Because then, in context you of course go against what the mission objective was in Shep's mind which is destroy. With Synthesis it's like what Saren had in mind originally but failed, and gave in to fear and hopelessness, and indoctrinated too With Control it's along the lines of what TIM was hoping for while still somewhat rational, but he of course (if successful) would've only controlled them for Cerberus 1st & Humanity in General 2nd All other species would've been killed or enslaved But with paragon Shepard, he controls to protect and watch over all species And with Synthesis, everyone is still the same, but now with the knowledge of AIs and AIs with the knowledge of organics, both working together to build a Heaven out of the Galaxy more or less

@@TheNumerosopher Synthesis is the go-to ending for me. It leads to greater understanding on both sides, and unlimited access to the knowledge of civilizations past. Imagine the existential and technological leap that comes from this. Not to mention that everyone in the galaxy is now on equal footing. It's beyond my ability to even imagine the full implications of it all.

@@Raffney Do you think this is truely the message the writers tried to get across? To me it was more of an issue with EA's corperate structure forcing the game out to please their shareholders. Throughout the Mass Effect trilogy the reapers were represented as ruthless, diabolical, apathetic killing machines. They would liquify humans and use them as a fuel source! They would psionically indoctrinate subjects and bend them to their will. They would turn the dead into husks that would then hunt and kill their own brethren and families. To me this sudden twist at the end of ME3 goes against everything the reapers represented up to this point. Now I think the ME team wanted to throw in a plot twist like they did with Saren and again with the Illusive Man, but I found that it was poorly executed.

  • @Raffney

@@SwCreators The entire ending is poorly executed and your statement represents exactly my feelings back then. Though i'm a big mass effect fan and i still loved the franchise for what it is. So i tried to see the best in it and over the years it became apparent to me that the ending does make sense if you allow it (some of the things in the ending are still stupid though). Anyway the creators in Bioware decided to make the story similar to Matrix but on a galactic scale. There is a nearly perfect system in place with an almighty unbeatable god ai pulling the strings from behind the scene. And everything becomes different in the end mainly cause of the actions of one chosen one. It's also similar between the two franchises how poorly this idea was received and understood. Mass audience can't handle big lore changing reveals that need a lot of thinking at the last second. Especially with that much bad company pr behind it.

When I was younger, I knew about the game, but I started with the third one of the trilogy, I quickly gave up and lost sight of the game, five years later, I looked back at it and decided to start the game from the very beginning. Now, I realize why this game is amazing, it is consistent, the characters are endearing and interesting to know just as the races and their opinions between them, the game emits real thematic or questions through lots of different and interesting subjects to think about. We are talking about an enemy who can reduce everything we love through the game easily, obviously that stress quickly starts to catch up with us thinking that everything will be fine and that we must at all costs succeed our mission until the end. It’s not just a game, but a masterpiece that leaves us on suspension points by inviting us to write the rest of it. Through my years of gaming, it’s the first time I’ve been able to feel so many emotions, stress, laughter, doubt and even fear, this trilogy will remain for me a proof that we don’t just create a game to play, but also to live it.

Such an eerie, haunting, vague and mysterious music. You are literally left speechless with the choices presented to you. None of them feels right or wrong. While I'm disappointed with quite a few things about the way they ended this, and even a few things about the direction of the third game in general - It's hard to deny the music is perfect for the moment and the artists completely knocked it out of the park with the visuals. Maybe someday if they make a remaster of the trilogy they could "revise" some of the pain points of the third game.

I played through this series 6 times as all 6 classes, coming up with a bit of a backstory in my head for each individual Shepard. My original Femshep Infiltrator wanted to do right by all so she ended up going Synthesis. My Broshep 'Space Cowboy' Vanguard wanted to do right but didn't feel he had the right to change everyone, so he ultimately went with destroy. Broshep Adept just wanted a galaxy where people could live in peace without fear of some alien gods, so he also went destroy. Femshep Sentinel started paragon, but had a mental break near the end of ME1 with that whole asteroid about to crash into a planet thing and went full Renegade after that and ultimately decided the only way to ensure the cycle would end would be to take control of it all herself and chose control. Femshep Soldier was tired and just wanted it all to end, so she chose Destroy. And Broshep Engineer never had a chance of truly saving the galaxy. All he wanted when he joined the alliance military was to hack the shit out of some cool alien tech, but he somehow got lucky and survived a mission so they pinned a medal on him and somehow annointed him the chosen one. He made literally all the wrong decisions, the campaign through all 3 games a cavalcade of fuck ups, distrust and death. He killed Wrex in game 1. Got everyone but himself, Joker, Mordin, and Morinth killed at the end of 2, and at the end of 3 he showed up at earth with so few assets the only choice he possibly had was destroy, and his choice nuked every civilized world back to the stone age. It was actually an interesting experience playing that last one. Usually when I play a game with moral choices I inevitably go as paragon as I can. So for that one I went "what's the worst possible choice I can make right here and now?" and did that. It actually ended up being the most entertaining playthrough of the six.

I deliberately killed people off as a way to make it realistic. It was a very dramatic playthrough lol. My default playthrough is mostly renegade but keeps his squad intact. Does the loyalty missions etc. I've only been full paragon once or twice. I prefer the dramatic playthroughs lol

I can only bring myself to choose my infiltrator Femshep, because I did everything I could to make this Sherpard's story incredibly deep and meaningful. My Sherpard (who, all her life, always witnessed everything in life, including farming, as a big business machine) at first joined the military for revenge and protection. But after Akuze, she went throught a philosophical stage, that made her re-think everything that happened in her life so far, trying to find a purpose to all of this suffering. The answer to her question came when she chose to become what she saw as the perfect predator in the N7 program. Thing is, she didn't want to simply destroy things in the name of her duty. She also wanted to create something and build upon what already existed, with the cards she was given. So she became incredibly manipulative, calculating and cold, but with enough humanity to build the proper resistance against the Reapers. However, that didn't stop her from manipulating the Council throught public pressure, sabotage the Genophage (even though she saved Maelon's data) in the hopes that after the war, a third solution for the Krogan problem was found, kill Samara, because she wanted to perform a psychological experiment on Morinth, etc, as she hoped to create her own vision of a superior civilization. In the ending, she knew she couldn't choose to destroy, because then all of her planning, scheming and sacrifice would be for nothing, as they were made taking into account a connected society filled with Reaper technology. Worse, she would still be alive to witness this new society (I tested that). But there was a way she could still win, even if she chose either Control or Synthesis. Javik's memory shard. If she understood correctly the proccess behind those two endings thanks to the time she spent around the Geth and the Asari, and if she learned the lesson of hope and faith in other people correctly, then she could have the shard be incorporated in the Reapers' infrastructure alongside her, which would eventually cause such a strong emotional response, that they would have no choice but to either become hesitant in hurting people, giving said people enough time to find a way to destroy them, or have them commit a massive suicide against each other. Which one she chose ? That really depends on how commited she is to see change, imposed or not. And how willing she is to take that risk with the shard. I'm still not sure which of those two endings should be the official one for her. Leave down in the comments.

I am alive. All of us, synthetic and organic, have been changed. The war is over, and the Reapers are helping to rebuild. Where once they threatened us with extinction... ...they now bring us the collective knowledge of the cultures that came before. As a galaxy, we can now live the lives we have wished for... ...taking our first steps into a new and wonderful future... ...where organics and synthetics can coexist peacefully. With peace across the galaxy and with unlimited access to knowledge... ...to recover the greatness that was lost... ...and surpass it. We will reclaim our worlds... and the stars. As the line between synthetic and organic disappears, we may transcend mortality itself... ...to reach a level of existence I cannot even imagine. And we will remember that this chance for a new life did not come without cost. No matter how far we advance, we will remember the sacrifices of those who made it possible. And we will remember Shepard. Because of him... I am alive, and I am not alone. - EDI, Synthesis ending

The indoctrination theory always made sense to me. The thing with the boy at the beginning of ME3 and the growling reaper sounds, It makes sense Shepard was succumbing to the indoctrination, and when the boy appears at the end, you can also here voiceovers of male and female Shepard in the child voice. I do feel Shepard maintained control over himself the whole time, but it felt like the reaper indoctrination was starting to get to him. I also believe everything that happened after he ran towards the beam in the end of ME3 happened in his head.

I first played the whole trilogy back in 2016, after KZread popped some videos in my home and made me very curious about this game. I loved it from the start and didn't have any problem with the ending, mostly because I played the extended one. I chose Destruction and Synthesis, playing both because I was curious about them. Both were good in their own ways, but I've always felt that this game always lacked a very specific thing to be perfect: the chance to choose Destruction AND save the synthetics. It could be handled both from a narrative (EDI manages to copy her personality in a super secret server, the geth develope a secret structure to house their codes, etc) and gameplay (do some specific things in all 3 games to achieve the result and get the maximum score) point of view. Of course it should be something very difficult to achieve, but I think it would add that layer that would make this game complete as it should have been from start.

I somewhat agree, but the older I have gotten, the more I like the endings of Mass Effect. The older I get, the more I appreciated art that mirror reality. Reality is seldom, if ever, perfect. Sweet choices are often spiced with bitterness. I find it appropriate that Mass Effect, that was almost like a second life, also have no perfect endings. You always have to sacrifice SOMETHING. Life is your choice of what it is.

@@tzimiable true, but since life has many possibilities, a game that pretends to mirror it should have at least the small chance to make everything go "right". If, on the other hand, we say that a game cannot mimic life perfectly, that "it's just a game" or "I just want to enjoy some quality time, without thinking too much about real life", then we have even a better reason to provide such an ending.

I love the dream-like feeling of this entire sequence, which is why I can't hate the ending. I rather like it, even if it maybe is silly (haven't made up my mind) that you get to decide the fate of our galaxy in that one single moment.

I've always said that. People just liked to jump on the hate bandwagon back then, as those sorts of people still do and always will. It's by no means a flawless ending, it's not the best I've ever seen, but it's DAMN well not nearly as bad as some people were screaming it was. Apart from most people already knowing how it ends, that was the other major reason the remasters didn't reginite the "controversy", because increasing amounts of people have reevaluated their hasty opinions and recognised a lot of the ME hate in 2012 was bandwagoning. Not nearly as many as should have, mind you, but still. They probably just wanted a happy ever after ending where everyone is fine anyway, including Shepard. That would be have been much more insulting. My Shepard was, is, and always will be willing to lay down her life to protect the galaxy. That was always her destiny and I've never been upset about that part

@@TheLastCrusader22 Agree, and I think with how things are now in the world and with game design being a lot more diverse than it was back then, people now would get it a lot more than they did back then. It was just too far ahead of its time, maybe.

@@TheLastCrusader22 Yeah. The ending is good in the extended cut. It's just that ME has one of the most diverse and opposite fanbases I've ever encountered in gaming. It's probably because of the game's impressive content and codex. It's the case of "you can't satisfy everyone".

It's the only real way they can go if they intend to at all continue, even vaguely, the storyline from the original trilogy. Of course, I don't think they will do that, since that would permanently ruin replays of the OG trilogy, but they might just be that stupid, you never know. In the teaser, Liara was alive and looked normal, so that at least rules out synthesis, which a lot of people like to claim as the "best" ending (it's not, btw). At the end of the day, I don't think people should expect the new ME (if it's even released) to have more than loose connections at best to the OG trilogy

@@TheLastCrusader22 Well said. I agree that if EA/BioWare commit to one ending, then it sort screws the ME3 experience even more. So maybe loose connections are all we get. Because it's not just whether Shepherd survived but whether the mass relays are intact, the reapers are controlled/destroyed, and so on. Then there are all the story choices - did the Geth and Quarians make peace? Did one finally win on Rannok? Did the Krogan Genohpage get cured? Did the Salarians join the allied fleet at Earth? :)
