Far beneath the majesty and splendour of the Paris Opera House, hides the Phantom in a shadowy existence. Shamed by his physical appearance and feared by all, the love he holds for his beautiful protégée Christine Daaé is so strong that even her heart cannot resist.
The musical opened at Her Majesty’s Theatre on 9 October 1986 with Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman in the leading roles, and there have been dozens of productions worldwide since then. Now in its 35th record-breaking year, The Phantom of the Opera continues to captivate audiences at Her Majesty’s Theatre in London’s West End, after more than 11,000 performances.

"I hope no one notices this gorgeous engagement ring I've stealthily hidden right around my neck."
I want a party like this....
I love this song so much, and especially when Madame Giry says "And what a Masquerade!" She has a beautiful voice and I wish she had a longer song than that and "Keep your hand at the level of your eyes"
"it's a secret engagement, Raoul...so lets sing loudly next to people and no one will know!"
I love this song. It's my favourite scene/song from the whole musical/film. The choreographers are just amazing. The costumes are beautiful and the dancers are so precise!! This is why I love this scene so much!! :D
Batman at the right hand side at 1:42
Anyone else notice how everyone is wearing black white or gold and then Christine shows up in pink! Hahaha
i wish my school could do a masquerade like this!
We should get 6000 pple to walk down in the Macy's parade yelling, "MASQUERADE!"
yeah....what a pity the phantom cant be here...........
I like this version of Masquerade better than the play, the costumes here are just elegant and eye-friendly because everything blends.
The chandelier crash is moved to create a difference between opera production and movie production and probably for dramatic effect when - SPOILERS - the theatre is burned down because of the candlelit chandelier. The phantom also kills in that scene so it makes him appear more menacing and fearsome. They also cut the line "remember there are worse things than a shattered chandelier" from Phantom's speech. Personally, I like the difference so that we can appreciate both interpretations :)
lol, in the movie version of my piano book, it says that Raoul and Christine sing the part "but who can name the face?" at 1:26 cuz they totally look like Raoul and Christine, lol
Yup, they did say that. Threw me right off too...'cause I was totally singing along in glee. ;) There's always small (and sometimes HUGE) differences between the stage and film versions of musicals. Sometimes entire songs are left out of the movies!
That is what they say in the stage version. The movie was changed in a few ways with help and permission from Mr. Webber :)
'It's an engagement, not a crime.' Except...
Love this movie
I would totally come to that, and i would sing my heart out xD
watching movie in class and love it
oh wonderful , how proud, you must be of her.. Bravo..!!!
@jgoodrich46 I've always thought that the elegant-yet-colorless clothing that the wealthy patrons in this scene wore was meant to represent that while on the outside they appear sophisticated and cultured, emotionally they are actually dull and lack individuality.
oooh raol and Christine are rebels XD no masks for them!
Oh god, reminds me of rapture in bioshock, with all the masks and new year celebration.
why do you laugh at such a beautiful opera, such beautiful moments, of love and singing and encouraging of love , pure love...there is no LOL. in this.. piece..
1:55 What the heck is Batman doing in France?
FIRST! amazing movie luv it!
1:55 It's Wesley, from Princess Bride!
is it just me, or in the musical don't they say 'to a new chandelier' instead of 'to our friends who are here'? because in the one i saw (live), the chandelier has already fallen.
This need 100000000000 views
why is everyone dressed in either gold, black, or white (or a combination)?
1:19 Hey V!! This is the Phantom's movie, don't ya know!?!?
here's to hoping you aren't being derogatory!
I prefer the stage production over this, the colorful costumes made it seem much more festive, the dancing in this seems too modern for the time period.
Robot-dance at 1:37!!!
meg looks so pretty!
i see the michelin man's brother!
i love how this is supposed to be the most colourful songs in the show, and yet the colour scheme is white and black... hmmm.
hehehehe
i wuld love 2 rent out the paris oprea house ndrow amascarde ball just like this....ah a guy could dream
Which one is the vogue guy?
Why do you see any vampires or werewolves in the movie?
Is it just me, or does Face of Beast look like V? XD I love this version the best! :3
hahahha!! good one! XD
yeah thats correct, in the movie it drops after point of no return so they had to make a lyric change
i didn't know batman liked operas
the irony.. haha. i luv this one tho'
Poto and Twilight are NOTHING alike.
They changed it for the movie, to make it a bit different for those watching. ^-^'
My little A-cups hurt for Carlotta's in that dress!! :( OUCH!!
Actually Rauol it is a crime that you two are engaged
batman was there xD 2:30 kinda looks like him xD
1:55 look its Batman!
Seriously, this is the best operatic joke i've ever heard.
You are right. They changed the one in the movie to where the chandelier falls at the end.
1:20 CATS.
yes! in the movie version they drop the chandelier later on in act 2, rather than at the end of act 1. silly. lol
ikr
I believe it says both.
Awww... it was cut short. :(
Vogue
mesa thinks it is flutterwacken
Offense taken! How in the world is Phantom Of The Opera like Twilight?! At least Phantom Of The Opera took thought and had an ACTUAL story line! Twilight is probably the simplest crap ever, a 4 year old could have written it! Also, who the heck are you comparing such a beautiful, compassionate story to a pile of crap like Twilight?! You should be stoned for even thinking of this! You sir, just added to my list of people I hate, right above "Bronies"!
Yep, that happened when I saw it. Actually, when it fell, I was like "Well that was stupid" I think the film had it fall at a better point.
ten y watch it
being with andre firrman carlota piongi madem iry nd meg going down the stair =the populr kidz
LOL or more like Madonna's Vogue!
I mean Face of Clown >.
the conductor takes his job to seriously
1:13 Lady Gaga!!
why?
emmy was a tragic waste. I heard more emotion in Kristen stewarts voice then emmy when she wasn't singing -.-'
No offense to anyone. I love phantom of the opera. But i realized this, the phantom of the opera is a very early and old version of twilight. But with better acting :)
