jack (after the Shadow Broker mission so I didn't get any confrontation). Jack was first to die. So I was surprised Liara didn't bring Jack up in Mass Effect 3 If a female Shepard hooks up with Samantha, Liara gets mad. What gives? She's okay with Ashley or Kaiden, but she doesn't like Samantha?

It is very common to accidentally romance her. After the first mission all the positive responses you give regarding her joining the crew will start the romance subplot.

There was an appropriate way to propose that situation, but Mark Meer couldn't help but deliver the intentionally slimiest delivery on an already poorly written suggestion 😹

I'm playing through the series again, and I just made the same choice. Too bad they didn't allow a threesome. What's awesome is how receptive Liara is after all that.

Liara is so awkward, like a robot from Westworld. I don't want to imagine how she would comment every single movement in bed.

I went with Ash through all 3 games because I kept forget where Liara was, but if I ever did this I'd pick Liara. She handled the situation way better and didn't even insult ash back.

On my second playthrough of the trilogy I romanced Ash exclusively because I wanted to know what it felt like to be both an intergalactic hero and a doormat.

Dammit! I chose the same answer as you, but I was aiming for Ashley, but got Liara...! THAT MUST BE CORRECTED!

This is why I don't understand people liking Ashley. Hate on kaiden all you want, call him boring call him a whiner but at least hes not a racist
